Throwing all rules to the winds and subverting the model code of conduct, a prominent political party distributed copious amounts of cash among poor voters to ‘buy’ their mandate in the bypolls scheduled for Tuesday.
Slum-dwellers who came home after their day’s work were thrilled to find a Rs 1,000 note attached to the voter slips dropped through their doors and windows.
The constituency is witnessing a prestigious battle between the APCC president, Mr D. Srinivas, the BJP’s Mr E. Lakshm-inarayana and the Telugu Desam candidate, Mr Narsa Reddy.
Interestingly, none of the political parties have bothered to complain about the cash gifts given by their rivals since they don’t want to earn the ire of poverty-stricken voters who are happy at the windfall.
Not only that, heavy betting worth lakhs of rupees is also on among bookies on who will be the winner, with most plumping in favour of Mr Srinivas. Betting is also on in Mancherial and Sirpur constituencies.
The ‘free cash gift’ is the animated topic of discussion in every locality, roadside tea stalls, hotels and offices on election eve.
Some poor families have used the cash to clear their petty debts while others made essential purchases. Free liquor has also reached most ‘eligible’ voters.
“They have distributed Rs 1,000 per household along with voters slip,” said Mr Ramulu, a labourer with family of six, while talking to this correspondent.
Distribution of cash and liquor is unabated despite ‘strict’ police supervision in the entire town. In fact, there have even been complaints about ‘bias’ in the distribution of cash with some ‘beneficiaries’ saying that it was not fair to give Rs 1,000 to a family of two as well as a family of six.
It is learnt that leaders had also paid each self-help group Rs 6,000 to Rs 9,000 depending on their strength and had also gifted amounts ranging up to Rs 5 lakh to caste organisations. In some areas, SHGs got up to Rs 20,000
Mr Sattaiah, who lives in a weaker section colony, was heard complaining to a party leader that 150 households had been missed in cash distribution. “They are our pucca voters and we will lose them if you don’t provide cash,” he warned openly.
The cash distribution has been done carefully through trusted local leaders and family members. Different brands of liquor were sent to caste organisations, youth clubs and trade unions.
“Our youth club got Rs 20,000 from a candidate,” said Mr Narasimlu, a resident of Ambedkar Colony. “We distributed the amount to all the members proportionately.”
Those members of the youth club who took part in the campaign got Rs 200 per day, apart from biriyani and beer. “We have never enjoyed such luxury,” he said.
Ms Sulochana, a housewife of Kotagally, said that her family earned good money in the run-up to the polls. “My husband and son took part in the campaign,” she said. “Such bypolls will give us some relief from financial difficulties.”
She also added a rider, “But money will not have any impact on our vote. We will vote as we wish.” So the voter does have the last word.

KCR’s son KTR to embark on his own Odarpu yatra
As the poll campaign is going on a feverish pitch, leaders are trying to find new methods to win over the support of voters.
TRS chief Chandrasekhar Rao’s son KT Rama Rao has decided to embark upon “Odarpu Yatra” to console the bereaved weavers’ families as part of byelection campaign in Siricilla constituency. The weavers constitute 25 per cent of the 2.10 lakh voters in the constituency.
Rao proposes to meet 600 weavers’ families who committed suicide in the last five years. Rao is contesting from this constituency for the second time.
Talking to media, Rao said that as an MLA, he had called on 200 families earlier and now he proposes to meet the rest. He said he would assure them of all possible help and will tell them that all their problems will be solved once the statehood to Telangana becomes a reality.
In 2009 elections, he defeated independent candidate K K Mahender Reddy with a thin margin of 110 votes. Mahendar Reddy had challenged the result in the high court which is still pending. As part of his poll campaign, TRS chief KCR will also meet some weavers on July 23. Party MP Vijayashanti will also meet the weavers’ families in Yellareddypet, Gabhiraopet and Siricilla on July 16.

