I’m proud of my son: Srikanth’s father

Unmindful of the slogans of ‘long live Telangana martyr Srikanth’, Shankaramma was crying inconsolably. The 45-year-old woman slipped into deep shock when doctors of DRDO-Apollo hospital announced on Thursday night that her eldest son Srikanth, who set himself on fire four days ago, protesting TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s arrest, was no more. Her husband, Venkata Chary, is a carpenter hailing from Podichedu village of Mothkur mandal in Nalgonda district. While their other son completed some vocation course and is in search of a job, the parents banked all hopes on Srikanth since he completed physiotherapy course. Srikanth worked with a corporate hospital for few days but quit the job telling his parents that he wanted to take part in Telangana agitation by joining TRS. Whenever he came to the village, he used to carry literature relating to Telangna and always speak about the subject.

Venkata Chary too was dejected. Hugging relatives and others who came to call on him, he said he was sad but proud that his son had sacrificed his life for the cause of Telangana. “Nothing can compensate my son’s death. But he died for a cause he strongly believed in,” he remarked.
