Congress may invite KCR to Delhi for T

The Congress central leadership will step in on Wednesday to end the fast undertaken by Telangana Rashtra Samiti chief, Mr K. Chandrasekhar Rao, by inviting him for talks.

State leaders of the party are hoping that he would call off his 10-day-old fast on this cue, bringing an end to the violent agitation in the Telangana region for a separate state.

“We have got information from Delhi this afternoon that the Union finance minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, and the political advisor to the Congress president, Mr Ahmed Patel, will speak to Mr Chandrasekhar Rao and invite him for talks to Delhi,” said a Congress source. “They will also convince him to withdraw the fast since his health is deteriorating.”

The source added that the party was also in touch with the family members of Mr Chandrasekhar Rao. “They are also convinced that his condition is bad, but he is not heeding their requests,” said the source.

It is learnt that the Congress president, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, has asked the core committee members to be in touch with state Congress leadership to decide the issue.

The Chief Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, and the PCC chief, Mr D. Srinivas, spoke to Mr Ahmed Patel, Mr Pranab Mukherjee and Mr Veerappa Moily on the issue. They told the Central leaders that Mr Chandrasekhar Rao will not budge on vague assurances and would give up his fast only over a concrete promise on the ‘T’ issue.

“There will be another meeting of senior leaders and things will be clear before the proposed siege of the Assembly threatened by students,” source said.

Meanwhile, Mr Moily met Telangana and non-Telangana MPs in Delhi and held discussions. He has reportedly been asked by the party high command to prepare a report on possible ways to resolve the present crisis after eliciting the views of MPs. He held an hour-long meeting with Telangana MPs at Parliamentary party office in the national capital and asked them not to speak to the media until the issue was resolved.

Sources said the Telangana MPs favoured an assurance from the Centre in this regard. Later, non-Telangana MPs including Mr Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy also met Mr Moily. With Mr Rosaiah expected to arrive here on Wednesday, senior leaders would meet again to find a way to defuse the situation. The PCC chief, Mr D. Srinivas, who also attended the meeting, said some Congress MPs were favouring a separate state while others were against it.

Meanwhile, the party spokesperson, Mr Shakeel Ahmad, said the Congress was not opposed to a separate Telangana, but before a final decision is taken there was need for political consensus. He also criticised BJP’s stance on the issue. The RLD chief, Mr Ajit Singh, expressed solidarity with the Telangana struggle.

Meanwhile, Mr Srinivas said that the Congress high command was discussing the Telangana issue and would come out with a solution in two days.
