Film stars dominated the show!
Indian Premiere League's Seventh addition is ruled by the teams that are owned by Bollywood stars. Priety Zinta's team King XI Punjab has been in top form this season. The new look team is all set to fulfill the long awaited dream of Preity. She has patiently waited for six seasons hoping for a miracle to shine upon her team.
Preity Zinta made some smart buys at the auction and they have paid off big time. All that her team needs now is to continue the good show for another two matches to have hands on the trophy. Shahrukh Khan's Kolkata Knight Riders made it to the top two in dramatic fashion. KKR already won the trophy once in the past. King Khan is hoping his team to bag the trophy for the second time.
Another Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty co owns Rajasthan Royals team. Her team was knocked out by Mumbai Indians in an unbelievable style. Otherwise all the teams that co owned by Bollywood stars would have made it to the play offs. Let's see if Priety and SRK teams could go all the way beating the star studded Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians out.

IPL is fixed: Investigators
Shocking I-T report blows lid off murky deals among players, organisers. Foreign captain, big guns of Indian cricket threw matches. Team owners and star players are influencing youngsters; phone trails being analysed
The Indian Premier League (IPL) matches you have been keenly following for most of the past two months have been fixed, according to an income tax (I-T) report. Worse still, by none other than your cricketing idols.

Shockingly, those involved in fixing the matches are superstars of Indian cricket and even an international player, who is a captain of one of the teams, according to a top official in Delhi who is part of the I-T team investigating the alleged IPL scam. Some team owners too are allegedly involved.
Thankfully, the Big Three of Indian cricket -- Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid -- are clean and above this muck, the I-T investigator revealed.
The report (a copy of which is with MiD DAY) says, "During IPL, the match fixing and betting racket has scaled new heights."
Some seniors have allegedly been influencing juniors, often from their own regions, to fix matches. Probably for the first time in cricketing history, senior and junior cricketers playing in rival teams jointly fixed the outcome of matches, the official said. A clear pattern has supposedly emerged where a particular bowler has bowled easy deliveries and dropped catches, while his 'partner in crime' went on a scoring spree.
Investigating teams from I-T and the Enforcement Directorate are analysing phone records of some of the franchises after match-fixing speculations. Investigators are checking the phone records of several personalities who had access to VIP enclosures during IPL matches.
Modi connection
Not so tweet
Rajasthan Royals skipper, Shane Warne (40), tweeted on April 11 that followers could get £8 (Rs 550) free poker money if they signed up on an online gambling site, said reports in the Australian media.
Warne, whose Twitter site has more than 47,000 followers, also had a link to the site, reports said.
The tweet angered anti-gambling campaigner, Rev Tim Costello, who said children could be influenced.
One of the persons mentioned in the I-T report is Samir Thukral, who, according to the report, "has an opulent lifestyle despite having no apparent source of income" and "carries out the betting on behalf of Lalit Modi where insider information as well as outcome fixing are hinted at".
About the IPL chairman's involvement, the I-T report says, "Lalit Modi is apparently deeply embroiled in both generation of black money, money laundering, betting in cricket (match fixing of certain IPL matches)."
While the report says that Thukral "is a permanent fixture at all IPL tournament matches", he told MiD DAY that he had attended only one match this season.
In an e-mail, Thukral said, "I would like to state that Lalit Modi is an old friend from college days and I have known him for over 30 years. However, I have no business or financial dealings with him or the IPL of any sort.
Also, in the last eight to 10 months I have only had the opportunity to meet him once. I strongly refute the allegations which are being made against me in the news; there is no truth in any of them."
Bookie says
A bookie, who did not wish to be named, revealed, "The stakes are so high that all operators want a share of the income. The value of IPL is well over Rs 6,000 crore and betting during each match is estimated at around Rs 500 crore. Some members of the underworld are believed to have secretly invested in the teams."
Angry teams react
Some of the franchisees reacted angrily to the allegations of match fixing in IPL.
A furious Joy Bhattacharya, CEO of Kolkata Knight Riders, called the report "ridiculous" and added that all the players in his team had been working hard to win every match.
Raghu Iyer, chief marketing officer of Rajasthan Royals, called the allegations "absolutely baseless".
IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi and CEO Sundar Raman were not available for comment.
Asked about the I-T probe, Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari said, "I do not want to comment on IPL."

