A point to ponder: annual requirement of donated blood in the State stands at six lakh to eight lakh units. Even if one per cent presumed to constitute all groups, makes it a point to donate a unit of blood once every year, many a death can be avoided.
Yogesh Raj Srivastava does it four times every year, and does it whenever there is an urgent need. “I was initiated 25 years ago, when I was in my under-graduation. It was October 2, and a camp was organised on our campus at V.V.College. After donating blood, I felt rejuvenated. The doctor at the camp told me I saved a life, which appealed to my sense of self-worth. Since then, I have been donating blood,” Mr. Srivastava narrates. So far, he donated 91 times, sometimes during emergencies.
As an executive member of Red Cross Society, he is also active in organising blood for the needy. He has a list of 7,200 donors, and so far helped over 7,000 patients. He saved over 20 lives after Mecca Masjid blasts, by mobilising donors. For his role in helping the injured, he received Godfrey Philips Bravery Award in 2008.
