Tata will be sole supplier of Sikorsky S-92 helicopter cabins

Tata Advanced Systems Ltd, which concluded its agreement to manufacture helicopter cabins (aeroframes), for the 19-seater Sikorsky S-92 helicopter from its greenfield facility in Hyderabad, is all set to add another dimension to city as a global hub for aerospace manufacturing.

TASL, the wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Sons and a lead company for providing integrated solutions for aerospace, defence, homeland security and disaster management would become the sole supplier of helicopter cabins to Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation to meet its global demand for S-92 helicopters.

Disclosing this in a telephone interview to The Hindu from New Delhi, A. J. S Walia, Managing Director, India and South Asia, SikorskyAircraft Corporation, said on Saturday that the company which had tie-ups in Japan and other countries for S-92 aeroframes would wind them up gradually once the Tata’s Hyderabad facility was fully stabilised.

“Every aspect has been firmed up and TASL is firm in its commitment to deliver the first helicopter cabin by November, 2010. TASL is well aware of the order book commitments of Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. for next 28 months. We are confident that the first aeroframe will roll out as per schedule given the commitment and competence of the Tata Group,” he said.

The TASL is expected to earn a revenue of $ 350 million from Sikorsky Corp by delivering its orders. The company is expected to deliver three helicopter cabins in 2010 itself.

Once the plant was fully ready, it could deliver over 40 aeroframes a year.

In the initial stages, Sikorsky will help in training personnel, guide the processes and other supervision. Hundreds of jobs would be created in the facility in addition to the indirect employment in the ancillary units, Mr. Walia added.
