Jyoti Basu was critically ill. On Saturday evening, Siddhartha Shankar Ray, Prakash and Brinda Karat, Somnath Chatterjee and Amitabh Bachchan shared moments at room 827 of AMRI Hospitals, Salt Lake, where Basu lay in an extremely critical state after multi-organ failure set in.
Basu’s vital organs — brain, kidney, liver, lungs and heart — had started sinking on Friday night itself though the dialysis had gone well. But the drop in the vital parameters forced the medical board to do a rethink. From 12.45 pm, Basu was put on slow, low efficiency daily dialysis (SLEDD), an eight-hour process, which couldn’t be completed and was stopped 20 minutes before the end.