TRS alleges betrayal, slams Telangana committee
The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) has rejected the terms of reference announced by the Central Government on Friday for the five member Justice B.N. Srikrishna committee looking into the issue of statehood for Telangana.
TRS chief K Chandrasekhara Rao, whose 11-day fast in December had forced the Central Government to announce that the process for formation of Telangana state would be initiated, said the terms of reference were unacceptable to people of Telangana.
"The centre has once again betrayed the people of Telangana. The terms of reference are not acceptable to us. We will continue the agitation and insist on acceptance of our resignations," the MP from Mahabubnagar told reporters.
The all-party Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Telangana will hold an emergency meeting on Friday evening to chalk outs its course of action.
The JAC, hoping that the terms of reference would be to lay a roadmap for carving out Telangana state with a clear time-frame, said New Delhi's announcement had disappointed the leaders.
"How can the Centre equate the demand for Telangana state with the demand for unified Andhra?" asked JAC convenor M Kodandaram.
The terms of reference include examining the demands of a separate state of Telangana as well as the demands for maintaining the present status of a united Andhra Pradesh.
A statement by the Home Ministry said that the committee would submit its report by December 31.
"Having a time-frame is no reason for accepting the terms of reference," said Kodandaram.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Bandaru Dattatreya said the central government had once again put the Telangana issue in cold storage.
The Osmania University students JAC has also rejected the terms of reference. The student leaders said separate state could be achieved only through a struggle.

JAC meet ends in utter chaos
The public meeting organised by the Kakatiya University students JAC came to an abrupt and chaotic end here with slogan-shouting students and Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi (MRPS) activists almost coming to blows.
An hour after the meeting began, popular folk singer Desapati Srinivas enthused the students by his renditions and eloquent speech. However, due to paucity of time, he had to cut short his speech to make way for MRPS leader Manda Krishna Madiga. But the large crowd comprising students insisted on Mr. Srinivas continuing his speech.
As soon as Mr. Krishna began his speech, scores of students below the dais hurled water sachets and empty water bottles in an attempt to stop him from speaking. Enraged by this, MRPS members tried to manhandle the other students. Mr. Srinivas too was beaten up.
The policemen who remained silent onlookers were forced to enter the scene. They surrounded the dais and some went up and vacated the place.
Accusations
Meanwhile, the tiff continued between the MRPS and other students accusing each other of trying to gain an upper hand. The police were compelled to use mild force to disperse the crowds from the venue thus bringing the meeting to an end. Social activist Swami Agnivesh, balladeer Vimala and women rights activist Sandhya and others had to leave.
The meeting itself began with lots of problems due to increased restrictions from the police in the wake of High Court’s order.
Earlier, the speakers, including TRS ideologue K Jayashankar, academics T Papi Reddy, K. Venkatanarayana, A. Sitaram Naik and some student leaders wanted the students to continue their struggle till separate Telangana was achieved. They listed the injustices done to the Telangana region for long.
They wanted the students not to allow political leaders into their movement. The students were asked not to lose heart and commit suicide in a fit of emotion. Instead, the students should patiently carry on their agitation.

Students, police clash in OU
Police and students fought pitched battles at the Osmania University on Wednesday as violence erupted during the funeral procession of K. Venugopal Reddy, a student who committed suicide on Tuesday pained at the delay in the formation of Telangana.
A mob at OU set fire to two police vehicles, damaged a third one and pelted stones at the police personnel. Cops then lathicharged the mob and and fired over 30 tear gas shells to disperse them. Over 40 people, including 15 cops were injured in the violence.
Following the clashes, the Telangana Joint Action Committee decided to extend the bandh to Thursday to protest against the lathicharge on students. The APSRTC, which resumed its services on Wednesday, is likely to cancel its services on Thursday in view of bandh.
However, Krishank, the OU JAC member, said RTC was being exempted from the bandh because of Samakka Jatara that will be held on Thursday at Warangal. “We are also exempting petrol bunks from the bandh,” he said.
Earlier in the day, thousands of Telangana activists gathered at the Arts College building where Venugopal’s body was kept. Police in riot gear was deployed in large numbers in the campus.
Trouble erupted near the Ladies Hostel around 11 am, after police prevented students from taking out a procession with the body from the NCC Gate. The situation spiralled out of control and students and police clashed with each other for over an hour.

