Leave it to Imtiaz Ali to take a love story and present it in a manner that's completely different from run-of-the-mill Bollywood. Romance, under his creative vision, becomes a multi-layered, sensitively nuanced, monumental experience which has more to do with serenading your soulmate rather than a stereotypical marriage partner. With intelligent entertainers like Jab We Met, Love Aaj Kal and now Rockstar, he is evolving as a new age Yash Chopra. Love literally smoulders under his narrative, albeit in a completely modern idiom.
The highpoint of Rockstar is it's high tension, high-on-passion romance between two unlikely people: the completely low brow JJ who doesn't like his girls nice and clean and Heer (Nargis Fakhri), the uptown Stephenian who is all set to get married and settle down to sweet domesticity like all sweet girls do. Their relationship begins when both of them display a yen for the wicked and wild side of life and ignite the bohemian lifestyle by watching a show of Junglee Jawani in a seedy Delhi theatre. Before she gets nice and clean, Heer wants to play real dirty and JJ is more than willing to play the rule-breaker rogue with her. Great bonding, which gets even greater when the two realise it's time to kiss.... It is a love that transcends all social barriers, decimates all conventions and ends with a spiritual promise to meet in the field that exists beyond the concept of right and wrong (Rumi).
The fact that this romance unfolds on screen in the form of an explosive musical, capturing JJ's transmutation into Jordan, the edgy artist, makes the film an absolutely engaging affair. The vocals by Mohit Chauhan, the lyrics by Irshad Kamil and the music by AR Rahman are stuff classics are made of. Of course, Sadda Haq is the youth anthem by now, but there are so many beautiful tracks in the film, you get heady and stirred. Ranbir Kapoor displays an amazing growth chart as a performer as he gradually changes from a two-sizes-too-tight jean-clad upstart to a musical genius seared by a love that threatens to scorch his very soul. Nargis Fakhri too stands tall as the delectable Heer who sizzles on screen with her unconventional ways. But eventually, the film is a milestone in Ranbir Kapoor's career as an actor and a classic cut from the AR Rahman and Mohit Chauhan combo. Shammi Kapoor's presence as the classical artist enhances the gravitas of the film.

