Several bigwigs including politicians and businessmen have started lobbying for the post of chairperson of the Tirumala Tirupati Devastanams (TTD), which is going to fall vacant on August 24.
Apart from the outgoing chairman and former MP, Mr D.K. Audikesavulu Naidu, the five-time Guntur MP, Mr Rayapati Sambasiva Rao, the industrialist, Mr Grandhi Mallikarjuna Rao, the former Rajya Sabha member, Mr Girish Sanghi and Mrs Indira Reddy, two-term TTD Board member and wife of former MP, Mr T. Subbirami Reddy, are jostling for the post.
TTD sources said that Mr Audikesavulu, who has been chairman for two terms, is trying for another stint and is influencing the Congress high command to achieve this. In 2008, the high command had suggested his name to the then chief minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, and the latter had obliged.
Mr Audikesavulu Naidu, who was then a Telugu Desam MP, had helped out the UPA government during the trust vote in the Lok Sabha by disobeying the party whip. His appointment as TTD chairperson was seen as a quid pro quo gesture. Dr Reddy even dumped his loyalist, Mr B. Karunakara Reddy, to appoint Mr Audikesavulu.
Though Mr Audikesavulu had stirred up controversy during his tenure by allowing special VVIP Darshan and pujas at Tirumala to businessmen at odd timings causing inconvenience to devotees, he is confident of getting another term.
However, some Telugu news channels have started a campaign to stymie his chances by portraying him as pro-rich and against ordinary devotees.

TTD official’s stint cut
The AP High Court on Monday suspended an order issued by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams extending the service of Mr P. Seshadri, or “Dollar” Seshadri, former incharge of the Lord Venkateswara temple treasury (Bokkasam).
Mr Seshadri’s name reportedly figures in the case of missing of gold dollars from the treasury. The officer had retired from service on July 31, 2006, and was given a five-year extension by the TTD, where he was working as officer on special duty.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Anil R. Dave and Justice C.V. Nagarjuna Reddy, while dealing with a petition filed by Mr M. Gopal Reddy of Tirupati, suspended the operation of the order issued for extending the service of Mr Seshadri.
The petitioner told the court that the role of Mr Seshadri was being doubted in the case of missing of gold dollars from the temple treasury. His name has been mentioned in two vigilance reports and the reports categorically mentioned that Mr Seshadri should not be continued in office.
The petitioner urged the court to conduct narcoanalysis, brain-mapping and lie detector tests on Mr Seshadri. The court asked the TTD to file a counter affidavit on the petition.
The TTD executive officer, Mr I.Y.R. Krishna Rao, was is in Delhi on Monday said that he was not aware of the HC interim order.
Opposition parties welcomed the order. The Telugu Desam general secretary, Mr Varla Ramaiah, said his party had been demanding Mr Seshadri’s removal for the last one year, but the TTD had not taken any decision against him.The Praja Rajyam state organising secretary, Mr Saikam Jayachandra Reddy, who spearheaded an agitation against Mr Seshadri a few months ago, said: “The court order honours the sentiments of the devotees of the Lord. At least from now onwards, the TTD should be cautious in protecting the jewels of the Lord.”

Tirupati laddus get GI status
The famous Tirupati laddu given as prasadam to lakhs of devotees at the Lord Venkateswara Temple for three centuries has been awarded geographical copyright.
The “geographical indication” status makes the Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), which runs the renowned shrine, the exclusive manufacturer and marketer of the laddu.
It was in March 2008 that the TTD Trust Board submitted its application to the Geographical Indication Registry in Chennai. “The laddu is now protected under law and nobody can copy it,” said Mr G.L. Verma, assistant registrar of Trade Marks and GI in Chennai.
The high demand for the laddu from devotees had spawned a major black market trade in and around the temple in the last two decades. Fake laddus were sold all over. The TTD is hoping that the GI status would end this.
The mouth watering laddu is prepared using Besan flour, sugar, cashew nuts, cardamom, ghee, oil, sugar candy, raisins and almonds.
It comes in two sizes — the small one weighs about 174 grams, whereas the big ones weigh between 700 and 720 grams. About 2.5 lakh laddus are prepared daily in the temple. The laddu was priced just Rs 3 in 1989 but now sells at Rs 25 a piece.
Historians say that laddu prasadam was first given to devotees 300 years ago during the times of the Mahants at Tirumala.
But history alone cannot explain the allure of the laddu. It is the legend that sanctifies it. According to lore, the laddu was first prepared by Goddess Vakula Devi, mother of Lord Venkateswara, since it was the favorite dish of her son. Perhaps that is why devotees feel that extra savour in it.

