Puneeth Rajkumar in Vedalam remake

Last year's Tamil blockbuster Vedalam, starring Ajith Kumar, is all set to be remade in Kannada with Puneeth Rajkumar. Mirror has learnt from reliable sources that producer AM Rathnam, who had bankrolled the original, will make his Kannada debut with this project which will be made on a lavish budget. Nanda Kishore of Victory and Ranna fame will direct this project, but only after he completes shooting for his next outing Tiger, and the yetuntitled remake of Hindi hit OMG: Oh My God. Puneeth has already starred in remakes such as Pandugadu, Dookudu and Naadodigal among others. "Rathnam and Puneeth have been in talks over the last few months. The project is almost finalised and as soon as the producer returns from his Sabrimala trip, an official announcement can be expected. The rest of the cast and crew are yet to be finalised," a source told Mirror adding that the producer plans to hire a writer to make changes to the script to suit the local sensibilities. The project, according to the source, may go on the floors towards the end of 2016 or early 2017.

 "Puneeth already has two projects in his kitty. Hence, he can't start work on the project immediately and will have to wait for a minimum of six months before he could even think of starting work on it," the source added. Vedalam, in which Ajith played a don, was one of the most successful films in Ajith's career. The film raked in over Rs100 crore at the box office and emerged as the biggest first-day grossing Tamil film of all time with a share of Rs15.5 crore. While the film was heavily panned by critics, Ajith's fans and the masses dug it, making it a glorious hit.

Kajal Aggarwal finally makes Kannada film debut

For a long time, Kannada filmmakers have been trying to get Kajal Aggarwal to debut in Sandalwood. Finally, she is making her debut, albeit only as a singer in Puneeth Rajkumar's Chakravyuha. "I have always wanted to sing. I like singing. I wouldn't say I sound like a nightingale, but I do love humming. I got this offer from my friends, namely composer SS Thaman, Puneeth and the film's producer Lohith. I thought, 'Why not begin the year by doing something new?' and here I am, singing for the first time in my life. It was not too hard to convince me. I'll see how people accept this before looking at singing more," says Kajal, adding that she hopes 2016 will be the year she finally debuts in Sandalwood. The song is a duet, for which Kajal will sing alongside Puneeth. The team of Chakravyuha, which includes actors Puneeth and Rachita Ram, is off to Portugal today to shoot for this song. "I'm extremely delighted that this will be the first Kannada film to be shot in Portugal. I have an interesting set of costumes for this track. I will wear gowns and ballerina-like short dresses, which our film's designer, Divya, has sourced from London. It is different compared to my looks in other songs so far. Of course, it will be glamorous. I am also thankful to the team, because I get to feature in a song that has been sung by an actress like Kajal," says Rachita.

Malgudi days are back, this time on stage

Celebrated storyteller RK Narayan's novel Swami and Friends, which, for generations together, stirred hearts with its ironic humour and tenderness about the struggles of ordinary people in pre-Independence India, is back again - this time in the form of a play. A Bengaluru-based performance company has crafted a stage adaptation of the 1935 novel, condensing the life and experiences of Swami, Mani and Rajam in a fictional town in Karnataka, in a 90-minute theatrical, slated to be showcased as part of an upcoming theatre festival in the city. Aruna Ganesh Ram, director of the play, says, "Through the play by the same name, we have tried to recreate the nostalgic charm of a bygone era within the ambit of the stage. The plot is majorly based on Swami and his escapades in Malgudi with his two close friends, Mani and Rajam, as well as his affection toward his grandmother. The essence of the play is very earthy and the storyline dovetails the ordinary concerns of people in those days, punctuated with the author's unpretentious and natural narrative technique. The dramatic piece, with its humorous undertone, has something to reconnect with for everyone." In sync with the theme, wooden cuboids are used as props on stage. "The mangrove happened to be the three friends' favourite hangout, while the Albert Mission School had a strong presence in their lives. Thus, wood has been used as a material, as it connotes warmth and strength," she adds. Thirteen-year-old Ishaan Pai, who plays the role of Swami, describes the portrayal as quite an experience. "Swami was known for his quirks and boyish innocence. He would apply the logic of arithmetic to real-life experiences. Shankar Nag's popular television series, Malgudi Days, and RK Narayan's book have both helped me to get into character," he says. For Kartik Iyer, who is Mani in the play, however, the book has been the constant source of reference. "The whole experience was very intense and overwhelming. Travelling back in time to portray the mannerisms of an adolescent in those days was a challenging task. Although Mani struggles with his own studies, he is protective about Swami. All the characters in the play have worked hard to maintain the humour and mirth of the plot." says the 25-year-old. Expressing her views on the stage adaption of the book, theatre personality Arundhati Nag, who was also a part of the TV series, says, "A lot of precision and imagination had gone into the making of Malgudi Days, and, of course, the series was mostly shot outdoors. The story focused on how the children dealt with adult footprints. Putting all that together on stage would be a challenge, but I am hoping it makes an interesting act." According to Manjunath Nayaker, who played the role of Swami in the 1987 TV series, any interpretation of the novel and its characters would be interesting and fun to watch. "It's been almost 30 years that the serial was first broadcast on TV, but the allurement of Malgudi has lived on. It's amazing how the quaint little village of Agumbe, with just three pathways then, was chiseled into a fictional land that remained etched in people's hearts and memories forever. It would be exalting to watch a play on Swami, Mani and Rajam," he sums up.

