9 JNU students rusticated for 2 years for ragging

Nine students of Jawaharlal Nehru University found involved in ragging were rusticated on Wednesday for a period of two years after the proctorial committee which probed the incidents submitted its report to the Vice-Chancellor.

"Nine students have been rusticated for a period of four semesters and they have been declared out of bounds from University campus with immediate effect," a University spokesperson said.

Besides, 10 other students, who were found to be present as "silent spectators" when ragging was taking place were expelled from the hostel for a period of one year.

The probe conducted by the proctorial committee was triggered by a case of ragging reported in the campus.

The Chief Proctor's Office was instructed to conduct a thorough inquiry after a fresher reported an incident of ragging last week, in perhaps the first ever such case in the history of the institution.

Four students of Master of Computer Applications were expelled on August 13 from a hostel after the allegations emerged and the anti-ragging committee got into action.

An FIR was also lodged against the four students.

While residential facilities of the students were withdrawn with immediate effect, they were allowed to attend classes pending the proctorial inquiry.
