M.Tech admissions in a mess

Uncertainty looms large over the M.Tech admissions in the state due to the change in admission procedures. Initially, the officials decided to conduct centralised counselling for M.Tech admissions. Later, they opted for decentralised counselling, with each university conducting admissions separately. According to officials, priority will be given to students who have qualified in GATE followed by the students who cleared PGCET, the state-level exam.

While about 30,000 students appeared for the PGCET exam, there are around 11,000 seats in M. Tech and 2,000 seats in M. Pharmacy in the state.
“The decentralised counselling is troublesome for students. We need to apply to every university separately. We will incur additional expenditure towards application fee, travel and boarding to attend counselling separately in each university,” said Mr P. Raghu Ram, a GATE-qualified student.
Some universities have already issued notifications and have begun admissions adding to the confusion among students. The notification issued by the Sri Venkateshwara University did not clarify if the admission will be conducted at university-level or the regional-level.
However, the officials said they were forced to go for decentralised counselling as the existing counselling centres are busy conducting Eamcet, Icet and B.Pharmacy admissions. “It’s difficult to get counselling centres to conduct admissions in centralised mode for M.Tech at this juncture. We are conducting B.Ed admissions at university centres due to non-availability of counselling centres,” said the chairman of AP State Council of Higher Education, Prof K.C.Reddy.
He said three major universities have been asked to conduct admissions at regional-level. So, all colleges under Rayalseema region will be covered by Sri Venkateshwara University, the Andhra region by Andhra University and Telangana region by Osmania University.