From a humble tweet to cupboards full of tumbling skeletons, here's how cricket's biggest money-spinner grabbed headlines in 2010
It started with a simple tweet by IPL head honcho Lalit Modi, who casually questioned the inteference of Union Minister Shashi Tharoor in the creation of a new IPL team for Kochi. Tharoor promptly denied all allegations, and hit back at Modi, accusing him of pressurising the winning consortium to abandon their bid for the Kerala outfit.
The media soon got word of a possible cover-up. While Vivek Venugopal, co-owner of the Kochi franchise promised that his consortium would reveal all details of team owners to the Board of Control for Cricket in India, there was no official word for a while about who the other owners were.
On April 13, with the public showdown between Lalit Modi and Shashi Tharoor over the Kochi team's stake-holding structure snowballing into a major controversy, the BCCI decided to convene a meeting of the IPL Governing Council within 10 days to take a decision on the episode.
Meanwhile, as reports of Rendezvous Sports World serving a legal notice to Modi caused a ripple in Indian cricket administration, Modi maintained there was a question mark over the owners of IPL Kochi franchisee.
Things got murkier after Tharoor's aide let slip that there was a death threat to the Minister, something Modi refused to comment on. In a new twist to the sorry saga, the Kochi franchise then alleged that Lalit Modi was targeting the new team under pressure from Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi
Embattled Tharoor said he would not oblige critics by resigning as he had done no wrong in the billowing controversy. By this point, even Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was forced to promise, from Washington, a full inquiry into the matter. Lalit Modi's future also began to look a little shaky
The Income Tax decided to look into the matter on April 16. They picked up documents related to IPL's franchisee bidding procedure from Lalit Modi's office and grilled him for seven hours. On April 18, business tycoon Vijay Mallya, owner of the Royal Challenger Bangalore IPL team, admitted that his step daughter Laila Mahmood was the 'mystery woman' who exited Modi's office just before the Income Tax probe
Modi continued to refute allegations of betting and money laundering in the event, saying the charges were "nonsense" and aimed at discrediting the tournament. By this time, on April 20, he was summoned by for a meeting with former BCCI chief Sharad Pawar.
As Pawar's daughter Supriya Sule was dragged into the controversy, Lalit Modi's stint with the BCCI was rumoured to be over.
The story continues. One thing is for sure though. A major casualty of the controversies surrounding the high-flying IPL commissioner is going to be the party culture of the high-profile Twenty20 league. Also, the dark clouds surrounding the game will not cast a shadow on the glittering awards ceremony.

Tharoor to speak in Lok Sabha on IPL row at noon
Under fire for his alleged involvement in the Kochi franchise of the Indian Premier League (IPL), minister of state for external affairs Shashi Tharoor will give a statement on the issue in the Lok Sabha on Friday.
"The members are raising a particular issue. I assure them that the concerned minister will be asked to make the statement after the question hour. He will give his personal explanation in the house during the zero hour (which will begin after 12)," parliamentary affairs minister Pawan Kumar Bansal told the Lok Sabha amid noisy protests from Left and BJP MPs.
As the Lok Sabha resumed at 11 am on Friday, a day after opposition parties cornered the government on the April 6 Dantewada massacre, opposition members rose to demand an explanation from Tharoor who is alleged to have misused his official position to help his friend Sunanda Pushkar get sweat equity worth Rs 70 crore in the IPL Kochi franchise.
The protesting MPs were demanding suspension of the question hour. Speaker Meira Kumar first tried to let the question hour continue as health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad was replying to questions.
However, the MPs continued with their protests, forcing the speaker to adjourn the house till 12 noon.

