With tension continuing to prevail in the city owing to the TRS agitation, panic SMSes and rumours are spreading like wild fire. Fearing the worst, Hyderabadis are rushing to the nearest stores to stock up on food and fuel, in anticipation of a long siege.
Sandeep B., an M.Tech student who got an “SMS warning” that claimed there won’t be any fuel available in the city for at least a week, is now armed with enough fuel to last for a while. He says, “I got this news only post 10 pm, but I didn’t want to take any risk. I rushed to the nearest bunk to stock up on fuel, just in case things go out of control. I passed the news on to my friends, who also recieved similar warning messages. Even though it was late in the night, a long line of vehicles had already queued up in front of all the service stations.”
Sandeep is not the only person who is worried about the ongoing fuel crisis. Entrepreneur Pavan Reddy, who lives near Vidya Nagar, spent two days scouring the city for fuel to fill up his car’s tank and does not intend to repeat this act again in the next few days. “I faced quite some trouble in getting fuel for my car during the bandh,” he says. “There were long queues at almost every petrol pump in the city. Miraculously, I found a service station near the International Airport that was practically empty. Even as I filled up my car’s tank, there was already a long line of motorcycles right behind me, waiting to fill in fuel.”
Fuels worries don’t bother Srinivas Sameer, a student from Mufaqqam Jah Engineering College, as much as the “nightmare of getting stranded without cash.” Unsure about the predictability of banks and ATMs, he has withdrawn money for an entire week. “withdrawing money from ATMs has been really difficult since the past few days,” he says. “I live alone here and getting stuck without cash is the worst thing that can happen. I was forced to manage on low funds during the two-day bandh. I didn’t want a repeat, so this time I took no chances.”
Jewellery designer Khushboo Baid also decided to replenish her stock for perishable food for the week. “Fruits and vegetables were hard to come by during the days of the bandh,” she says. “As the situation in the city still looks bad, I have stocked up on fruits, vegetables and bread. I am prepared to face a few more days of bandh.”
