Why we love Diwali!

As the festive buzz begins, we tell you why we simply love the festival of lights. Burning calories
Whether you like it or not, you will burn calories while you shop till you drop at malls or bend/stretch while cleaning up your house.
It contributes towards guilt-free gluttony on the big day itself!
Feeling brand new
If you've noticed, in the run-up to Diwali, everyone's in a generous mood. Shops give massive discounts, salons offer special packages, parents are generous with their money, and even your spouse or boyfriend won't grumble too much about the shoes you bought to match your Diwali outfit. It's the best time to give yourself a makeover and even a boost of confidence - after all, there's nothing like a little retail therapy :)
Joy of giving
There's always a quiet satisfaction in helping those less fortunate than us. And Diwali is just another excuse to do so. The mountains of unwanted stuff - old or outgrown clothes, books, pencils - that we accumulate during our marathon pre-Diwali cleaning sessions will definitely spread a touch of joy at the orphanage, a street children's school or even a women's shelter.
Family time
It's the one time of the year your boss won't begrudge you vacation time so you can go home, because he/she has also been bitten by the festive bug.
It's also the time you return to the bosom of your entire extended family and catch up with everyone including cheek-pulling uncles and the cousin who was your best friend when you were younger, but has now moved to some other city for work.
Guilt-free eating
It's the only time of the year when you pack away your weighing scale, delete the word 'calorie' from your memory and eat to your heart's content. After all, Diwali is a once-a- year food fest you have a religious obligation to enjoy! It's where the ghee flows freely, fried snacks and mithais are in unlimited supply and your mom makes a fabulous feast. How can you miss that?
What's more, you know you aren't going to be the only one coming back to office a few pounds heavier.
Present time
Let's face it, there's a big, if hidden from the public, part of us that LOVES receiving presents. Parents, in-laws and spouses tend to give the best ones (read: expensive, diamante-studded gifts).
Down time
There's plenty of time to kill between a heavy lunch and a promised deep-fried snack time. It can be spent on a rare luxurious mid-afternoon nap; fighting over which Diwali special TV movie to watch; or playing tennis on the Xbox to make room for the next meal.
Thank god for the gym membership
As the scales groan under the weight of your newly acquired love handles, it firms up your resolve to finally put the very expensive annual gym membership to use.