RA.One' is ambitious but flawed
Superhero film 'Ra.One' kicks off on an unusual note, as geeky tech-wiz dad Shekhar Subramaniam, played by Shah Rukh Khan, tries to become his young son's hero by creating the greatest video-game villain of all time. Named Ra.One in a not-so-subtle reference to The Ramayan's Lanka king, this super-villain almost immediately shows signs of breaking out of his virtual world to wreak havoc and destruction in the real one. Yet even as danger is lurking around the corner, Ra.One's creator Shekhar is distractedly working the dance floor with his wife.
To me, this moment sums up the entire experience of watching this ambitious but flawed superhero film - every time we're drawn into the simplistic but intriguing story of how Ra.One can only be vanquished by the game's superhero G.One (also played by Shah Rukh), director Anubhav Sinha feels the desperate need to inject a dance number or a comical sequence or a melodramatic interlude into the narrative. It's distracting from the superhero theme and more importantly, it makes the film clunky.
Once again, it's Shah Rukh Khan's sheer presence and energy, coupled with the narrative's don't-stop-to-think pace that makes 'Ra.One' watchable despite its flaws. This is an event movie, a spectacle, not really a film. It's 2 hours 35 minutes of special effects, action sequences and superficial romantic and emotional entanglements. You can see the ambition and imagination that the makers have poured into this movie, and while it thankfully doesn't succumb to the kind of lazy film-making we've seen recently in 'Rascals', 'Bodyguard', 'Ready' or the 'Golmaal' films. 'Ra.One' clearly suffers from a case of cramming in too much. Frankly, in all this, the superhero theme itself gets a bit lost - G.One's committment is towards protecting his family from Ra.One, not saving the world from evil. In the process, he's less of a superhero than Superman, Batman, Spiderman or even Krrish; G.One is more of a personal bodyguard with special powers.
Yet adhering to the unwritten superhero rule, G.One too is born out of tragedy, when his creator Shekhar is killed by Ra.One. Strangely, despite the heavy funeral song, we're barely convinced that wife and kid are grieving for Shekhar; so smoothly does G.One take his place in their lives. In their greed to make 'Ra.One' an entertainment extravaganza, the writers inject innuendoes that come off as crass - like the thesis the so-called feminist wife is doing on Indian swear words, or the scene in which a gay airport security guard is turned on by G.One's body piercings. The special appearances by Rajnikanth in a spoof of his own 'Robot', or a stylish early sequence featuring Sanjay Dutt and Priyanka Chopra only end up playing to the gallery. You're also left wondering why there's such an unhealthy obsession with the crotch, with so many scenes of grabbing, clutching, whacking or kicking it.
'Ra.One' heavily references films like 'Last Action Hero', 'The Matrix', 'Iron Man', 'X-Men' and 'Terminator-2', yet there is a certain thrill attached to the action sequences. A car chase through London's streets is rivaled by a local-train sequence in India where G.One leaps from one bogie to another. There's also the mind-boggling sight of the beautiful Gothic structure of Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus crumbling as the train ploughs right through it. These portions make up for the long-drawn climatic battle between Ra.One and G.One fought in a rather tacky virtual world.
The only real standout performance is by Shah Rukh Khan. His Aiyyo-speaking Shekhar Subramaniam is caricaturish but charming, while as G.One, he gives even his robotic video-game character a charismatic edge. Kareena Kapoor, as Shekhar's wife, provides the glamorous oomph factor as she shimmies to that fantastic number 'Chamak Challo', while Arjun Rampal makes a menacing Ra.One. However, too much screen time is wasted on the long-haired Armaan Verma who plays Shekhar's son, while Shahana Goswami playing a video game developer, inexplicably vanishes from the screen midway through the story.
What's missing from 'Ra.One' is a sure-footed director's touch. Anubhav Sinha fails to bring all the elements together, and while this superhero film has plenty sound and fury, it's sorely lacking slickness. I'm going with two and a half out of five for 'Ra.One'. Like the spaghetti and curds concoction that Shah Rukh digs into in an early scene, 'Ra.One' is clearly an acquired taste.

Love Breakups Zindagi Movie Review
Jai ( Zayed Khan) and Naina ( Dia Mirza) may have chosen their respective partners, but it doesn't take long before they realise they have made the wrong choice. A friend's extended Punjabi wedding makes it even more easy for the sparks to fly between the two and bring them close to each other while their partners are busy with their worldly affairs. Will it be breakup (with their old partners), love and zindagi ever after for the twosome? Wait and watch.
Movie Review: Wait and watch, yes. But what if the wait turns out to be endless and there isn't too much to watch since the plot keeps going round and round in repetitive circles about comings and goings between a bunch of confused people. Ironically, your patience is completely worn out by the first half, which believe it or not, is entirely used to shoot a Punjabi wedding sequence. Okay, DDLJ also used the entire second half to conduct its famous wedding, but remember, there was Shah Rukh, there was Kajol and there were lots of twists and turns in the story. Here, there's nothing, except the growing attraction between two couples: Dia Zayed and Cyrus Tisca.
If you somehow do manage to survive the first half, there's hope. The breakups part isn't as non-happening as the love portion. Both Dia and Zayed realise they are the true soulmates, even as Cyrus and Tisca spend hours on coffee and conversation. Quite interesting, their affair, specially as the two of them don't try to be typical Bollywood sweethearts.
Not quite the perfect debut from Sahil Sangha as director and Dia and Zayed as producers, Love Breakups Zindagi should be treated as a stepping stone to something more substantial -- and original -- from the threesome.