YSR had special attachment for Tirumala
The special attachment that the Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy had for Tirumala needs no mention. He had visited Tirupati on over two dozen occasions and motored up the Tirumala on almost all the times to offer prayers to Lord Venkateswara.
Also, he successfully transformed the TTD, which was till then a religious body, into a major delivery channel to achieve many of the government’s social obligations.
Even in the height of proselytization charges that rocked the Tirumala in 2005-06, the YSR regime left no stone unturned to drive home the message loud and clear that it would not tolerate any delinquency in bringing the accused to book.
When a Government Order issued in early 2006 was misconstrued as limiting the extent of the seven hills to only two, which created a furore across the country, Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy came forward to put the record straight.
After laying the foundation for SV Vedic University here in August 2006, he announced that Tirumala would have ‘all the seven hills’ and the area of 10 1/3 sq. miles around the temple would continue to be under the control of the TTD.
YSR got several projects inaugurated at Tirumala, keeping in view the growing demands of pilgrims. Lakshmi Narasimha (Tarigonda), Gandi Anjaneya (Kadapa), Varadaraja (Nagari) and Lakshmi Venkateswara (Devuni Kadapa) temples languishing for funds were brought under the TTD roof for better maintenance. This apart, he sanctioned Rs.2,000 per month for maintenance of other small temples.
Schemes launched
‘Kalyanamasthu’, the mass marriage programme, became an instant hit where weddings were performed to the poor brides and grooms with blessings of Lord Balaji. Performing the Lord’s celestial wedding (Kalyanotsavam) in metro cities, slums and Dalitwadas was another novel idea to reach out the glory of Lord Venkateswara as well as to get back the ‘excluded’ sections into the fold of Hinduism.
‘Ayushmanbhava’, a scheme to provide life insurance cover to priests and pundits in the 65-75 years age group, was inaugurated in February this year. ‘Satha Kundatmaka Homam’ was performed in Chennai and Hyderabad to propitiate the rain god.
Under ‘Geetha Govindam’, copies of ‘Bhagavadgita’ were distributed to prisoners to bring repentance in them and make them useful to the society.
‘Padmavathi Ammavari Pustaka Prasadam’ was a TTD-funded project to distribute textbooks to all the poor students of State-run schools. ‘Sravanam’ is another TTD-run scheme aimed at identifying aural disability in infants and providing early intervention to treat the malady.

Hi-tech alarm to protect Balaji jewels
The precious ornaments of Lord Sri Venkateswara of Tirumala will soon get Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) protection from thefts and misappropriation. Under the system being readied by the city- based Electronics Corporation Of India Ltd, an alarm will be triggered when ornaments are removed from the temple premises.
The technology is so tamper proof that if someone attempts to detach the radio frequency identity tags from the jewellery, a loud siren will be heard. It will also alert the store administrator in case ornaments go missing. The ECIL will also give identification number for the ornaments, which will be labelled by a security hologram. Further, it will prepare a database containing description of the ornaments and information of donors and their addresses.
After gold dollars went missing from the treasury at Tirumala, the government had appointed the Justice M. Jagannadha Rao commission to recommend ways to protect the jewellery at the temples.
The commission, which examined steps taken by the TTD for the security of jewellery and valuables, suggested foolproof measures to prevent recurrence of theft.

