Crazy Movie SVSC Review

SVSC is undoubtedly the most awaited movie of the season if not this year. This is the first true multi-starrer movie in Telugu cinema in last three decades. Mahesh Babu who is in sparkling form teamed up with ace performer Venkatesh in this film about Sibling bonding. What is it about? Peddodu (Venkatesh) and Chinnodu (Mahesh) are brothers who have diverse personalities. Peddodu doesn't settle down in life by doing some job and Chinnodu will be in job search. Peddodu not settling in any job is the biggest pressure on their family. Chinnodu tries to guide him but in vain. At a stage the relation between the brothers gets strained and how everything gets cleared is the final scene. Performances: Mahesh Babu is currently in a wonderful form especially with his comedy timing. His one liners in East Godavari accent are a treat. He has delivered yet another wonderful performance as chinnodu. He simply carries off the film on his shoulders and provides good entertainment in parts. If not for Mahesh this film would have been a letdown. Such is the impact of Mahesh on this movie. Venkatesh has been dominated by Mahesh in most of the scenes as Venkatesh played a serious role which is completely in contrast to that of Mahesh's. However Venky had his moments here and there where he comes up with trademark sentimental performance. Being a multistarrer one would expect Venkatesh to have a better role. Prakash Raj is very good in his role. He is very natural and so is Jayasudha. Anjali's character is over the top at times but she is good and lovely in the role. Samantha is alright. Rao Ramesh and Tanikella Bharani are fine. On the Technical Front: Songs are soothing and melodious. Background score is pleasant. Cinematography is cool. Editing could have been better. So many characters have been chopped off (RaviBabu, Raja Raveendra) without proper justification. Dialogues are good. Production values are commendable. Srinkanth Addala is a good director who has great script sense. His first film Kotha Bangaru Lokam has few very good scenes that prove this point. SVSC is not an exception. Srikanth has once again done a fabulous job in conceiving scenes. The best scene is on Prakash Raj in Badrachalam. However, the director ignored many essential elements to highlight the sibling bonding. His prime focus is only on the brotherhood and he didn't bother about other things which is not an intelligent move on the commercial front. Analysis: This movie starts off at its own pace and things start to move briskly once Mahesh and Venkatesh comes together on screen. There is no separate comedy in this film and that has been handled by Mahesh. First half is completely dedicated to create feel good factor and the director succeeds in doing so. Second half is where the real story has to start. But director only focused on brothers and their emotions. They go apart on few occasions and patches up later. This process repeats for two or three times and the movie ends. You will never realize that the film has gone into the climax part until the movie concludes. Narration is too flat and that is the biggest drawback. Mahesh and Venkatesh bonding scenes have come out well. Mahesh Babu's phone chat with Samantha is entertaining. Anjali character and Prakash Raj character could have been dealt better for more emotional impact. Mahesh Babu solely shouldered the movie from sinking with his excellent dialogues and performance. This film has few emotions that will appeal to family audience and females. People who have great bonding with their brothers too might get connected. We have to wait and see how masses embrace this movie.

Telugu lyricist Veturi passes away at 74

One of the doyens of Telugu film industry, lyric writer Dr Veturi Sundara Ramurthy, 74, died of a massive cardiac arrest at a private hospital here on Saturday night. He was admitted to the hospital two days ago and was kept in ICU.

Veturi was born on January 29, 1936 at Peda Kallepalli in Krishna district. While working as a journalist, Veturi became popular by writing songs for Dr K. Viswanath’s O Sita Katha, Siri Siri Muvva, Saptapadi, Swati Mutyam and Sagara Sangam. He penned hundreds of popular songs.

Veturi began his career as a journalist and worked for prominent dailies like Andhra Patrika and Andhra Prabha before becoming a lyricist. His songs varied from classical to folk and mass. He was also the second lyricist from the Telugu film industry to win the National Film Award for the Best Lyrics for the song ‘Raalipoye puvva neeku ragaalenduke’ from the movie Maathrudevobhava in the year 1994. But, he gave back the award since Telugu was not recognised as an ancient language. He also received the AP government’s Nandi award more than eight times.

