CM unhappy over police ‘restraint’, DGP apologises

The Chief Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, has expressed his displeasure at the police’s poor handling of the Panjagutta violence on Saturday to the director- general of police, Mr R.R. Girish Kumar.
The Chief Minister was upset that the unchecked violence in Panjagutta, where many commercial establishments were attacked, would create fear among the people and investors. “When we tell the police to maintain restraint it does not mean that they simply keep their hands in their pockets and watch the destruction,” the Chief Minister said.
For the first time since the Telangana struggle began a few days ago, the Chief Minister talked about investors losing confidence in Hyderabad. He referred to the IT sector’s telling the government that it would rethink its choice of Hyderabad as an investment destination once the economy recovered.
The DGP is said to have apologised for the incident and assured the Chief Minister that it would not be repeated. The Chief Minister told the police chief to keep the force on high alert and act tough against miscreants. His instructions are significant in view of the Chalo Assembly agitation on December 10 proposed by the Telangana Students Joint Action Committee.
The Central Reserve Police Force is already stationed in the state, but the government is likely to request more paramilitary forces for December 10.
Police said as many as 18 student unions have come together on a common platform and efforts were on to mobilise many more students and political activists to join the agitation. Police orders are to prevent the students from mobilising right in their respective districts. Police officers who have served in districts in Telangana have been posted to assist the local police.
Sources in the State police headquarters said that the TRS, BJP, ABVP and PDSU have been mobilising students and others for the Chalo Assembly agitation.
“We have information that at least 50,000 students will be mobilised,” said a senior intelligence official.