Hyderabad, Aug. 27: The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Thursday rejected the contention of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams executive officer that he could not blame the state government or the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams for not conducting annual audit of temples under it.
The court directed the TTD to complete to verification and audit of assets in the state by the end of October 31 and verification of assets in other parts of the country by November 30.
Mr I.Y.R. Krishna Rao, the EO of the TTD, submitted to the court that the TTD was prepared to submit a master list as directed by the High Court.
However, he added that since he was being paid by the TTD and the state government he could not hold them responsible for not conducting audit. He urged the court to modify its order to seek answers straight from the TTD executive board and the endowments department.
However, a division bench comprising Justice Goda Raghuram and Justice Ramesh Ranganathan rejected his contention and said he could be more assertive as he was protected by the Constitution by virtue of his position as an IAS officer.

‘Kareri Isti’ yagam at Tirumala
TTD management is conducting five day ‘Kareri Isti’ yagam propitiating the rain god to bail out the country, which is reeling under drought conditions. The yagam will be conducted at the TTDs ‘Parveti Mandapam’ located in the middle of Tirumala forest. The five day yagam will commence from August 19. Vedic pundits will perform the yagam.

‘Gokulastami’ on August 14
The ‘Gokulastami’ festival and ‘Asthanam’ will be observed at the hill temple of Lord Venkateswara, Tirumala, on August 14 followed by ‘Utlotsavam’ the next day.
In connection with the ‘Gokulastami’, the temple authorities will conduct ‘Ekantha Thirumanjanam’ to the deity of Lord Ugra Srinivasa along with his two divine consorts and Lord Sri Krishna at ‘bangaru vakili’ between 8.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. followed by ‘Prabandha Sathmohra’, ‘Purana Pravachanam’ and ‘Asthanam’. Special rituals will be performed on August 15 in connection with the ‘Utlotsavam’ inside the main temple. The temple management has partially dispensed with the daily rituals inside the temple to facilitate the celebration of the colourful festival.

Massive complex for pilgrims in Tirupati Civic Scan
Yet another massive complex is coming up next to the Govindaraja Pushkarini in the heart of the city to house the pilgrims visiting Tirumala.
‘Vishnu Nivasam’, the seven-storeyed pilgrim amenities complex being constructed by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) just opposite the railway station mainly targets the devotees alighting at the station. While ‘Srinivasam’ complex constructed six years back with 600 rooms was the first success story, this complex is all set to script a similar one by meeting the boarding requirements of a major chunk of visitors.
Huge dormitory
The imposing edifice on a plinth area of 5 lakh sq.ft is coming up at the site where the Tirumala bus stand and the almost-century-old TTD’s first choultry stood earlier.
The new complex has a whopping 420 rooms in its third, fourth, fifth and sixth floors, while the cellar portion has a parking lot to accommodate 160 cars. “A huge dormitory with 24 halls is coming up on the second floor, which can provide accommodation to 500 to 600 people and is mainly targeted at devotee groups and bhajan troupes arriving here from across the south, especially on foot,” the TTD’s Chief Engineer V.S.B. Koteswara Rao told The Hindu. He felt that the structure will add yet another feather in the cap of the Devasthanams’ engineering wing. The complex will have an in-house bus station with ten platforms to meet the travel needs of the visitors. APSRTC will operate services directly to Tirumala. The first floor will be the nerve centre of activity, with canteen, dispensary, ATMs, publications stall, RTC reservation counters and TTD seva counters.
The railway authorities may consider setting up a reservation counter as an ‘add-on’ facility here. Similarly, the foot over-bridge proposed long back to connect the railway station with this complex has remained a non-starter. If realised, it will ferry the passengers directly, thus avoiding spillover of crowd on to the roads.

