All-girl gangs go globetrotting

After the single woman traveller, it’s the all girls’ holiday gang that is hot on the trend-o-meter. From ‘singelles’ and smug marrieds to empty-nesters, ladies in the city are flocking to exotic locales with birds of the same feather, leaving familial baggage behind. It’s bye-bye kitty party, hello adventure and excitement for team x-chromosome.
On the road with a group of like-minded travellers not only offers the safety and economy of numbers but can also be more fun. Bani, an interior designer, who recently returned from a holiday in China with a group of women says, “We shop, go sightseeing, pamper ourselves and do all sorts of girl stuff that we don’t get to do on family trips. I have even seen women over 60 enjoy themselves like they are fresh out of college.”
Gangs of girls taking working holidays are also on the rise. “This is a trend that is catching up,” says Vani Subhash, who runs a travel agency that offers customised packages for female travellers. “Many women travel in groups even during work trips abroad and indulge in lots of fun together.”
The city’s ladies’ clubs will not be left behind too. Ajitha Reddy, vice-chairperson of the Ficci Ladies Organisation says, “My trip to Turkey with members of my organisation was great fun! I also made great friends. Usually, on family trips, women make their own needs secondary. But this trip was so much fun, that we went on another trip later.”
What these women seem to love the most though, is that with no boys around, vacations are a guilt-free indulgence. Ayesha K., a freelance graphic designer says, “Men are just not fun to travel with. They refuse to ask for directions and don’t let you splurge. When it’s all women groups travelling, it’s a party all the way with all of us indulging ourselves like never before. I’ve been to Barcelona, the US and Australia with all-girl gangs and I want to now head to South Africa!”
We’d say, “You go girl!” and mean it literally this time.
