Top 10 patriotic films of Bollywood

On the eve of our 62nd year of Independence
TEN UNFORGETTABLE Bollywood movies based on patriotism are listed below.

1. Mr India

Mr India, released in 1987 is a Bollywood science fiction superhero film directed by Shekhar Kapur. The movie deals with Mr India (Anil Kapoor), a simple man, fighting against the dangerous don Mogambo, best remembered for his quote "Mogambo Khush hua", who wants to destroy India and rule the world. The movie also introduces the unique concept of 'gadget', a watch which makes the wearer invisible. With the help of this gadget, Mr India tackles the corruption unleashed by Mogambo. This movie also has traces of comedy and is a complete entertainment package.

2. Roja

Directed by Mani Ratnam, this film bagged three National Film awards, including one for Best film on National Integration. What if your motherland’s enemies burned your country's flag in front of you what can you do? You might think of many answers but Roja explores one scenario. When the terrorists try to burn India’s flag before the hero Aurobindo Swami, he dives into the fire and rubs his body over it and thus extinguishes it. This has been one of the most sensitive films made on the Kashmir issue. Roja is a perfect combination of love and patriotism. This movie gave birth to the legendary A R Rahman who is today the country's top composer.

3. Sardar

It is not easy to cast for real-life characters. However Paresh Rawal does well as Sardar Vallabhai Patel. When Paresh Rawal was doing negative role, this movie is a welcome change for him. The movie shows the life and work of Sardar Patel in considerable detail. It shows all the intricate details of creation of India and Pakistan as two separate nations. At times, he is very tough against Jinnah's demands. At times he concedes to them, applying every political and diplomatic tactic.

4. Border

Border is arguably the best war film made in Bollywood in the past 25 years. Border throws light on the 1971 Indo-Pak war. The movie has many emotional scenes. Consider the scene where Suniel Shetty gets married and receives the message of war. He leaves the very next day to save his motherland. This kind of renunciation motivates people who aim for great causes. Also think of the climax when India wins the war and Sunny Deol sees the dead bodies of all soldiers from both sides and feels sad for all of them.

5. Lagaan

Lagaan, directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar, stars Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh. Lagaan is the perfect combo of cricket and Bollywood. Set in the backdrop of British rule, Lagaan shows the true worth of Indians when given a chance. A team of villagers manages to defeat a group of British officers in a cricket match and so win a wager that saves them taxes. The captain of the village team, played by Aamir Khan, shows the qualities of a true leader. He leads the villagers from the front in every field, be it real life or cricket.

6. The Legend of Bhagat Singh

In this film, Ajay Devgan plays the role of his lifetime. He perfectly fits into the character of Bhagat Singh and displays his passions for his country. There have been quite a few movies based on Bhagat Singh’s life and there is no doubt that this is the best among them. However, there can be some debates especially on the score of the characterisation of Mahatma Gandhi in this film. Factually it has never been established whether or not Gandhiji wanted the death of Bhagat Singh.

7. Swades

Unlike other patriotic films, this film does not have any villain nor does it deal with the relationship with any enemy country. It revolves around the life of a simple NRI, Shah Rukh Khan, who returns to his native for a vacation. So what does the hero fight against? He fights against the mentalities of his people. He refuses to call India the greatest country because of obvious shortcomings but at the same time he sees the strengths of India and what Indians should do to make India a great country. He teaches the people the importance of education and unity.

8. Chak De! India

This movie demonstrates how a person hailed as villain becomes the hero. Kabir Khan, a former hockey player, played by Shah Rukh Khan, was accused of match fixing when he failed against Pakistan. Soon he becomes the hero when he coaches a team of girls who go on to win the World Cup. He unites different girls from different backgrounds and different cultures and mentalities. He believes in only one policy, “jo nahi ho sakte hai, wahi to karma hai (what cannot happen, that only is to be done)”. This is arguably Yash Raj Film’s best movie of the decade.

9. Gandhi, My Father

This film directed by Feroz Abbas Khan released in 2007 and explores the troubled relationship between Harilal Gandhi (Akshaye Khanna) and Mahatma Gandhi (Darshan Jariwala). There have been many films based on Gandhiji’s life. This film is based on Mahatma vs Gandhi and revolves around the relationship between Gandhiji and his eldest son Harilal. This film portrays many occasions when Gandhiji puts society ahead of his son which results in a big split between father and the son. Akshaye Khanna delivers a superb performance and so does Darshan Jariwala.

10. A Wednesday

This film has unbeatable performances by Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher. This movie proves the ability of a common man. The hero of this film, played by Naseeruddin Shah, proves even a common man can fight the enemies of the country ie, the terrorists.Anupam Kher who plays the role of a police commissioner, suspects the hero wants to remove corruption from the system. Overall, A Wednesday is a perfect combo of thrill, class, innovation and the performance of actors.
