Early detection saves lives: Anil Kapoor

Anil Kapoor and his family have gone through some trying times in the last few years. He has lost a close family friend to breast cancer, while another member has recently recovered after being afflicted.

Both women were extremely close to his daughter Sonam, who was devastated when she heard about the diagnosis. Here, the actor talks about the traumatic events and why it's important to spread the message and create awareness of breast cancer.

"Family means everything to me. I am fortunate to be surrounded by three beautiful, independent and intelligent women - my wife Sunita and my two daughters Sonam and Rhea. Nothing is more important to me than their health and well-being. Even if they come down with a cold or the flu it affects my state of mind. I make it a priority to ensure that we as a family do everything in our capacity to lead a healthy life.

Discussions about health and well-being, exercise and nutrition are common in my household. One piece of information that Sonam recently shared with me caught my attention. She informed me that one in every 16 women in India is diagnosed with breast cancer today. I was alarmed by this statistic, not realising how rampant this disease is. I also learnt that the old adage 'prevention is better than cure' is apt for this disease - early detection is key to fighting breast cancer.

Two of my close relatives have battled with breast cancer in the past. One was detected early and the recovery was full; unfortunately in the other case, the detection happened too late and we lost her. Losing this close family member was very traumatic for all of us, especially Sonam, because she was extremely attached to her. This has really made her even more passionate about the cause. I feel that we make so much effort to plan our financial future but don't do the same for our well-being. We only visit the doctor when something is wrong. This has to change. It is a shame to lose a loved one simply because one sought medical intervention too late. Early detection saves lives.

I feel all men should be made aware of breast cancer and the simple steps they can take to ensure the future well-being of the women in their family - the most important one being regular check ups. I am thankful to Sonam, Rhea and Sunita for making me aware of this issue. My life is so complete because of them.
