A guide for air passengers

While more and more problems connected with the airline industry are cropping up, air travellers are prone to innumerable hassles particularly with reference to refund of tickets, lost tickets, loss/damage of baggage, missing of flights and inconvenience caused due to e-ticketing and air accidents.
Advocate M.S. Srihari’s book, “Remedy for Air Travel Hassles”, (brought out by Ameya Publications) has provided detailed information on air services and the Consumer Protection Law relating to passenger air services, both domestic and international, and legal remedy for deficiency, if any, in services.
The author, a former employee of the Reserve Bank of India, has explained the intricacies of air travel, law governing such journeys and the judgments rendered in this regard for the benefit of air passengers. The book containing 22 chapters has reference to 150 judgments rendered by various consumer redressal forums, providing ready reference to air travellers and also the advocates. Mr. Srihari’s book, with a foreword by N. Kumar, judge of the High Court of Karnataka, provides valuable suggestions on missing baggage, denial of boarding despite having tickets, delay, re-schedule, cancellation of flights without due information, refund in case of lost ticket, misguidance by travel agent, poor quality of food service, improper handling of visa, passport and other documents, failure to settle air claims, unfair trade practices by airlines, and mental agony or harassment by airline staff.
In Chapter 22, “Air Services – the Indian scenario”, the author has included the hijack of Indian Airlines Kathmandu-New Delhi flight at Kandahar in Afghanistan, and related the Delhi State Consumer Commission’s compensation that directed Indian Airlines to pay Rs. 1 lakh each to all on board the flight for the agony and trauma suffered.

“As travellers we do have certain risks, and with air travel it is better for people to be informed. This book includes some fascinating accounts of people’s travels and troubles. It could prove to be general knowledge in air travel. For, this is the first time an analysis and documentation is available in a book format,” says Mr. Srihari.
