DGP offers prasadam to Home Minister, KVP

Director General of Police S.S.P. Yadav, who is in the eye of a storm after YSR’s death, offered Tirupati prasadam to Home Minister P. Sabitha Indira Reddy and Advisor to Government on security affairs K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao here on Saturday.
Mr. Yadav’s social visits to the residences of these leaders raised eyebrows since he has attracted flak from both Congress and Opposition leaders who criticised the Police Department for absolving itself of responsibility of Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s security once his helicopter had taken off. The mishandling of the situation by police at YSR’s funeral in Idupalapaya also caused considerable anger among Ministers who could not attend the ceremony.
The DGP met Ms. Reddy a day after the government reportedly decided to promote the Anti-Corruption Bureau chief R.R. Girish Kumar to the rank of Director General of Police. But, the ACB chief said he had not received the orders till Saturday.
The move to promote Mr. Girish Kumar to the rank of DGP is seen as a strong indication that he could replace Mr. Yadav. He will become the fifth officer in that rank after Mr. Yadav, A.K. Mohanty, P. Gautam Kumar and K.R. Nandan. A thumb rule followed in the appointment of DGPs is that an officer should have completed 30 years of service. By this norm and some other technicalities, Mr. Girish Kumar became eligible for promotion in January 2008.
Incidentally, Mr. Yadav was shifted as the DGP at the instance of the Election Commission of India in March 2009, the day he landed here from Tirupati. He had visited the shrine on his return from a foreign tour.
