Ditch your shaving kit and flaunt those follicles this November because it’s time to grow a moustache for charity. Cheekily tagged, ‘Movember’, it’s the month where men use their facial hair to spread awareness about men’s health. So bid bye-bye to boring auctions, rallies and white-tie dinners and say hello to goatees, beards and mutton-chop whiskers.
Young corporates aren’t splitting hairs about raising awareness about men’s health — they’re enjoying growing a ’tache to generate initial curiosity. Anupam Nagar, a team leader at an IT company says, “I first came across the concept of Movember when I was working in Australia. It’s such an easy way to create awareness that it caught my attention. I’ve been doing it ever since. All one needs to do is sport a moustache for a month to show their support for creating awareness about men’s health.”
It’s simple and fun, admit these enthusiastic gentlemen. “I’ve been sporting a moustache for the last 18 years, but on November 1 I shaved it off. I had a tough time convincing my wife to bear with my clean shaven look,” laughs Arun Kandoth, an employee with Microsoft.
The Movember movement first took root in Australia to help spread awareness about issues like prostate cancer and depression. Countries like the US, UK, Canada, New Zealand and Ireland are also a part of this unique initiative.
Though India has not yet formally signed up for Movember, “We just participate by growing a moustache. This obviously creates a lot of curiosity in people, and we can then explain the motive behind this,” explains Aloysius Mahesh, a software developer, who is growing a goatee to show his support for his brothers-in-moustaches, the ‘Mobros’.
And the women aren’t complaining. With dishy dudes like Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan sporting facial hair, these “Mo Sistas” are only glad to sign up.
Those interested in taking their hair-scapades to a higher level need only get in touch with a Mobro in a member country. Vivek Agarwal, a Google employee says, “I don’t qualify for Movember as I came to know about it when it was too late to register. I’m growing my facial hair nonetheless. It is a great cause to endorse on an international forum and I hope to donate to the official community at the end of the month”
Here’s a‘hairy-tale’ with a happy ending.
