Appointment nod for 2,550 lecturers

The Karnataka Administrative Tribunal (KAT) on Wednesday upheld the final selection list of candidates for the post of lecturers in
first-grade colleges prepared by the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC).

The KAT bench headed by chairman Justice A V Srinivasa Reddy dismissed the batch of petitions filed by Ravindranath and others and upheld KPSC's notification dated December 24, 2007.

The KAT observed that whether degrees given by distance education universities
are valid or not don't come under the tribunal's judicial review. The UGC has the authority to verify the genuineness of a degree given by the distance education council.

In June, KAT stayed KPSC's final selection list of 2,550 lecturers. The list was issued on February 19 and 27.

The applicants challenged the validity of educational qualifications of the selected candidates. Most of them passed M Phil through Alagappa Univerisity, Periyar University and Vinayaka Mission University __ all in Tamil Nadu.

Alagappa and Periyar universities don't have approval of the distance education council and UGC.