As a writer, he won laurels for his book 'Sirikakolanu Chinnadi' from Gyanpith Awardee, late Dr Viswanatha Satyanarayana.

Veturi cherished his professional relationship with the national award winning Telugu film director, Dr. K. Viswanath, and renowned music composers, K.V. Mahadevan and Ilaiyaraaja.

Strange are the ways of few people in the industry and their style of making news. Now that the internet and the web media are emerging as the most powerful tool for publicity, they have begun to focus on that as well. Here is one such attempt made and ended up as a comedy show.

Apparently, a strong buzz began to make rounds in the industry that the website of hero Ram got hacked and this was turned into a sensation. However, on further probing, it was revealed that the site was down due to a server problem but it was one of Ram’s friend who kept a line in the famous facebook that the website got hacked.

He stated that the site has been hacked. Those who heard and read this laughed their heart out and wondered if Ram was a World Bank site or a defense site that it must be hacked. They termed it as a pure publicity stunt but maintained that it has not worked a least bit and instead became a joke.

It looks like Telugu filmmakers are pulling out all stops to make their big-budget extravaganzas huge money-spinners.Close on the heels of sexy starlets Charmme, Hansika and Deepika Padukone shaking their booties in item songs, it’s now the turn of other Bollywood hotties Shriya Saran, Anita Hasanandani and Mahek Chahal to gyrate with T-town superstars. Even T-town’s numero uno Anushka is joining the fray with a special number in Takita Takita. “Anushka has confirmed she’ll do a special song in our film,” said producer Bharat Thakur.
Meanwhile, Shriya’s making a comeback to Tollyland with a racy number with Pawan Kalyan in Komaram Puli. Another screen scorcher Anita is also bouncing back with a foot-tapping chartbuster in Kalaver King. “It’s a fascinating number and I really enjoyed dancing to it,” says Anita.

Debutant director Kiran, who had once declared he disliked clichéd item numbers, has now canned one with Nagarjuna and Mahek for Kedi. “I do not believe in this item number business, but we needed a special number in a sequence to carry the story forward. I saw some clippings of Mahek’s item number with Salman Khan in Wanted and felt she’d be apt,” he explains.

Even filmmaker Sekar Kammula seems to have joined the bandwagon. In his upcoming film, he’s roped in TV anchor Udaya Bhanu to do the honours. “I won’t call it an item number, it’s a nice dance number that’s relevant to the plot,” says Sekhar.

But do item songs really spin BO magic? “I don’t think so. The audience is unlikely to fall for such gimmicks. Only a strong storyline is the USP of any film,” says producer Chintalapudi Srinivas.

For a lot of filmmakers though, incorporating item songs seems to be a lucrative option, as they can use these to create some pre-release buzz. And for celebs, it’s a win-win situation all the way.

'I'm Not Womanizer': Prakash Raj

It is known news that the talented and versatile actor Prakash Raj has won the National Award for the best actor and recently he had been to Mumbai and was sharing his thoughts there. This is the first encounter for the Mumbaikars who has just seen him via his villain act in Wanted. Prakash said that the first is always special but one can never really get used to winning a National Award. Apparently, this happens to be his fourth National Award and this time he has got it in the best actor category for Priyadarshan’s Tamil film Kanchivaram.

He had earlier won the Award for best supporting actor in Iruvar. In Kanchivaram Prakash portrayed the role of a silk weaver named Vengadan and the story revolves around the lives of silk weavers in pre-Independence India.

Prakash has been the most sought after villains in the South and surprisingly the role that has fetched him the award is quite different from the roles that have fetched him the huge fan following.

Speaking about the preparation for the role, Prakash said that he goes with an empty and open mind when he takes up a film. At times, he could be a Communist in a certain generation oblivious of the issues in the society at that point of time. In Iruvar Prakash recalled how he had to understand the Dravidian culture to go into the character of the protagonist.

Throughout his career as the mainstream villain he has been exposed to a form of acting that stressed on loudness and mannerisms such as pitched decibel levels, protruding eyes etc which were the symbolisms of a villain down south. However, a chance to play certain off-beat roles is said to be relieving him from the routine tasks.

