Breaking away from a 117-year old norm, University of Chicago now has a policy in place that will allow men and women to be roommates in its dormitories.
Male and female undergraduates will be allowed to have "room together" with "no questions asked", something that was forbidden throughout the 117-year history of the University, seen by many as an attempt by the institution to preserve its conservative image.
While the policy is not aimed at romantic relationships, boyfriends and girlfriends are not prohibited from living together because the University of Chicago will not ask why students want to be roommates, the Chicago SunTimes reported.
The change in policy had been debated for the last couple of years after advocates for transgender students pushed the university to allow "gender neutral" housing.
After a series of public forums and campus study, the programme was piloted last semester with 10 students.
Although a handful of alumni and others complained when the school was formulating the policy, since it has been in effect there has been "no complaints, no issues, no concerns", University of Chicago's director of undergraduate student housing Katie Callow-Wright was quoted as saying in the report.
