WHO: 90% don’t donate blood

You can get blood from the blood banks in the city only if you are rich. The poor often find it very difficult to get it when they need it the most. The shortage is due to the lack of donors.

The World Health Organisation has confirmed that 90 per cent of the eligible individuals do not donate blood.

A single sachet of blood ranges from Rs 900 to Rs 1,200 depending on the blood components involved and the rarity of the blood group.

The district medical and health officer (DMHO), Dr Ch. Jayakumari, admitted that there was an acute shortage of blood and that many blood banks do not have enough stock. “Even if stocks are available, as many as 39 out of the 66 blood banks in the city have not renewed their licenses to operate,” she said.

The rising number of accidents has also led to a spurt in demand, she said.

The demand for blood has resulted in an increase in the number of un-licensed blood banks in the state.

“Around 30 per cent of such unlicensed blood banks cause widespread contamination of blood which can lead to HIV, Hepatitis B and other dreaded diseases,” said APSACS project director, Mr R.V. Chandravadan.
