Five persons were electrocuted and 20 were severely injured as they waited to purchase tickets for the Telugu film Magadheera on Sunday. The incident occurred when an electric cable snapped and fell on the crowd at Lakshmi theatre in Salur Mandal here on Sunday. All the five died on the spot.
The mishap comes close on the heels of the incident where two persons were electrocuted due to a short circuit at Bhavani theatre at Kazipet on Thursday night which also left 15 injured. Of the 20 injured, the condition of one, Vaddadi Jagadeeswara Rao, 20, of Relli Street who is undergoing treatment in a private hospital, is said to be critical.
Five others were in the CHC while others were discharged as out-patients. The theatre is owned by a Congress leader, Mr P. Nageswara Rao, who was not available for comment. “We immediately closed the screening of the movie. We will take action against the owner after an inquiry,” the SP, Mr Y. Gangadhar, said.
Police and revenue officials stopped screening of Magadheera at the theatre. Mr Gangadhar told this correspondent that the mishap occurred when somebody in the surging crowd accidentally pulled a wire dangling low. It was not clear why the wire was at arm’s reach.
The dead have been identified as Pothanapalli Appanna, 20, of Maripalli, Pilli Lingaraju, 18, of Medara street, Kadapu Latchayya, 24, of Bobbilivalasa, Dukka Ramesh, 25, of Bangarampet and Reddy Durga, 26, of Dasari street.