Centre to set up new panel on T in 48 hours
The Centre is expected to announce a committee to undertake an exercise to resolve the Telangana issue in the next 48 hours. Before that, the Congress core group is expected to meet on Friday.
The Centre is moving forward after a series of meetings here with the leaders of eight recognised parties in Andhra Pradesh, jointly and individually, over the last three days.
A delegation comprising Andhra Pradesh officials, including some top police officers, are expected to reach New Delhi on Friday and hold meetings with the Union home minister, Mr P. Chidambaram.
They will discuss the ground situation in the state at a time when a section in the state is toying with the idea of whether Hyderabad can be made a Union Territory.
Officials in Hyderabad denied that they had been summoned for such a meeting. Authoritative sources in the ruling UPA on Thursday indicated a formal announcement of a committee would be made “most probably on Saturday”.
The government decided to move forward after the Andhra political leaders agreed to resolve the issue through discussion instead of violent agitation. Significantly, the Telugu Desam (TD) and the Praja Rajya (PR), which have been fighting for an united Andhra Pradesh, are divided on the Telangana issue. This division came to the fore at an eight-party meeting called by Mr Chidambaram on January 5.
While the Congress has already ruled out the option of imposition of President’s Rule in the state, the Centre is treading cautiously after realising that the agitation on smaller states can spread to Maharashtra, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.
The Congress core group comprises the party chief, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, the finance minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, the defence minister, Mr A.K. Antony, Mr Chidambaram, and the Congress president’s political secretary, Mr Ahmed Patel.

Telangana meet ends without any decision
The all-party meeting on Telangana convened by Centre in New Delhi on Tuesday, Jan 5, ended inconclusively after parties failed to take any decision on the issue

After the meeting, Chidambaram said, "Government of India will act on the sense of the Telangana meeting within a reasonable timeframe."
"It was clear at the meeting that political parties were divided on the issue. We will take these views to the Prime Minister and senior members of the Government and then we will formulate the further course of action," he added.
"We have expressed our views at the meeting and they have been noted by the Central government," said a joint statement, signed by leaders, issued at the end of the meeting.
"Meanwhile, it is our earnest appeal that peace, harmony and law and order should be maintained in the state," the joint statement said.
"No decision was taken at the meeting. We are waiting for the final response," TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao told reporters.
Praja Rajyam chief Chiranjeevi said he had made clear his party's stand that it stood for a united Andhra Pradesh.
"It is only the beginning of the process," he said without elaborating.

Minister gets notice for Rosaiah attack
The Congress high command has served a show cause notice on the IT minister, Mr Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, for criticising the Chief Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, and bringing disrepute to the party.
The AICC general secretary, Mr Janardhan Dwivedi, issued the notice and gave the minister a week’s time to reply.
Two MPs, one from Telangana region and one from elsewhere in AP, were also to be issued similar notices for violating party discipline and approaching the media, it was learnt late Friday night.
Mr Venkat Reddy had sharply criticised Mr Rosaiah before the media on Thursday and had accused him of acting like the Chief Minister of Andhra region.
Mr Venkat reddy has also angered the high command by refusing to withdraw his resignation unlike other ministers.
He also said that the Chief Minister’s comment on industries moving away from the state because of protests showed his bias against Telangana.
Other ministers too had objected to his remarks against the Chief Minister.
Mr Rosaiah had sent a report on the ‘intolerable’ behaviour of the minister to the high command and demanded that he be thrown out of the cabinet. However, the high command decided to serve a show cause notice for now.

