Diwali dhamaka

It is historically proven to be Bollywood’s most profitable period, but this Diwali is the industry’s most important yet. A glut of new films are due as tinseltown looks to recover from a hugely disappointing 2009. The multiplex v/s distributors stand-off, swine flu fears that forced some theatres to close, and a series of expensive flops have got everyone looking forward to the next few months.
“About Rs 700 crore are at stake in the last quarter, for Bollywood as there are nearly two dozen films releasing by December,” said trade analyst Komal Nahta, predicting “good times” for the industry over the next three months.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh said, “The first half of the year has been disastrous. But things seem promising now. Wanted has already done well and hopes are up for every subsequent release — What’s Your Raashee?, Do Knot Disturb, Main Aur Mrs Khanna, Wake Up Sid, Blue, All The Best — all the way to December with films like Paa and 3 Idiots. It’s a choc-a-bloc, golden period for the industry.”
Karan Johar’s Wake Up Sid kicks off the battle of the blockbusters on October 2, hoping to steal a march on three films that are out on Diwali weekend. Ajay Devgan’s All The Best, the mega-budget underwater odyssey Blue, and the Salman-Kareena starrer Main Aur Mrs Khanna are all slated to release on October 16.
Prem Soni, the director of Main Aur Mrs Khanna, said he was unconcerned about going head-to-head with the other two films. “All the films releasing on Diwali have a different kind of subject. A good film works irrespective of when it is released,” he said.
The following week sees the release of another Salman film, London Dreams, as well as the SFX-laden Amitabh Bachchan starrer Aladin.
Thereafter it’s another Big B film Paa that battles it out with the Kareena-Saif starrer Kurbaan, Madhur Bhandarkar’s Jail and Tum Mile, based on the 2005 Mumbai floods. Aamir Khan rounds off the year with 3 Idiots on Christmas, hoping to recreate the mega success of his last film Ghajini, which released on the same date last year.