But what happens when he falls in love and realizes that he cannot woo her enough for a wedding as she's scared of commitment and relationships? Indrajit Lankesh, without doubt, is the one Kannada director who can serve exciting candyfloss fare that entices the urban Sandalwood audience. He knows how to package a film with style. And Luv U Alia is all glitz and glam. But, beneath the gloss there's an endearing story, which Indrajit succeeds to tell, almost convincingly. The best bit about the film is that the director has used an ensemble cast of many big names and familiar faces and each of them blends nearly seamlessly with the narrative. The tale is simple, when a relationship guru finally falls in love, he meets his biggest challenge for his girlfriend doesn't believe in marriage. Does he manage to restore her faith and find his own happy ending? The cinematography and music are the two big pluses of the film. The new pair of Chandan and Sangeita too are impressive. While Sangeita has a stunning presence and can emote well, Chandan surprises the audience, especially with his well-guarded secret avatar in the second half. He has scope for improvement in pivotal emotional scenes, though. V Ravichandaran and P Ravi Shankar are the two major pillars. While the latter is the best treat for the first half, the former reigns through the second halfs. Bhumika Chawla is pretty, but, considering she plays a dancer, you wonder if she is the right choice for the role or would someone else have justified that role. Though, her pairing with Ravichandaran is fresh. Sunny Leone is scorching hot in the Kamakshi song and you are left asking for more of her. Dhyan and Nikesha Patel look good, while one is left cringing at certain scenes involving Sadhu Kokila and Shakeela. Though, one must commend the filmmaker for effectively using a stellar ensemble almost justifiably. And the conversation with Sudeep is interesting. It gives fans an added bonus. The interview also adds to the message of modern day relationships and the effect it can have on lives, especially given the demands of professions that keep one busy 24/7. Kannada actor Arjun arrested for harassing wife

Kannada film actor Arjun was on Wednesday arrested for allegedly harassing his wife both physically and mentally for the past several months, police said.

Thirty four year-old Arjun, married to Latashri for the past 11 years and has two daughters, was arrested on a complaint from his wife, they said.

Arjun had been allegedly harassing his wife both physically and mentally for the past several months under the influence of alcohol and unable to bear his torture, she had been staying with her parents for the past three months.

On Tuesday night, Arjun came to his father-in-law's house allegedly in a drunken state and had a quarrel with the security guard, verbally abusing him and also Latashri.

The actor was produced before a local court and has been remanded to judicial custody.

The century hero Shivarajakumar has stated that he would buy the audio CD of ‘Jogaiah’ his 100th film on May 18. He urged the people to do so.

Shivarajakumar was reacting to the new system developed by ‘Shree Media’. The new system developed would track the actual downloader of songs with all the information. For the audio CD of ‘Jogaiah’ this system would be implemented. The audio is set for world wide release on May 18. There is tremendous effort from everyone says Shivarajakumar recalling the various schedules, locations of shoot etc.