Prakash says that it is a human task to come out of it, and eventually your reflexes become used to it. He also says that such things tend to have an impact on the personal front and recalls the incident wherein his house in Bangalore is about 35 kilometers from the airport and whenever he had to catch a flight in the past, he sped through at over 150 kmph but now he feels driving at a 100 is also fine. In a way, even life acquires a balance he states. “The comfort of the so-called intense actor falls by the wayside very easily eventually. And surely, the transition was seen easily as Prakash came up with a rather subdued performance in ‘Kanchivaram’.

Meanwhile, the folks of Mumbai had their exposure to Prakash Raj’s brand of villainy has been in the film Wanted. He said that his approach to any role is touched with wit and added that it is almost as if he gets his own identity that way. That way, he also claims that it gives him that unique appeal among the audience as was evident in Wanted.

He also maintained that the film worked due to Prabhu Deva’s direction which took the film to a different league. Prakash quips that Prabhu Deva doesn’t direct but he choreographs his films. Soon, the actor will be seen in the mantle of a director for a Kannada film, and this is based on the relationship of a father and a daughter. The film happens to be the remake of the Telugu hit ‘Akasamantha’ and Prakash says that he found himself thinking once that ten years down the line if his daughter, who is 13 now, calls from Miami to say that she is set to marry someone from a completely different location and origin, then would he be able to accept it?

The film is about the fact that daughters grow up but fathers don’t he adds. Prakash says that his daughter is already aware that it is her father’s film and when he speaks to her casually about it, she has valuable inputs to offer. On the personal front, Prakash is used to be known as a confirmed family man, but ever since he has taken a divorce from wife Lalitha Kumari, sister of Disco Shanti, he is being branded as the ladies man. Prakash from his end is said to be quite delighted about it and says that it always works when someone is called a Ladies Man. “And it doesn’t mean I’m a womanizer”, he adds.

For now, this National Award Winner has got his hands and legs spread across various boats and given his mettle and talent, it must be said that he would emerge with some flying colors and make the south Indian film fraternity proud. Hearty congratulations Prakash Raj!!!

‘I don’t treat Naga Chaitanya like a star kid’

One of the Tamil film industry’s acclaimed directors, Gautam Vasudev Menon, will soon make a major switch in his career.
Gautam’s all set to enter Tollywood and is directing none other than Nagarjuna Jr, Naga Chaitanya. “I’ve always admired Nagarjuna, especially after Udayam (Shiva). And he likes my work, too. Nagarjuna even told me that if an interesting script comes up, he’d like his son to work with me,” explains Gautam.

The star son, he says, is just like his father. “We’ve just shot a couple of portions, but I can see the similarities. Not only does Naga Chaitanya look like his father, but also shows the same commitment to his work,” observes Gautam.

After having worked with established stars like Kamal Haasan and Suriya, how’s it to work with a newbie, and a star kid at that? “It’s not like I’m sitting on the edge of my seat because he’s a star kid. The effort on my part is the same as I’d put in when I work with Kamal sir or Suriya,” says Gautam.

The film, Naga Chaitanya’s second after his debut Josh, will be a remake of Gautam’s under-production Tamil flick, Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya. “It’s a feel-good love story and even though it doesn’t have the intensity of my previous films, it has its moments,” he says. Up next is another film with T-town superstar, Mahesh Babu. “His sister Manjula is producing it and it’ll be an action film with minimal dialogue,” he says.

The director has also teamed up with Oscar-winner AR Rahman to compose music for Vinnaithandi... and the Naga-starrer, after his spat with Harris Jayaraj. Does he miss working with Harris since he’s scored so many musical hits with him? “We still share a good equation. Harris was upset when I signed Rahman, but a director has to work with different people to keep his creativity alive. It’s not like Harris only works with me. If something comes up, I may work with him,” he says. Is Rahman affordable for film-makers like him after the Oscars? “He’s doing the film for the same fee we agreed on before he won the Oscars. Even if he charges a particular number, he deserves it,” says Gautam.