IPL is open to scrutiny by any agency: Lalit Modi
Offering IPL to any scrutiny by any agency, its commissioner Lalit Modi on Friday said that the Income Tax authorities had sought details relating to two new franchises Kochi and Pune and have gone "satisfied".
Debunking reports that he was quizzed by IT officials for seven to eight hours last evening, Modi said in a telephonic interview "they wanted the name of bidders, the process of bidding and the details of the bids for the two new teams... we have complied with everything and they have gone back satisfied about the entire process."
Income Tax teams had visited IPL offices in BCCI at Wankhade Stadium as also Lalit Modi's offices in Worli, Mumbai, in the face of a controversy relating to the ownership of the Kochi franchisee after a successful bid of Rs 1,533 crore.
On the inquiry part, Modi said, "I was questioned for only 15-20 minutes and they wanted to know formally IPL's position on the bidders and the related issues. We explained it to them. They wanted all the relevant papers and to collect those relevant papers from 2-3 different places, it took some time."
The former BCCI chief and agriculture minister Sharad Pawar had come out openly in support of Modi last evening saying "there in nothing wrong in disclosing the names of the stakeholders (of IPL franchisees) to the public."
His statement came amidst controversy over Modi questioning the ownership of the consortium that won the Kochi franchisee. It was alleged that minister of state for external affairs Shashi Tharoor had a hand in his close friend Sunanda Pushkar getting free equity worth Rs 70 crore in IPL Kochi, a charge vehemently denied by the minister.
Pawar had also defended Tharoor saying his ministerial colleague's "basic interest" was to bring cricket to the centrestage in Kerala and provide opportunities to players from the state.
Asked if IT officials had sought details about other teams that were bid three years ago, Modi said "they had asked few questions on it and after they were told that information is in public domain, they did not seek further details."
During the I-T inquiry at the IPL office here, Ratnakar Shetty, Chief Administrative Officer of the BCCI, which owns the T-20 body, was also present at the building, the sources said.
Shetty and I-T officials, however, refused to entertain reporters' queries.
Immediately after the I-T officials visited the offices of BCCI-IPL, Modi rushed to the headquarters to meet them. Thereafter, Modi and I-T officials moved to Nirlon House in Worli area where the IPL commissioner's offices are located.
Modi said the I-T team's visit was only an inquiry and not a raid. He also said the IPL will "fully cooperate" in the inquiry.
The sources said the I-T department has created a special cell here to keep a tab on all income generated by the IPL and maintained that the probe has been initiated to find out if there is any illegal flow of funds or whether any black money is being pumped into the sporting extravaganza including from foreign shores.
Giving another twist to the IPL saga, Kochi franchise spokesman and former MP Satyajit Gaekwad had alleged that the IPL boss was acting under pressure from Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, who after failing to secure a franchise for the state-based Adani Group, wanted the Kochi franchise to shift base to Ahmedabad.
Gaekwad, however, later retracted his statement. Meanwhile, sources said the BCCI will discuss the issue in its working committee meeting on April 24.
Amid reports that BCCI president Shashank Manohar is likely to be appointed co-chairman of IPL, the former chief of the board and Union minister Sharad Pawar has virtually ruled out such a possibility.
"Since Manohar is BCCI president, it would not be proper to jointly head the IPL, which is a sub-committee of the apex cricketing body in the country," Pawar said.

Yuvraj is valuable: Preity
Preity Zinta, co-owner of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kings XI Punjab, Thursday said her team has "strong will" and "enough fire" to win the third edition of the T-20 tournament that begins Friday.
"We have a very talented side and we have strong will to go and win the tournament," Preity said here. "Last time we had seven injured players which no one could help. I believe an IPL team is judged by the strength of strong domestic players and not the international players. We have three-four new domestic players and I hope they will strengthen the base," she added.
Preity was here to participate in a health event organised by UNAIDS. Yuvraj Singh led Preity's team in first two editions of IPL matches but this time Sri Lankan all-rounder Kumar Sangakkara is set to lead Kings XI Punjab. Asked about the change in captaincy, she said: "Many IPL teams are re-shuffling in batting, bowling and other departments. Sangakkara is a talented man (to lead the team). But Yuvraj is our most valuable player. In our team, I want to say, there is no place for 'I'. It's 'we'. We as a team will win or lose."
Commenting on important bowler Brett Lee's injury, Preity said: "He is recovering." She, however, said that they are keeping their fingers crossed and "praying" for a great show in the tournament.