2 lakh students take to streets for T
On the call given by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of private educational institutions, over two lakh students in the city and elsewhere in the district, took to the streets from 10 am to 12 noon, raising pro-Telangana slogans on Tuesday. On NH 202, students also took out pro-Telangana rallies at different places, blocking traffic from Warangal to Eturanagaram.
At Kakatiya University (KU) where nine KU JAC members are on a fast-unto-death since Monday, people from all walks of life including students and local politicians thronged the hunger strike site at SDLCE, KU to extend moral support.
The KUJAC, which is part of the Telangana Students’ JAC consisting of all six universities in the T-region, has banned the use of party flags in the varsity.
“Those who come to express solidarity with the agitating students have been requested not to carry any party flag to the hunger strike site as the T-agitation should not be given a political colour,” said Mr K. Vasudeva Reddy, KUJAC Warangal district convenor.
Rallies by Intermediate, degree, PG, engineering, pharmacy, BEd and other professional courses students’ kept arriving in the campus. Those visiting the hunger strike site have pro-mised to sponsor all needs of the students including food, tents, water, placards, loudspeakers and others.
“The KU employees JAC has promised to provide us with food,” said Mr Vasudeva Reddy. On Tuesday, Mr Puli Ravi, Telangana NRIs’ JAC representative donated Rs 25,000 to the KUJAC.
Similarly, Mr ‘Karate’ Prabhakar, Praja Telangana (urban) president donated Rs 1.30 lakh to the KUJAC on Monday as ex-gratia for all T-victims in the district.
When TD politburo member Mr K. Srihari came to the KU, students demanded resignations of all Telangana TD politicians from their party. Assuaging their feelings, Mr Srihari said, “Telangana state is more important than the TD. If TD chief Mr N. Chandrab-abu Naidu says no to Telangana, we will be with you.”
Meanwhile, KUJAC me-mbers demanded immediate medical support for Kaviraj, an OU student, whose kidneys had failed during participation in the T-agitation.

Law student held for Nagam attack
The sleuths of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) on Monday arrested a law student in connection with the attack on the Telugu Desam MLA and former minister, Mr Nagam Janardhan Reddy.
The CID officials said more arrests — for damaging MLAs’ vehicles on December 24 — are on the cards.
T. Rahul Reddy, 20, a second year law student and the son of one Mr Hitendar Reddy was the fourth accused arrested in Nagam Janardhan Reddy attack case. He has been booked for unlawful assembly and rioting.
The DGP, Mr R.R. Girish Kumar, said, “Students have admitted that some ‘outsiders’ had come to the campus and resorted to violence. Don’t take police for granted: DGP
The director-general of police, Mr R.R. Girish Kumar, on Monday told political parties not to take the police for granted, and took serious objection to leaders naming and accusing senior cops of being partial.
The Telangana Rashtra Samiti president, Mr K. Chandrasekhar Rao, while addressing the Joint Action Committee meeting on Friday, had named four inspectors-general of police and accused them of ill-treating students of Osmania University and warned that he would teach them a lesson in future.
Leaders from Andhra and Rayalaseema too made allegations against the police officers at Anantapur and Vijayawada.
IPS officers took serious note of all this and complained that such statements had demoralised the police force. Following this, the DGP came out with strongly worded statement in support of his force on Monday.

He further said that there was no dichotomy in government instructions. “The government told us that peaceful agitation shall be allowed and violence shall not be tolerated,” said Mr Girish Kumar.
“It is easy to throw stones on the police like throwing stones on buses,” he said. “Character assassination and motive attribution to police is not good. Such allegations of partiality affect the motivation of the force.”
He added that police exhibited utmost restraint in dealing with the agitation.
“Our men are on duty day and night,” he said. “Police is under great pressure as many of the elected representatives including two MPs, four MLCs and 21 MLAs are on fast unto death. It is a tough time for police. But we handled them with utmost restraint.”
The DGP also asked the electronic media not to repeatedly telecast violent incidents.
“When the same clippings are on air from morning to evening this will affect the public mind,” he said.
He added that commissioners of police could restrain channels and cable operators.

