Several Congress leaders feel that the Centre’s decision to form Telangana is part of a long-term strategy chalked out by the AICC general secretary, Mr Rahul Gandhi, who wants to gain hold over Uttar Pradesh by dividing it into Bundelkhand and Purvanchal.
The Centre’s decision on Telangana would bring life to agitations in the two regions of UP and would aid Mr Gandhi’s political strategies.
According to the Guntur MP, Mr Rayapati Sambasiva Rao, the Congress president, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, also told the MPs from Andhra and Rayalaseema that a conscious decision was taken in view of the national perspective and the long-term interests of the party.
And right on cue, the Samjawadi party on Thursday launched a direct attack on Mr Gandhi for the division of Andhra Pradesh.
The senior SP MP, Mr Rewati Rawan Singh, said that “nothing in Congress happens without the consent of Rahul Gandhi. Nothing happens without his will.” He added that Mr Gandhi’s support for the Bundelkhand state in Uttar Pradesh would be a disaster as it will completely divide the state.
He also pointed out the raging demand for Harit Pradesh and said that the decision to create Telangana has “opened a Pandora’s box.”
Sources also said that though the Chief Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, rushed to New Delhi he was not taken into confidence and was not even involved in the several rounds of talks held by the core committee.
In fact, the Chief Minister told the high command that he was in favour of a united state. But the high command went ahead with its decision.
The Chief Minister was so upset with the central leadership keeping him in dark that he politely turned down the suggestion of the core committee to offer lemon juice to the fasting Mr Chandrasekhar Rao.
Pro-Telangana leaders, however, attribute the separate state decision to Mrs Gandhi’s commitment to fulfil the promise made in 2004.