Mandira Bedi does a double in IPL 3
Mandira Bedi, the glamorous face of Indian cricket is all set to do a unique double. Mandira would present the matches live to the UK viewers and also be seen on MAX in a different capacity, the official channel for IPL in India.
Says a visibly elated Mandira, “it is difficult to stay away from IPL. The love and affection you receive from the millions is beyond anybody’s imagination. And this time it is a double whammy for me. Not only will I stay connected to my audience on MAX through IPL specials, but also I will be presenting the matches live to over 20 million viewers on ITV”.
ITV, the oldest television network in the United Kingdom, has been awarded the exclusive broadcasting rights for DLF-IPL III on its free-to-air service. UK is the biggest market for cricket outside India and the IPLs is making a concerted effort to reach them through ITV. Interestingly, it is for the first time since 1970s that ITV will show live cricket.

Says a visibly elated Mandira, “it is difficult to stay away from IPL. The love and affection you receive from the millions is beyond anybody’s imagination. And this time it is a double whammy for me. Not only will I stay connected to my audience on MAX through IPL specials, but also I will be presenting the matches live to over 20 million viewers on ITV”.
ITV, the oldest television network in the United Kingdom, has been awarded the exclusive broadcasting rights for DLF-IPL III on its free-to-air service. UK is the biggest market for cricket outside India and the IPLs is making a concerted effort to reach them through ITV. Interestingly, it is for the first time since 1970s that ITV will show live cricket.

PIL against power to IPL
A petition was moved in the Supreme Court on Tuesday challenging the organising of IPL night matches on various counts like enhanced security threats at late hours and use of “huge amount” of electricity on a sports event, which is purely a “private commercial” venture.
The petition was filed by Kolkata-based Gantantrik Nagarik Samity and two individuals — Mr Subhas Datta and Mr Subhash Chandra Basu — making the Union ministries of home, sports, power, environment, BCCI, the IPL chairman, Mr Lalit Modi, and the states where the matches are scheduled as respondents.
“The probability of terror attacks is more at night besides difficulty in security arrangements after dusk,” the petition stated.
It stated that though the IPL organiser is a non-state body, the government will be spending a huge amount for security and electricity for the night games.
The petitioner said all the night matches should be banned and the games played only during the day.
The petitioners sought direction to the BCCI and IPL committee to compensate the states for providing electricity and other facilities from the funds generated from the event.

'IPL will divert Telangana movement'
The much-hyped Indian Premier League cricket tournament still continues to face the ire of Telangana activists, despite an assurance from the Telangana Rashtra Samithi and its sponsored outfit Joint Action Committee.
Apparently realising that the Deccan Chargers management had “bribed” the TRS leadership to ensure that there is no disruption to the IPL matches in Hyderabad, the Telangana students under the banner of the Telangana Research Scholars’ Forum threatened that they would not allow any IPL matches to be held in Hyderabad.
“The matches will only divert the attention of the people from Telangana movement to cricket. The people of Telangana are worried about the separate state demand and not the cricket matches,” the forum leader said.
The Telangana activists further said the Hyderabad Cricket Association was turning a blind eye towards Telangana players and was only encouraging Andhra players and children of businessmen. What is worse, crores of rupees was being looted from Telangana in the name of betting, they alleged.

IPL match: Telangana JAC to write to Lalit Modi
The all-party Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) will write to Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Lalit Modi to assure him that there would not be any trouble from its side if the inaugural match of the third edition of IPL which was scheduled to be played in Hyderabad was gone ahead.
Amidst IPL’s reported decision to shift the venue of the match from Hyderabad to Mumbai in view of the turmoil in the State capital on account of separate Telangana agitation, the joint secretary of Hyderabad Cricket Association Venkat and another official on Monday called on JAC convenor C. Kodandaram to seek the latter’s intervention in a bid to see that the match was held here. Mr. Kodandaram told The Hindu that he promised to them that he would write to Mr. Modi on Tuesday to reconsider the decision.
