Students’ protest rocks Jnanabharathi

The deplorable condition of the girls’ hostel galvanized the postgraduate students of Bangalore University to stage a demonstration at Jnanabharathi campus on the outskirts of the city on Tuesday, leading to disruption of classes.

The students’ complaints ranged from lack of drinking water supply, supply of poor quality food, unclean environs and unhygienic toilets to the presence of rats and dogs in the girls hostel premises, which is home to an estimated 350 inmates. The students nursed a grouse against the university authorities for denying the inmates sports equipment and television.

With their repeated requests on improving the living conditions in the hostel on the campus falling on deaf ears, the students, led by various organizations began their protest by staging a road blockade at the entrance of the campus on Tuesday.

The protest took a turn for the worse when the police tried to arrest leaders of students.
