JNTU: Make seniors protectors of juniors

The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) has come up with a new idea to prevent ragging on campus — make senior students “protectors” of juniors.
Under this scheme, each fresher will be assigned to the care of a senior student who has to look after the junior student’s welfare.

“The senior can protect the junior in case of ragging,” said Dr E. Saibaba Reddy, the registrar of JNTU. “We will work out this method in hostels too. We are also planning to conduct counselling sessions for the parents of seniors to monitor the behaviour of their children.” This is part of the JNTU venture to come up with new policies and measures to battle the menace of ragging. It is planning to review its current rules, regulations and existing anti-ragging measures for this.
The university says it is looking at ragging as a “psychological” problem and is going to ask colleges to involve senior students too in the induction programme held in the beginning of the academic year.

“Our attitude is not policing,” said the registrar. “We will come up with remedies to all the psychological issues involved. If seniors are made in-charge of juniors, they will become their protectors. We are not sure if this method helps in eradicating ragging completely, but we hope it will help.”
“We have a set of rules and regulations in place to counter ragging in professional colleges,” he added. “We will certainly review it before the classes begin for the first year students next month.”
Further, the university will also come up with a detailed plan on how to handle ragging at bus stops, hostels and private buses.

Authorities of the JNTU College of Engineering said that the University will remove the students from the placement list if they have any allegations of ragging pending against them.
