Kites is pasta, not biryani: Hrithik

Hrithik Roshan is happy with the global response to his latest: the West is raving about Kites, with many leading dailies in the UK and the US additionally giving him a ten on ten for his sculpted bod.

While he’s kicked at the overseas response to the film, he does make it clear that the domestic market’s response dampened the celebrations a wee bit. “Our country should be proud that, finally, one Indian film has made it to the US Top 10 list, that for the first time, 37 countries have shown an Indian film for the very first time. No other Indian film has entered these markets ever before, and these places have bought it on the strength of the film, after having watched it. Thirty-seven new countries! Kites has done it for the first time – but it’s sad that our people, instead of nurturing this new passion that has conquered so many new markets, are putting us down.” The media in the West has surely given him raving reports ... “Yes, LA Times, New York Times, Hollywood Reporter, everyone has said good things about the film, and God, our country is putting it down. For what agenda?” he asks.

Putting aside the question for the moment, what does he have to say about everyone talking about his sexy body in the film rather than Barbara’s? “I am ecstatic. They are taking a look at Bollywood in a different way, and we have done it,” says Hrithik, and his sense of humour returns, at last, as he says, “But here, they are so used to biryani, I tell you. They’ve been served just that for the last 10 years, and I said well, here, try some pasta now. Try something different,” he says, “My Twitter page is going crazy with 90 per cent of the people who’ve seen the film sending me messages of love – and that’s what’s keeping me bright and happy. The film has a target audience. It’s not a formula commercial, concocted film.

And see, it’s finding its own audience. The fact is, just because it’s my film, people are going with strings attached, of my image, the kind of films that I have done before – the larger than life ones, promising them Dhoom and Krrish – well, I have done something different. But that’s no reason to put down the film.”

There’ve been reports that one of the reasons why the film didn’t do as well as expected is because 90 per cent of it is in Spanish, with English subtitles. Does he agree?

“But even if it is in English or Spanish or Chinese, you can’t say the film is good or bad - how can you judge that? You can say it didn’t cater to this audience or that market, but you can’t judge the merit of the film, you know. That’s the honesty of the film – the character is born in Las Vegas, he knows only English. He meets a foreigner, who is a Mexican. Now, why will he speak in Hindi? We are just being honest to the film!” says Hrithik. He makes another pithy point, then, “Had the character spoken Hindi, the same critics would’ve said how dishonest, how can someone who’s never seen India speak in Hindi. It is so ridiculous. You can’t please them either ways.”

And what about Sussanne? How has she reacted to this, sort of, global love-hate reaction to the film? “She’s like my spiritual guardian. She is so bright and happy all the time - she’s constantly all smiles,” says Hrithik. And as to Barbara, reports of her not being too happy with things, of leaving on a note of disappointment...? “Barbara is right here in the country, in fact she is here till May 27; she is excited, she is happy, and she’s been tweeting saying just that,” he signs off.

In India Topless Nandana, but not Barbara?

The Hindhi version of kites doesn't flaunt a topless Hot Barbara Mori. While the international promos of the movie are raunchier. It shows Barbara Mori topless in a sizzling lip lock with Hrithik. The Indian audience gets a censored version of the promo as well as the movie.

So, why is India being denied the topless, sexy lip-lock? Doesn't Nandana Sen’s movie Rang Rasiya, shows her topless and has been cleared by the censor board.

So, is the Indian audience not mature enough? Payal Rohatgi, who has done ‘bold’ movies like Tauba Tauba agrees, “I think the Indian audience is not mature enough. Men download images to gratify themselves but movies are a different genre. Movies are meant for family watching and a raunchy promo will insure that family audiences don’t pull in. So movie makers are also vary,” says Payal Rohatgi.

Television star Sambhavana Seth feels the audience is not ready for such nudity. “For a Hollywood actress like Barbara Mori going topless may not be a big deal but for the Indian audience it is. It's a shock for me, if such bold scenes are shown people would stop watching movies with their children,” says Sambhavana

But yesteryear movies like Ram Teri Ganga Maili had covered frontal nudity which was shot aesthetically and accepted by the movie goers. However, actor Koena Mitra feels the audience is getting mature, “The audiences has accepted bold scenes in many films. Though our culture doesn’t support it, there have been films in the past that have had such bold scenes but they have been aesthetically shot. Though we may not be up for it, but if the same is shot gracefully and is in context with Kites, I am sure it would go down well with the audience.”

Is the Indian audience still prudish? “The view that the Indian audience is not mature, doesn't make sense. The audience we are talking about is net-savvy and can access the same online. The industry is living in dark ages. There isn’t any audience profiling to prove the level of maturity,” says Vinta Nanda, filmmaker.

