Addressing a gathering of students and Telangana supporters at the Arts College on Osmania University campus on Thursday, the TRS floor leader in the Assembly, Etela Rajendar, called upon students to continue the agitation. He said it was only the first step of the dream and the movement shouldn’t lose steam till the G.O. creating Telangana was issued.
He said there is a need to continuously put pressure on the Central Government and the role of students was important in this. Referring to the resignations of MLAs and MPs of different political parties opposing the Centre’s decision, Mr. Rajendar said such tactics were only meant to mount pressure on the Centre to deny Telangana state.
Savouring the moment Arts College became a rallying point for the celebrations of Telangana supporters as different groups gathered at the historic building to savour the announcement coming from New Delhi.
Drum-beating activists of various cultural groups welcomed the students, political party leaders, lawyers, teachers and activists of different parties who came in hordes. The roar of ‘Jai Telangana’ pierced through the ears every now and then reflecting the enthusiasm of the crowd gathered. The numbers swelled into thousands as rallies from different parts of the city culminated at Arts College where homage was paid to the people who sacrificed their lives for a separate Telangana.
Interestingly, every group wanted to steal the show and the cohesiveness was evidently lacking.
The day started with a meeting held by ABVP where the BJP floor in the Assembly G. Kishen Reddy and former Union Minister Ch. Vidyasagar Rao participated.
Martyrs’ stupa The meeting of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of students in the afternoon literally turned into a platform of show of solidarity for every group reaching Arts College. A martyrs stupa was erected on the stage with the photographs of people who committed suicide during the last 10 days. Homage was paid to the martyrs by the participants as cultural groups enthused the crowds with songs highlighting the sacrifices.
The whole atmosphere got charged up as the TRS MLAs Etala Rajender, Nallala Odelu and K. Vidyasagar Rao turned up at the meeting.
Students carried them on their shoulders from the car to the stage amidst slogans of Jai Telangana.
Meanwhile, the JAC lined-up a slew of speakers including a few from the Congress party to celebrate the achievement.
Noted educationist Chukka Ramaiah, while congratulating the students, also cautioned them that they should not rest on their laurels and continue to agitate till the process of separation is completed fully.
While condemning the slew of resignations of MPs, MLAs and MLCs from various political parties, Mr. Ramaiah alleged that detractors of Telangana statehood are working overtime to prevent Hyderabad from becoming the capital of Telangana state.
Congress Nizamabad MP Madhu Yashki Goud, who addressed the gathering, called upon the students to continue the fight.
“We need to chalk out a joint action plan to keep up the fight. We have to work together and continue our fight,” he said.