Madhur's next on gay love!
Where other filmmakers count the number of friends they’ve cultivated following the success of their movies, director Madhur Bhandarkar adds a few more enemies on his side each time his movie releases.
Now, with his film Heroine under way, is he worried that it might be his very own film frat that will go all hostile on him? “If it does, I won’t be surprised,” he says, “The corporate world vented its spleen on me, fashion and page three folks have still not forgiven me, and the beggars’ mafia went ballistic alleging that I’d eaten into their earnings. Receiving flak for my films has become a given.”
Madhur argues that too much is read into his films. “Films are meant solely to provide entertainment. There are no lessons to be learnt and and inferences to be drawn. Has anyone become dutiful and law abiding after seeing a film that espouses these very virtues? Films can do no more than influence fashion, decor, and hairstyle trends. No reason, then, why the microscopes should come out every time my film releases,” he complains.
About the movie, he says, “It is not about Meena Kumari and Madhubala. It is a contemporary film and, like my other slice-of-life offerings, this too reveals the underbelly of the industry and its well-kept secrets.”
And how is his Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji (DTBHJ) coming along? With a child-like enthusiasm, he says, “People are waiting to see if I can really deliver a comedy. But, humour is very much my forte. I’m a terrific mimic, and you can feel my funny bone. This will be a comedy where you’ll be required to bring your brains with you.”
Of his DTBHJ cast, Madhur says, “Shruti Haasan has turned in a remarkable performance as have Shazahn Padamsee and Shraddha Das. I’ve also benefitted from the positive publicity that that the pairing of Ajay Devgn and Emraan Hashmi has received in Once Upon A Time In Mumbai. And Omi Vaidya is outstanding.”
Talk veers to Chennai, and Madhur says, “I love south Indian food, and one must-do when here is to feast on local delicacies. A midnight stroll on the Marina beach is another activity on my to-do list. Chennai and Hyderabad are way ahead of Mumbai when it comes to film-related technical know-how.”
Is he likely to tap into Kollywood talent for his films? “I pick my actors primarily based on my gut-feel. They could be rank newcomers or established stars, but if I feel they’ll do justice to my characters, they are on. I think Bollywood is now looking towards Kollywood for new faces, and, to my mind, Suriya will be a very successful crossover star because he’s very versatile.”
So, when he’s not making movies, how does he keep himself busy? “I have few friends in the industry. In my downtime, you’ll mostly find me curled up with a book. I love reading biographies. My favourites are those of Dalai Lama, Osama Bin Laden, and Einstein.”
What next after DTBHJ and Heroine? “It’ll definitely be a film on a gay love affair. The subject has me all keyed up.” Knowing Madhur, his research work on this will be up to scratch, but is he willing to lose yet another constituency?

Genelia in Tamil Hot Khakha Khakha remake
Finally the speculation over who will play the female lead in Vipul Shah’s Hindi remake of Tamil super hit Khakha Khakha is over. It is Genelia D’souza who has been finalised to play the lead role in the film. After much debate whether Sonam Kapoor or Diana Penty would sign on, Genelia has replaced Asin in the film opposite John Abraham. The shooting begins this month.
A close friend of Genelia’s said, “Genelia has earlier worked with John in Hook Ya Crook but the film has been shelved after 90 per cent of it was shot. Vipul is a very prolific producer and Genelia has not had many offers lately. The role is also a very important one and although it is an action film, the Hindi remake will have the female lead playing an integral part in the film. Initially Vipul was keen to sign Sonam Kapoor after John refused to work with Asin. Sanju snips wife's item song
Not too many people remember that Mrs Maanyata Dutt was at one time not so long ago an actress and dancer.
She had performed a sizzling item song Alhad mast jawani in Prakash Jha’s Gangaajal in 2003. At that time Mrs Dutt was known as Dilnawaz Shaikh and was trying hard to make a career in Bollywood.
Now that she is happily ensconced in Pali Hill as Mrs Dutt most people would have forgotten the number that Maanyata had performed for Jha’s film, except for that fact that Gangaajal has come up for scrutiny and re-evaluation in a most unexpected way.
After the success of Prakash Jha’s Raajneeti, Gangaajal is being technically enhanced for renewed market appeal. That’s when Maanyata, a.k.a Dilnawaz Shaikh’s dance number resurfaced as a topic of conversation. Apparently well-wishers and friends of the Dutts who heard about the new attempts at the restoration of Gangaajal have urged the film’s producer and director to re-release the film without the item song. But Jha is in no mood to delete anything.
Says the director, “It’s true we are re-doing the sound and visuals of Gangaajal, along with my other films Damul, Mrityudand and Apaharan. We’re doing the colour-correction and converting the sound to high-digital quality for blue-ray videos. We aren’t deleting anything from Gangaajal or any of the films being restored.”
Recalling Maanyata’s item song Jha says, “When she got selected to do the item song she really worked hard on it and made it a memorable number.” Though at that time she was called Dilnawaz Shaikh, she insisted on being billed as ‘Maanyata’ for the item song.
Says Jha, “I remember her as possessing great dignity and a passion to excel. God bless her.” All we can say to Mrs Dutt’s journey from Dilnawaz Shaikh to Maanyata is — you’ve come a long way, baby!

