BlackBerry PlayBook update: Tablet OS v1.0.5 released

Research in Motion has released yet another update for the Tablet OS running on Blackberry PlayBook. Without being too fancy, this update adds some essential services and features like a proper FaceBook app, multilingual support and automatic Wi-Fi hotspot detection. These additions and tweaks are already being pushed to the users of Blackberry PlayBook in the form of update v1.0.5.

The biggest chunk of this update has gone towards increasing the utility of the Facebook app with basic features like being able to delete messages and upload videos. With this update, the Facebook app will get integrated into the OS as a standard feature. The update also improves the tablets power management software, which is now able to recognize the type of adapter that is plugged into the power port and warn the user if an incorrect type is being used. Network connectivity enhancements with this update include support for the TURN protocol (Traversal Using Relay NAT), which should improve video calls between private and public networks. In addition, the tablet will now automatically discover Wi-Fi hotspots while setting up a connection. Lastly, headset use will have a volume boost option that should be useful in and around noisy environments.

The update also adds support for French, Italian, Dutch, German, Spanish, and UK English, which should be good news for users in Europe. Also, developers can rejoice in knowing that PlayBook apps can now have an internal payment mechanism.
