If thinking of your in-laws (current or future) scares you, welcome to the club! By now, TV serials have ingrained in your mind the idea that your happily ever after is marred by your interfering mother-in-law.
And now there's a study by the Malaysian National Population and Study Development Board that says interference by the mother-in-law is a top reason for divorce. The study was carried out on the local Indian population.
But don't fret, you can save yourself a lot of marital aggravation with these tips.
Do it with love
It always works. Showering extra love, affection and care will earn you a top spot in her good books. Leave for work only after touching her feet; buy her her favourite food on the way home. Make small talk with her friends over the phone. Give her reasons to boast about her perfect bahu in front of her Laughter Club friends.
Get anther TV
Yes, get another one, just for her. It's better than sulking over the fact that you don't get the remote. So, if you don't appreciate her saas-bahu sagas, both of you can watch what you'll want, when you'll want. Peace, mom!
Tit for tat
She has a knack for popping into your room when things are just heating up between you and the husband. She wants to know all about her laadla's day at work and other such stuff! So we suggest a game of tit for tat. Be extra nice to your pa-in-law. Say something light-heartedly funny about Mom on her when you see her coming towards you. We bet your father-in-law will enjoy that.
Plan her vacation
If she's religious, why don't you suggest that she take a trip to, say Rishikesh. For one, she'll love you for sending her on an all expense paid trip, and two, it'll put some distance between you two. And we all know about distance making the heart fonder and all that. It's brownie points for you!
The best cook
Most mothers-in-law have a knack for being good cooks. Praise her cooking skills, make her feel like she deserves to win a Michellin Star (it's THE top restaurant/good food award in the world) and that you'd rather eat her food than go to the Taj. More brownie points for you!
Cherish it
This is a sweet-n-sour relationship. So just go with the flow and take the good with the bad. Try to enjoy it like the women from the serial Tu Tu Main Main.