Students may lose an academic year
Even as student union leaders and political parties are agitating for a separate Telangana state, forcing the city’s universities to stay shut for over a month, thousands of students studying in these universities and their affiliated colleges stand a risk of losing an academic year. JNTU and OU officials admit that if the current situation continues for another 15 days, nothing can be done to salvage the year. If the exams are not held soon, city professors fear the students will have to forego a whole year as they will be behind schedule.
What’s worse is the fact that agitating students are ready to “forego” this academic year for separate statehood and are calling it the “Telangana sadhana year.”
“We have been requesting the students to conduct their protests and attend classes simultaneously. If classes don’t start in the next couple of days, thousands of students might not get their degrees on time this year,” says Prof Sudarshan Rao, Principal, OU Arts college.
Caught in this crossfire are students of 300 engineering colleges and 98 MBA institutions affiliated to JNTU. The university which should have commenced its second semester by now, hasn’t yet completed its first semester exams. Prof. Lal Kishore, rector of JNTU says the chances of salvaging this academic year are slim. “We have lost 40 working days. This will adversely affect the prospects of final year students looking for jobs.”
Students who had plans to go abroad or appear for competitive examinations are also in panic mode. Y. Kiranmayee, an engineering student of OU College of Technology, says, “From this year onwards, they have permitted third year students to apply for GATE. The exam will have questions from the final year syllabus too. We haven’t even started our second semester classes yet. The political issue that is being debated on is important, but not at the cost of our careers.”
Srinisha Reddy, a final year M.Sc student couldn’t agree more. “After my final year, I plan to take up research. The last semester needs about four months of classes and laboratory work. If we don’t get our degrees on time, our career goals will take a beating.”
B. Ashok, student of VNR College of Engineering says, “To study abroad, we need recommendation letters and graduation certificates. We’ll lose six months if we can’t apply for the current intake.”
Prof Sudharshan Rao, adds, “We don’t mind working overtime to conduct classes in the two weeks of preparatory holidays and summer vacations. But the agitating students should cooperate.”

Konda Surekha becomes active for T-state.
konda surekha, well known Congress MLA and a staunch follower of YS Rajashekhara Reddy has become active yet again. Followed by the death of YSR was her resignation to the ministry, when she shook the state politics bargaining Chief Ministerial position for YS Jaganmohan Reddy.
From then on, konda surekha gathered to be in limelight for some reason or the other. “Yesterday’s disappointing statement from Chidambaram has hurt the moralities of Telangana people. Ramu backs Lagadapati on Telagana
Filmmaker Ramgopal Varma has pledged his support to the Vijayawada MP, Mr Lagadapati Rajgopal, who is agitating for a united Andhra Pradesh.
Varma, wrote in his blog that Mr Rajgopal was his junior in Sidhartha College in Vijayawada and that he was a sincere student leader who always helped his fellow students.
Varma said that he and his friends used to help and shield Mr Rajagopal whenever there were fights among student groups.
“After college I lost touch with him as I moved into the Mumbai film industry and except occasionally bumping into him at some function I never really met him. But today when I see him on TV in the eye of the political storm raging across Andhra Pradesh in the context of the Samaikhyandhra movement, I see exactly the same Rajgopal who I used to move around with 25 years ago,” Varma has written in his blog.
The ace director also narrated a few incidents about their college days which showed Mr Rajagopal as a leader.
He claimed that though he doesn’t know anything about the current unrest in the state, he believes in a united Andhra Pradesh because Mr Rajgopal believes in it.
“I am neither into politics nor do I have any understanding of what the Samai-khyandhra or the Telangana movement is really all about, but one thing I
want to say now for sure is that if Rajgopal believes that Samaikhyandhra is good for Andhra Pradesh
then I also believe in it because I believe in his sincerity and capability which I witnessed firsthand and I believe there can be no better sincere leader than Rajgopal.”

