Ye shaam mastani, madhosh kiye jaye …the lilting voice of Kishore Kumar is all over the sprawling ground.
Nibbling popcorn, a young couple enjoys the melody as they stroll along. Yonder an elderly woman has a tough time keeping in sight her grandkids running here and there. Suddenly, the song stops and an announcement blares “ teen gumshuda ladke yehan radio station par hai .. jis kisi ke hai aakar lejayen ” (there are three boys at the radio station who have lost their way, whoever they belong to, please come over and take them).
Enduring appeal
Yes, it is ‘Numaish’ time and the ‘shop-till-you-drop’ syndrome has seized the city’s denizens yet again.
Seventy years and still going strong. That’s the enduring appeal of Hyderabad’s All India Industrial Exhibition. The mushroom growth of malls, multiplexes and the round-the-year exhibitions have not robbed the Numaish of its charm. People continue to flock it.
In fact the annual shopping bonanza is a keenly looked forward to event. A new year gift indeed – not just for the locals but for the entire country. No other exhibition offers a display window for trade and industry like the Numaish.
Products launched here have gone on to become a rage. They have long lasting brand recall. “Many actually wait for the Numaish to decide on their high value purchases,” says P. Chandra Sekhar Reddy, honorary secretary, Exhibition Society.
Irresistible outing
With just 50 stalls in 1938, the ‘Numaish Masnuaat-e-Mulki’ has sure grown beyond the wildest dreams of its founder, Mir Osman Ali Khan, the seventh Nizam.
With an entry ticket of Rs. 10 per head, it offers an outing few can resist.
Almost everything one can think of is there - garments, home appliances, kitchenware, ceramics, leather goods, perfumes, dry fruits.
For the foodies there are elaborate food courts serving sizzling kebabs, mouth-watering chaat and what not.
A mini train, giant wheel and numerous joy rides provide a rollicking time for kids.
