So, you have been a fashionista all your life! You love to trot around in heels, flaunt a narrow waistline with a cinched belt and top it off with a super sexy pair of skinny jeans!
Ahh, the must-haves for the chic look this season, or perhaps the recipe for killer fashion.
Kill who? Vertiginous heels, tight jeans and tighter belts will definitely affect your health. And you thought we were talking about killer looks, huh!
Consider these health risks of the style essentials that are oh-so-trendy at the moment…
Mighty tights
The trend of super skinnies and tights refuse to say goodbye. So, Miss Trendista has been wearing them every single day for almost two years now. She looks great, but one fine day she complained of this numb, burning sensation in her thigh, and she could not even stand!
What happened? iDiva's health expert Dr Sindhu Nair explains, "Her condition is related to nerves and is called Meralgia Paresthetica or 'tingling thigh syndrome'. This happens when a nerve that runs from the pelvis to your thigh is unnaturally compressed."
Besides medicines, the only cure is to avoid constrictive clothing. So, why not buy a few skirts, dresses, flouncy pyjamas, dhoti pants and high-waist trousers that will not strangulate that poor nerve!
Killer heels
Fashion victims can't live without ultra high heels and their feet literally die in them! You can't possibly overlook the long scroll of health risks caused by sky high heels.
Here's Dr. Nair's list - Damage to the tendons in the heel, blisters, bunions, corns and calluses - some of which can even require surgery. Plus, hammertoes, ingrown toenails, heel pain and bumps and joint pains look ugly. Research shows that wearing high heeled shoes regularly causes long-term health problems such as a distortion of the lower spine, arthritis in the knees and even abortions.
Phew, are you already rushing off to dump those heels! Halt and consider these alternatives - wear heels with ankle straps that give good support and your heels should fit you well and not cause any discomfort. Dr Nair suggests that you switch to flats during the day to give your calf muscles a break.
Boo boos to belts
The hour-glass silhouette is so hot right now that every stylista is wearing her waist belt just a little bit tighter. But are these women blowing the wind out of their lungs???
Dr Nair raises her concerns, "You are restricting movement and breathing and causing a bad posture that can misalign you spine. Tight-fitting clothing hampers your digestive system, leading to stomach cramps and bowel problems. Many researchers believe tight-fitting clothes may be linked to endometriosis, cystitis and even stomach cancer."
So, lady if you are dying for that itsy-bitsy waist, why don't you work out?? You'll get fitter, sexier and your health won't go for a toss!
Bone and joint specialist Dr. Rakshit from Delhi has some good news, "If a women knows how to balance herself while walking around in heel, her posture will not be affected."
The golden rule to remain stylish and (not-to-forget) healthy is - if it is not comfortable and sooo tight that the seams are bursting open, dump it!
