Diabetes is very difficult to control but technological breakthroughs have changed that, said leading Diabetologist Jyothidev Kesavdev, here on Saturday. Dr. Kesavdev was here to promote awareness about the new MiniMed Paradigm REAL-Time System, the latest development in diabetes management.
Dr. Kesavdev said the new product, which combines a ‘smart’ insulin pump with a continuous glucose monitoring system, “will change the quality of life for diabetics.”
The pump can be programmed to suit your insulin requirement, which may vary depending on diet and exercise while the monitoring system displays trends, setting off an alarm if the glucose level needs to be controlled.
“There need not be any fear of wrong dosage because if there is a problem it will switch off” says Dr. Kesavdev.
He agrees that cost is a limitation but “economic analysis shows that intensive diabetic treatment is cost effective in the long run.” Medtronic, the medical technology company on whose initiative Dr. Kesavdev is here, hopes to make both patients and doctors more familiar with the product.
“Though the kit has been available in the Indian market for more than a year there only 70 ‘pump patients’ in Hyderabad as of now,” says Mr. Jagan Mohan from Medtronic India.
