Don’t be caught fugly!

In the picture-perfect, flawlessly-airbrushed lives of celebrities, come a few moments where they end up becoming disasters — of the fashion kind. Fast being termed worldwide as the “fugly” (fantastically ugly) phenomenon, everything from red carpet bloopers to fashion faux pas are being captured and chronicled through popular “fashion policing” sites like Fug Yourself, Bollywood Fashion Police, High Heels Confidential et al.
thanks to this rage, youngsters in the city get to catch these “fugly moments” as they happen, on sites where “fashion dos and don’ts” are delivered daily to their desktops with a touch of sarcasm and spite.
“It’s nice to revel in the fact that stars can go terribly wrong too,” exclaims Shruti Langadapally, a student of Loyola College who is “addicted” to these sites. “It’s great to know that celebs too have their bad hair and bleeding make-up days. Yes, most of the time, everything they wear is scrutinised a little too much in a mean manner, but it is fun. When they are in the public eye always, being critical of them becomes inevitable,” she justifies.
In fact, these bloggers spare no event, be it a premiere, a store launch or a red carpet affair. They report every fashion disaster. Among popular international celebrities frequently featured on these sites are stars like Lindsay Lohan, Mischa Barton, Paris Hilton among others. Not surprisingly, desi stars like Vidya Balan and Neha Dhupia with a questionable fashion sense too are written about.
“It’s sad that these stars who have so much money often don’t know how to spend it,” exclaims Madhuri Reddy, a student of fashion designing at Hamstech. “They turn up at events wearing outrageous creations when you feel like they should know better,” she says.
What’s more, keeping a watch on the fashion bloopers of celebs is the best way to ensure you don’t make the same mistakes. “I know I won’t make the fashion faux pas that one of them made after watching how fugly it looks sometimes,” adds Madhuri.
For most others, these sites make for a great read that can liven up your most “boring day”. Ria De, a student says, “Watching celebrities who are known to be fashion icons commit fashion sins makes is fun, they seem more real. I enjoy the scathing, tongue-in-cheek commentary too.”
