A bumpy ride ahead

Chota-mota accidents are now as common in Hyderabad as biryani. And if your car has ever escaped unscathed from Hyderabad’s notorious traffic snarls, here’s some news that will make your victory sweeter. Every single day 350 to 400 damaged vehicles land up at service centres in the city. Mechanics and insurance companies, who are all too familiar with dented bumpers and scratched wheel caps, claim these are the most vulnerable parts of a Hyderabadi’s car. Over 200 cars with damaged wheel caps and broken bumpers are repaired everyday.
Agrees Ramana A., assistant works manager, Varun Service Centre, Begumpet, “Of the 400-odd damaged vehicles that need repair, 50 per cent need a bumper replacement or wheel cap repair.” Insurance folks either exclude these parts from their insurance coverage plans or reimburse only half the amount.
Girish B.H., state head (claims), ICICI Lombard, says, “Based on the analysis of the number of accident cases in the last seven years, 30 to 35 per cent of cars with frontal damage have dented bumpers while 50 per cent of rear damaged cars have disfigured bumpers.”
In fact, there is a running joke among youngsters that one has learnt to drive only once their car has been dented. Ketan Agarwal, software engineer, Infosys Technologies, says, “Even if one is a careful driver, his or her car is bound to be hit by other vehicles in Hyderabadi traffic. In fact, the extent of damage is proof of how long you’ve cruised the city roads. The biggest reason for road rage here are arguments about who is going to pay for the bumper damage.”
Mechanics in the city couldn’t agree more. Yusuf, a mechanic who runs a garage near Chacha Nehru Park, Masab Tank, says, “Every car that comes to requires bumper repairs. In fact, my customers say they spend most of their money only on repairing these damaged parts every month.