Lagadapati escapes as 200 cops watch
The fasting Vijayawada MP, Mr Lagadapati Rajagopal, escaped from the Vijayawada Government Hospital in full view of almost 200 police personnel and dozens of admirers.
The MP, whose fast entered the sixth day on Sunday, came to the ground floor of the hospital from his first floor ward, boarded a Qualis vehicle and drove out at about 10.45 pm. Witnesses said five more vehicles followed it.
Mr Rajagopal was expected to be shifted to a corporate hospital at Mangalagiri, 15 km from Vijayawada, and seemed to have taken advantage of the uncertainty. No one stopped the convoy as he drove out.
It was only when the convoy did not reach the Mangalagiri hospital at 11.30 pm that police realised the MP had given them the slip. Amidst allegations that he had been allowed to escape, the police sounded a red alert for Mr Rajagopal and launched a hunt to find him.
The government hospital is located on the national highway that leads to Visakhapatnam on one side and to Hyderabad on the other. Police searched the hospital as well, thinking he could be hiding there, but could not find the MP.
Mr Rajagopal had been shifted to the government hospital on Thursday and the government had refused to shift him to the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (Nims) fearing disturbances.
He had vociferously protested the “rude behaviour of the police” and the “biased attitude” of the government against the united Andhra agitation in the coastal districts and Rayalaseema. He had refused to take medicine and call off his fast.
Meanwhile, additional security forces are being rushed to the districts as the condition of elected representatives who are on a fast-unto-death for a united Andhra Pradesh is turning critical.
The Hyderabad police commissioner, Mr B. Prasada Rao, said, “We have no instructions from the government so far to shift the leaders who are on hunger strike to Nims. There are 30 platoons of additional forces available in the city. We are prepared to thwart any untoward incidents.”
The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) asked the government to consider shifting MLC Mr Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy, and MLA, Mr D. Umamaheswara Rao, Nims.
Dr N. Suneetha, daughter of Mr Vivekananda Reddy, in an appeal to the SHRC, had said that her father is suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and requires medical care. She said there was no facility in Kadapa and he should be shifted to Nims.
A student identified as Mr Chandrasekhar who set himself on fire protesting the arrest of Mr Vivekananda Reddy succumbed to burns at Ruia Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) in Kadapa. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams board member, Mr Ch. Bhaskara Reddy, who is on hunger strike in jail, was shifted to Rims, Tirupati. He was earlier arrested on the charge of being involved in violence.
In another case, a lawyer, Mr B. Venkateswara Rao complained to the SHRC that Krishna and Vijayawada administration is indifferent to the health of Mylavaram MLA Mr D. Umamaheswara Rao who started his fast-unto-death on December 13.
“Mr Umamaheswara Rao may slip into coma and the circumstances warrant he be shifted from Vijayawada hospital to Nims in Hyderabad,” Mr B.V. Rao said. Responding to the petition, the SHRC gave directions to consider the plea of shifting Mr Umamaheswara Rao to Nims. On Saturday, Mr Rao was admitted to the intensive care unit at Vijayawada General Hospital, but when his blood pressure began to fluctuate he was moved to the NRI general hospital near Mangalgiri in Guntur district on Sunday.
Together with him, the former mayor, Ms P. Anuradha, and a Telugu Desam activist, Mr Papaiah Chowdary, were also shifted. Mr Umamaheswara Rao has refused to call off the stir till the Union government scraps the decision for a separate state of Telangana. The TD is angry that the MLA and the other two leaders have not been admitted to Nims. The government has bluntly refused their demand citing law and order problems.
The MLC and the TD leader, Mr. Y. Babu Rajendra Prasad, accused the government of bias. He said that the state government had shifted Telangana Rastra Samiti chief, Mr K. '5,000 for climbing cell-tower, 50,000 for rasta roko'

They are paying Rs 5,000 per head to climb the cell towers, Rs 25,000 for damaging the buses and Rs 50,000 for staging rasta rooks. I have evidences for all of them,” he said.

