Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam (PR) had a mixed weekend, with its founder-member, Dr P. Mitra, announcing his resignation and the Election Commission (EC) recognising it as a state party. Dr Mitra told the media that he was leaving the party because of ideological differences. “My relations with Chiranjeevi will be the same. I have nothing against him,” he said. “As I have no role to play in the party at this moment, I have decided to leave.”
Dr Mitra had wanted to quit during the elections, but was persuaded to stay on, But there was cheer round the corner, with the EC recognising the PR as a state party based on its performance in the elections. The EC secretary, Mr K.F. Wilfred, said in a statement that the party can now choose its own symbol.