It seems Bhat took inspiration from the song 'All Is Well'. But, nonetheless the song has been shot in different way. Hemanth's voice in this number is a treat to listen and Yogaraj supporting voice has blended well with his voice.

And also the album consists of instrumental pieces of 'Ninnaya Nalumeya', 'Lifeu Ishtene', 'Hudugaru Beku', 'Are Arey' and Pancharangi Haadugalu.

Overall
There are number of gems in the album, most notably being 'Life Isthene', Panchrangi Haadugalu' and 'Ninnaiya Nalumeya'. Go for it, this one is not to be missed as it has Mano Murthy coming up with one of his best soundtracks in recent times. Pancharangi delivers what it promised.

Prem's Jogayya to kick off on Super Star Shivanna's birthday

Hattrick hero Shivaraj Kumar’s 100th film Jogayya (Jogaiah), with hat trick director Prem is set to reveal the face of politics of the past and present in Karnataka which had strong links to the underworld. Both Prem and Shivaraj Kumar seem to have a soft spot for the subject of the underworld.

Puneet Rajkumar, Shivaraj Kumar’s younger brother had a recent release, Prithvi, which was about the politics regarding the mining activities in Bellary district of Karnataka. Shivaraj Kumar has earlier done films
on the underworld, like his movie Om (1995), which was directed by Upendra. Prem’s connection to the underworld subject is from his film Kariya in 2002. Finally, the duo came together in Jogi.

Now P Vasu has made the Part 2 of the film Aptamitra with the title Aaptharakshaka and released it. This film had late Vishnuvardhan. We met Vasu in Pulivesham sets, and asked about the success. Vasu replies, "We can see a film success in three ways. The first thing is that the people should like this film. The second thing is that we should be satisfied and the third thing is producers should be happy and satisfied. This film has won in all these three things. We have spent Rs 35 Lakhs for graphics alone. It is true that this film was really challenging for me. My mind was filled with the only thing that I should make this film a hit because Vishnuvardhan had passed away and it was his last film. Now I am planning to make this film in Tamil."

Did you screen the movie to Rajini sir?

"Yes... The film was screened for Rajini sir. He enjoyed this film. He was moved and emotional in the climax scenes. Right from the beginning when I started this film, he use to inquire how the film has come out. After seeing the success of this film, he appreciated me.”

"I am a person who will not look into the difference between senior or junior actors. I work equally with them. After making two films with the superstars, I am directing Puli Vesham now. Puli Vesham is not an ordinary story. This film has a story like my film Chinna Thambi. This film is about an innocent youth who journeys in village and city. How the city turns this youth’s life? Puli Vesham will narrate this youth to what extent he goes because of his affection and love. The village sequences were shot in Tenkasi. R K who is doing the lead role has intricately acted in this film. This film will escalate him. Two heroines are acting in this film. Srikanth Deva is composing music for this film."

Nana Patekar to dub his voice in Kannada

Bollywood actor Nana Patekar who is busy shooting for the upcoming movie Yaksha has said that he will dub his voice in Kannada. Star Vishnuvardhan cremated, thousands mourn

The 60-year-old actor died in Mysore, about 140 km from here, following a heart attack.

Vishnuvardhan is survived by his wife Bharathi and two daughters Chandana and Keerthi.

The Karnataka government had decided on a state funeral and Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa announced a grant of Rs.10 crore and two acres of land to build a memorial to the Kannada superstar.

More than 60,000 fans paid their last respects to the departed actor at the National College grounds where his body was brought. Earlier, the body was kept at his Jayanagar residence.

A big procession was taken from the National College grounds to the Abhiman Studios in Uttarahalli where the state government made elaborate arrangements for the funeral. The procession went through Hanumanthanagar, Banashankari, Padmanabhanagar, Channasandra and then to Uttarahalli.

There were incidents of stone pelting, looting of restaurants and malls, as the procession wended its way. Police vans were attacked and barricades were broken.

Vishnuvardhan's family members, who were part of the procession, had to appeal to the fans to maintain peace and allow them to proceed.