Will TTD restrict VIP darshan?
After the chief minister's recent directive to the TTD mandarins, the question doing the rounds atop the seven hills is: Will the
richest religious corporate in the world restrict `free access' of VIPs to the `Lord of Riches'?
Sources said everybody is expecting the temple management to wipe off its `pro-rich' image and be more pilgrim-friendly by bringing in the requisite changes in the existing VIP protocol darshan. "With Y S Rajasekhara Reddy himself asking the TTD to check the protocol VIP list, it's high time the TTD implemented the rule for the overall benefit of common pilgrims," an analyst said.
A temple official said there will not be any problem if the protocol VIPs and non-protocol VIPs follow the directive. "Sometimes they come along with an entourage of not less than 100 members, especially during peak days, putting us as well as the common pilgrims to severe hardships," he said.
The list of protocol VIPs includes president, vice-president, prime minister, governors, chief ministers, former presidents, former vice-presidents, ex-PMs, deputy PM, chief justice of India, Lok Sabha Speaker, Union ministers and deputy chairman of the planning commission.
Apart from them, judges of Supreme Court, minister in charge of endowments, former governors, ex-CMs, Speaker and deputy Speaker of the state legislative assembly, chairman and deputy chairman of legislative council and chief justice of AP High Court also form part of the protocol list.
"The problems of common pilgrims can be overcome only when the VIP list is revised and pruned. But it is not an easy task as TTD either directly or indirectly is dependent on various departments for legal, social and economic factors for the overall development of the temple," a former TTD EO said.
Interestingly, when top corporate heads and industry barons come calling to Lord Venkateswara, all rules go for a toss since the TTD mandarins cannot `displease' them, sources said. "Whenever Kingfisher head honcho Vijay Mallya visits the temple, he is accompanied by nearly 50 others. The TTD goes out of its way to provide darshan to him, stalling the general darshan for common pilgrims though he is not a protocol VIP," B V Prabhakar, a regular devotee from Chennai, said.
"TTD would be hit as many development works belonging to the temple either directly or indirectly are dependent on these big shots, whether they are protocol or non-protocol," a senior official of TTD reasoned.
When contacted, TTD executive officer I Yasodha Rama Krishna Rao said that the temple management is working out ways and means to bring about amendments in the VIP protocol list.
"In a month or two we will definitely bring amendments in the darshan system which should ease the waiting period of common pilgrims," he added.

‘Pavithrotsavam’ gets under way
The three day annual ‘pavithrotsavam’ began at the hill shrine of Lord Venkateswara on Saturday.
The celestial ‘Snapana Thirumanjanam’ was performed to the processional deities of Lord Malayappa swamy and his two consorts at the Sampangi Prakaram inside the main temple. Later the deities were adorned with the sacred garlands, which were made of silk threads.
The main intention behind performing the holy ritual is to seek pardon for the sins, commissions and omissions being committed knowingly or unknowingly during the performance of various rituals in the temple. As a prelude to the festival, ‘Ankurarpanam’ was performed on Friday evening.

Multi-storeyed car park at Tirumala likely
The TTD Executive Officer I.Y.R. Krishna Rao on Friday instructed the Engineering Department to study the feasibility of constructing a multi-storeyed car parking in the vicinity of the Vaikuntam queue complex for the benefit of the visiting devotees.
Mr. Rao, who inspected several areas at Tirumala felt it mandatory to construct a multi-storeyed car parking complex that can house atleast 2,000 vehicles, besides a massive pilgrim amenities complex in the area with a capacity to accommodate over 10,000 pilgrims.
Mr. Rao, with an aim to provide better amenities for the pilgrims is undertaking periodical inspections to identify areas that need immediate attention .
As part of this exercise he visited the Sapthagiri Choultries and instructed the officials concerned to ensure hygiene in and around the choultries.
The engineering officials were also instructed to provide a leak-proof roof at the Akhanda Hari Nama Sankeertana Mandapam.
Earlier Rao held a meeting with the heads of various departments in the TTD and also reviewed the steps taken regarding the suggestions and complaints from devotees during the Dial TTD EO programme which is organised on first Friday of every month.
Prominent among others who were present include the Tirumala based Special Officer A.V.Dharma Reddy, CVSO P.V.S. Ramakrishna and Superintendent Engineer Ramachandra Reddy.

But, what about a man biting another man? Isn’t it news? Well, it is. In Tirupati, a policeman allegedly bit the finger of a journalist on Sunday. The reporter was covering the wedding function of film heroine Meena with a Bangalore-based engineer. Naturally, it is a big media event and scores of media persons assembled at the Arya Vysya Sangham hall, where the wedding took place.
And more naturally, policemen had to make arrangements to prevent any untoward incident at the wedding of a celebrity. And most naturally, they had to have a clash with media persons. In the process, one cop reportedly bit the finger of a scribe, who was questioning the highhanded behaviour of the police. The scribes complained the matter to the higher authorities seeking justice!