Film critic Taran Adarsh says, “At the click of the button you can access information. Technology cannot be curtailed. Anything can be seen online even if you try to keep it away from film prints."

Hrithik is truly a 'Greek god': Barbara

She has a very heavy Mexican accent, and needs a translator to translate rapid spoken English.

But when she does speak, it is quite interesting, and as she struggles to form the words in her mind, she lets her voice convey all the emotions that her limited language lets her reveal. “I am so excited about Kites,” she says, “It is my first English film, my first Bollywood film and my first action film. It is also my first big budget movie.”

It’s also a first with Hrithik ... and talking of firsts, what was her first impression of Hrithik? As in, when she met Rakesh Roshan and he said ‘ok, you’re gonna star opposite this guy ... ’ “Now, I know that we look very good together.

It has been an amazing experience in my career. He is a great actor, the best co-star, and a great human being. It has been enjoyable and fun. But if you ask me about first impressions ... the first time I saw him was in Jodhaa Akbar. And I didn’t like him. The first thought that came to my mind was, ‘Oh my God, he is such a tough guy, is he going to act like this in Kites? All tough and male?’ and I didn’t like him at all. And then, I did a bit of research. I saw Lakshya – I liked it, and then I saw Koi Mil Gaya and I loooved it. And I realised he was a versatile actor. And finally, after some months, I met him in person, in Mumbai, and I was like, ‘he is such a handsome guy!’ I have heard that he’s called a Greek God and that is really true, I thought. He was with Sussanne and she was pregnant, and before you ask, she was very nice to me ... Pinki, Sunaina, the whole family was very nice to me.”

All is well between Barbara Mori and Sussanne Roshan

All seems well between Hrithik Roshan's wife Sussanne and his "Kites" co-star Barbara Mori after the two actors were linked together last year.

Sussanne says "it's great" to have Barbara back in India.

"Hey...I have been busy entertaining our 'Kites' team. Barbara is finally here and it's great to have her back again! Full power 'Kites'!" Sussanne posted on her Twitter page Wednesday.

Barbara, who features as Hrithik's lover in Rakesh Roshan's "Kites", landed in India Monday for the promotion of the movie. But they are now heading to the Maldives for an ad shoot. Sussanne is also going with them.

"Tonight we are off to Maldives for a Provogue shoot..yay! I love the sea...so deep and yet calm on the surface. Can't wait to snorkel," she wrote.

Last year, it was rumoured that Sussanne had moved back into her parents' house with her two children after Hrithik's alleged affair with Barbara. But Hrithik's father had dismissed these rumours then, saying they were "baseless".

An injured knee slows Hrithik down

Hrithik Roshan, undoubtedly one of the most sensational dancers Bollywood has ever seen, has been forced to slow down due to his constant knee problems. Hrithik had hurt his knee again while shooting for Kites in the US. Treatment followed and things seemed all right for a while. But now the actor has gone off to Singapore for treatment.

“In Singapore for a day treating my knee! Wish me luck guys! Getting back in action. Fingers crossed!” tweeted Hrithik on his profile. Kites is a dance-based love story starring Hrithik, Barbara Mori and Kangna Ranaut, which is scheduled for a summer release.

Hrithik Roshan-Barbara steamy scenes chopped?

After the leak of Kites hot trailer, the makers of the film are in for another publicity stunt. The latest we hear is that Rakesh Roshan has decided to chop the steamy scenes of Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori in Kites' Hindi version.

The news is doing the rounds that Rakesh has asked Brett Ratner to edit the intimate scenes between Hrithik and Barbara, as they would not go down too well with the Indian audience. However, the hot sequences will be retained for the English version.


In fact, Rakesh's decision to edit some certain sequences would create even more curiosity amongst the film buffs.

Hrithik starrer 'Kites' to hit screen on May 21

Filmmaker Rakesh Roshan's eagerly awaited romantic saga "Kites", which stars Hrithik Roshan and Mexican model Barbara Mori, will be released May 21.


The film has two versions - English and Hindi and the trailer of the Hindi version will hit 1,700 screens worldwide Friday, while the trailer of the English version will be released shortly on 1,000 screens. "We have always believed that Indian films and talent can enjoy the same success and recognition internationally as in India. 'Kites' is a first-of-its-kind Indian film and it has already generated huge interest. We are proud to present the first look to a worldwide audience," Sanjeev Lamba, CEO of Reliance BIG Pictures, said in an statement.
"Kites" is about two lovers on a thrilling journey filled with precious moments and unexpected betrayal.
Directed by Anurag Basu, the movie also stars Kangana Ranaut, Kabir Bedi and Nick Brown.
The English version of "Kites" is being reworked by Hollywood director Brett Ratner.
