Wet Tuesday wasn’t so bad

As the city received moderate rainfall on Tuesday, the transport system was thrown out of gear only for some time in the morning with 150 train services being cancelled until 5pm and traffic jams on roads.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), on Tuesday, the Colaba and Santa Cruz weather station recorded 2.6mm and 28.6mm rainfall respectively between 8.30am and 5.30pm.

On Monday, Mumbai received 185mm rainfall — the highest of this season and second highest in the month of September in the last decade.

“On Tuesday, north Mumbai, Thane and Kalyan got good rainfall. We are expecting good rainfall in next 24 hours because the upper air cyclonic circulation is still in Gujarat and the trough is also active between north Maharashtra and Kerala coast,” said VK Rajeev, IMD director.

IMD officials said the weather conditions are still favourable for heavy rainfall for the next 24 hours.

CR services hit
Most suburban trains ran empty in the afternoon with people preferring to stay indoors or taking the road. Nearly 150Central Railway services were cancelled until 5pm. Services on Western Railway, Harbour line and Trans Harbour line were delayed, but there were no cancellations.

“There was continuous heavy rainfall in Thane district. The waterlogged tracks affected movement of trains between Kalyan-Karjat/Khopoli and Kalyan–Kasara sections. The points and crossings in Kalyan area were clamped and locked as a safety precaution. This resulted in bunching of trains and delays,” said a CR spokesperson.

“Services on the south-east and north-east sections attained normalcy at 10.30am and 11.30am respectively. Though services did not come to a halt, they were running 45 minutes late.”

Crawling traffic
Traffic crawled in parts of the city, including Sakinaka, Ghatkopar, Chembur, Andheri and Vile Parle, thanks to the pothole-ridden roads. Andheri saw bumper-to-bumper traffic for several hours after a slab collapsed at the under-construction Metro rail bridge.

No flight disruptions
While the wet spell did not disrupt flight operations, people were stuck in traffic jams on the roads leading to the airport. However, there were not many cases of passengers missing their flight as the check-in deadline for domestic and international flights were relaxed by a few airlines.