Rosaiah clued out, asks for ideas
The Chief Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, confessed on Thursday that he was clueless on how to resolve the crisis caused by agitations for and against Telangana in the state.
He also observed that there was unanimity among people of Andhra and Rayalaseema on the need for an integrated state.
“Agitations in coastal and Rayalaseema were spontaneous and was not sponsored by political parties,” said Mr Rosaiah. “The agitation for integrated state is intensifying.” Talking to reporters here, the Chief Minister said he was making a sincere appeal to media, politicians, officials and others to give suggestions on how to solve the current impasse. “People having ideas can meet me in private and discuss,” he said.
Mr Rosaiah said that the present political situation was unique since the political parties including the regional parties were split on the lines of Telangana and united Andhra.
The agitations in the recent weeks had also hit the development of the state, he said. “Poor people are being denied bread and butter as the government could not execute works under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme,” he said. “The government is not getting tax revenues as there is no business activity and this will have a cascading effect on welfare schemes.”
The Chief Minister said that students were denied education because of the closure of institutions and prices of essential commodities and vegetables had gone up as the transport sector came to a standstill.
Though Telangana calmed down following the statement by the Union home minister, Mr P Chidambaram, violence erupted in the two other regions, he said. When asked when he would go to the national capital to discuss the issue with the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, and the UPA chairperson, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, the Chief Minister quipped: “It is very cold in Delhi.”

‘I am Home Minister for entire State’
P. Sabitha Indra Reddy has objected to the charge levelled against her by Telugu Desam legislators that she was acting as Home Minister of Telangana region and trying to suppress the students’ agitation in universities in Andhra and Rayalaseema regions.
She said she was Home Minister for the entire State and not merely for Telangana and, as such, none must misinterpret the steps taken by her as they were aimed at overall maintenance of law and order in the entire State. The TDP had alleged that she was soft in dealing with the students of Osmania University, but acting differently in respect of students in Andhra and Rayalaseema regions.
Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday after Chief Minister K. Rosaiah reviewed the situation at a meeting attended by Director General of Police R.R. Girish Kumar and others, Ms. Sabitha denied having given a different treatment to students of non-Telangana regions.

She said the police would not intervene as long as students organised agitations peacefully without damaging properties, public and private. She asked the police to exercise utmost restraint while dealing with agitators, especially students. At the same time, she appealed to students to be patient till a decision was taken by the Centre and extend cooperation for maintenance of law and order. She indicated that IG of Police Charu Sinha would remain in Anantapur.
Meanwhile, IG of Police A.R. Anuradha, who is the police spokesperson, said protests, dharnas and relay fasts were “all peaceful” on Wednesday except for some stray incidents. There were rail rokos at Vijayawada, Tadepalligudem, Vinukonda, Pullampet, Kondapuram, Nandalur and Kalamala and road blockades at 49 other places.
She said the situation, by and large, was peaceful. Agitators damaged the Doordarshan reception centre at Nandyal, a mandal resource centre at Rajampet and the office of the Praja Rajyam at Kamareddy.

She said Ms Nannapaneni Rajakumari and Kalava Srinivas, both Telugu Desam leaders, were among the 27 persons arrested on Wednesday in the State.

