Rahul's phone stolen at IGI, thief handed over to SPG

The thief who stole this mobile phone didn't realize what he had let himself in for. Because the owner of the phone was none other than Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi. Not surprisingly, the thief was soon tracked down and the handset restored to its owner after the official machinery swung into top gear.

The incident occurred last week, when Gandhi arrived in New Delhi from London on a Virgin Atlantic flight. He had flown to Europe a fortnight ago for quiet celebrations of his 40th birthday. After returning home, Gandhi discovered that his handset was missing from his check-in bag and informed Special Protection Group (SPG) officials.

The CISF, which is responsible for airport security, promptly got cracking. CCTV footage was examined and investigators zeroed in on one of the four employees of the ground-handling agency who had unloaded the bag at IGI Airport. The thief was apparently handed over to the SPG, while the phone was recovered from his house on Sunday.

The SPG is learnt to have questioned the thief at length. However, details about his whereabouts were not revealed. Delhi Police, which usually receives complaints regarding such incidents and registers cases, was kept out. DCP (IGI) O P Mishra said: "We have not received any information and no case has been registered."

The ground handling for Virgin is done by Khambatta Aviation. Despite repeated attempts, CISF officials were not available for comment.

Incidentally, Rahul Gandhi's birthday trip was a rather eventful one. On his way out a fortnight back, the Virgin Atlantic lane in which he was traveling kept shuttling between one runway and another at IGI before finally taking off, after a delay of almost 40 minutes.
