SSC students of city-based government schools have asked the state government to allot seats in the three IIITs at Idupulapaya, Nuzividu and Basar. Of the 6,000 seats in the IIITs, not a single seat has been allotted to the city despite other districts getting their quota.
About 150 students from the city scored over 500 out of 600 marks in the SSC exams this year which was on a par with the reputed corporate colleges. Officials of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies, which runs the three IIITs, said Hyderabad was eliminated as it is a “urban district.”
But students of government schools in the city argued that they too come from families with poor economic background and thus deserve seats in the IIITs. Teacher unions in the city are strongly against RGUKT’s decision to exempt Hyderabad district from the IIITs. They have decided to launch an agitation in front of the collectorate and the office of the RGUKT from Monday.