Chiru quits to be ‘hero’, T-fire engulfs films of kin
The Praja Rajyam chief, Chiranjeevi, has decided to resign his membership in the Assembly on Thursday to take up the cause of a united Andhra Pradesh even as Telangana agitators hit the streets again, attacking theatres screening films of his family members.
Sources said Chiranjeevi has decided that this is the right moment to wrest the leadership of the united Andhra Pradesh agitation. He will visit Tirupati on Friday to start the campaign against the division of the state.
Infuriated by Chiranjeevi’s stance, Telangana agitators forcibly stalled screenings of his nephew Allu Arjun’s Arya-2 and son Ramcharan Teja’s Magadheera in Hyderabad and other places on Wednesday.
Telangana Rashtra Samiti activists also vent their ire at cutouts of Junior NTR’s Adurs at Sairam theatre and those of Allu Arjun and Ramcharan Teja in Karimnagar.
Students of the joint action committee staged a dharna in front of the Praja Rajyam office at Jubilee Hills in the city, raising slogans against Chiranjeevi and warning him not to take a stance in favour of United Andhra.
In Warangal, irate students of the Kakatiya University decided to impose a ban on films starring Chiranjeevi family members including Allu Arjun, Ram Charan Teja, Allu Arvind, Pawan Kalyan.
On Wednesday, Kakatiya University JAC members including activists of ABVP and Telangana Graduates Association picketed Amrutha theatre in Hanamkonda, where Allu Arjun’s film was being screened.
They also stopped the screenings of Magadheera and Arya2 in Radhika and Sunil theatres respectively.
“Movies of all actors, directors or producers,who have taken an anti-Telangana stance would be banned in the city,” said Prof K. Venkatanarayana, president of the Telangana Eikya Vedika.
Meanwhile, activists of newly formed Telangana Youth Force took out a rally at Moosapet in the capital and burnt the effigy of Vijayawada MP, Mr L. Rajagopal, who has been vocally campaigning against the division of the state.
“There is a conspiracy to prevent separate statehood for Telangana,” said Mr M. Ajay of Telangana Youth Force.
“We will restart the agitation at full force to stop all efforts to water down the Telangana movement.”
In the wake of the renewed agitation, police has intensified patrolling in Hyderabad and sensitive districts of Telangana.
“After Chiranjeevi’s statement there were attacks on film theatres in Telangana,” said the Inspector General of Police, Ms A.R. Anuradha. “We are taking steps to prevent violence. The Prajar Rjyam office at Kamareddy was also damaged.”

Andhra, T activists get creative
United Andhra’ and ‘Separate Telangana’ are not slogans raised by politicians alone. They are also churning the minds of writers, singers and filmmakers, who are using their creative tools to popularise them.
A few have started websites, others are posting videos on You Tube and still others are making films and bringing out albums. In fact, the buzz on the issue resembles the kind of excitement an election evokes in the state, except that it is even more heartfelt.
Arun Varma, an MBA graduate who is against division has started a forum http://samaikyaandhra.org for people to voice their opinions. “A section of the media is biased and we want to express our opinion. we started a website so that we too can have a say,” Varma says. “I am also starting an SMS service. I will document the whole thing and forward it to the Prime Minister’s office. Our aim is to provide a platform for those who want to stay united.”
Telangana agitators who have been very calm this week are now planning to set up a similar website to counter the campaign for a united state. OU students have already put up www.vote4Telangana.com, which details the history of the Telangana movement and the need to carve out a separate state. “We will do our best to realise the dream of the formation of Telangana,” says Rama Rao, member of Osmania joint action committee. He adds that agitators are not aggressive since a separate state has been promised.
“But since there is a united state demand all of a sudden, we are also using You Tube and other websites to propagate our need to divide,” adds Rama Rao.
Meanwhile, Telangana — Still seeking justice, a documentary, uploaded on You Tube has become quite popular. It has facts and figures of the underdevelopment in Telangana districts.
In contrast, singer Dr Ghazal Srinivas has come up with a song Oye Teluguvada... padha adhe velugu vada, which is aired on all the TV channels asking Telugu people to stay united. “Telugu recently got classical language status,” he says. “If we split, the language will end up becoming a dialect and die someday.” He points out that demands for Telangana, separate Andhra, Kalinga Andhra and Greater Rayalaseema have already come up.
The film industry has also responded to the latest developments. P.C. Aditya, director, Mahaprasthanam, on the life of the former CM, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, is planning a movie on this topic. He claims that though he is for a united state, he will also highlight the backwardness of Telangana.
“My movie will focus on the problems of people from Telangana region and why the demand for separate state came up,” he says. “But it will stress the need to stay united.”
