Many educationists want the Intermediate public exams, slated to begin on March 3, to be postponed after the government declared a two-week holiday for junior colleges and universities in the Telangana region.
Not even half of the syllabus has been covered yet in 900 government junior colleges.
However, the Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) is averse to postponing the exams as it will affect the schedule of other exams including the Eamcet.
“A major portion of the syllabus in government junior colleges is yet to be completed. We are looking at all options before taking a final decision on postponing the exams,” said a senior official of BIE.
“If the Inter exams are postponed, it will lead to a delay in the announcement of results. This will impact the conduct of advanced supplementary exams. With the 25 per cent weightage of Intermediate marks in Eamcet being in force, it will impact the conduct of Eamcet as well. All this will hamper the admissions process for higher education courses and affect the academic year,” he added.
The decision has upset the academic calendar of many universities too. Semester examinations have been postponed twice this week.
With the 15-day christmas vacation beginning soon after, the varsities said this will affect the timing of final examinations.
JNTU-Hyderabad officials said they will have to reschedule the academic calendar to ensure the that this loss doesn’t affect the final examinations.
The government lecturers have termed the decision to declare holidays in junior colleges as ‘hasty’, saying that there is no justification in announcing holidays for junior colleges on the pretext of a “volatile situation” in universities.
The lecturers are worried about the ‘practical exams’ that would begin from February 3.
Many colleges lack laboratories and the officials were arranging for temporary laboratories and conducting practicals. These holidays have come as a setback for them.