Aamir Khan is the best: Hirani
Rajkumar Hirani is generous to a fault. At his office in Bandra, he is busy distributing books to the people around him. Having just returned from New York after a heavy-duty scripting session, the filmmaker is in a gregarious mood.
Filmfare has chosen him the top-ranking director. And the trade is waiting with bated breath to know what Raju will make next, especially since his 3-Idiots is the biggest hit in Bollywood history.
Raju dismisses speculation about making a movie called Hey Bhagwan on 300 Gods. “We have 33 crore Gods,’’ he says, “Why would I choose 300 of those? Unless of course, people think that in three hours I can only accommodate 300. Anyway the important issue here is that I will be making a movie on religion. But media reports saying it deals with 300 Gods is wrong. My writer Abhijat Joshi is here. And we have just got a fix on the idea. The script itself is still to be written. I’m also writing Munnabhai.’’
Asked whether he was flattered to be voted the number one director, Raju says, “My parents will be happy for sure. I will mail them a copy of the latest Filmfare. However, I don’t want to fall into this trap of numbers. I believe that today I’m on top because of 3-Idiots. Tomorrow there may be no film or there could be a film that has not done very well.
This can happen. So why fall into this trap? I believe that each film is my first film and I give it all I have. Just because I have three good films behind me, it doesn’t make me all-powerful. I have to still strive to give my best to whatever I undertake. A filmmaker is only as good as his last film.’’
He also dismisses constant media speculation on whether he will make his next with Aamir Khan or Shah Rukh Khan. Says he, “I have worked with the best — Aamir. However, I can’t say who the leading man in my next film is unless I have a ready script. I don’t write films keeping an actor in mind. It goes the other way around.’’

Filmfare has chosen him the top-ranking director. And the trade is waiting with bated breath to know what Raju will make next, especially since his 3-Idiots is the biggest hit in Bollywood history.
Raju dismisses speculation about making a movie called Hey Bhagwan on 300 Gods. “We have 33 crore Gods,’’ he says, “Why would I choose 300 of those? Unless of course, people think that in three hours I can only accommodate 300. Anyway the important issue here is that I will be making a movie on religion. But media reports saying it deals with 300 Gods is wrong. My writer Abhijat Joshi is here. And we have just got a fix on the idea. The script itself is still to be written. I’m also writing Munnabhai.’’
Asked whether he was flattered to be voted the number one director, Raju says, “My parents will be happy for sure. I will mail them a copy of the latest Filmfare. However, I don’t want to fall into this trap of numbers. I believe that today I’m on top because of 3-Idiots. Tomorrow there may be no film or there could be a film that has not done very well.
This can happen. So why fall into this trap? I believe that each film is my first film and I give it all I have. Just because I have three good films behind me, it doesn’t make me all-powerful. I have to still strive to give my best to whatever I undertake. A filmmaker is only as good as his last film.’’
He also dismisses constant media speculation on whether he will make his next with Aamir Khan or Shah Rukh Khan. Says he, “I have worked with the best — Aamir. However, I can’t say who the leading man in my next film is unless I have a ready script. I don’t write films keeping an actor in mind. It goes the other way around.’’

Imran Khan, Sonam have ‘terrific’ chemistry
After Salman Khan, it’s the showman Subhash Ghai who seems extremely gung-ho about the film I Hate Luv Storys, and for him the pair of Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor is like the hit-hit jodi of Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit – the pair that ruled the box office in the 90s with several hits.
So the man decided to buy the distribution rights of the film for the Delhi and Uttar Pradesh area. Ghai got Karan Johar’s production IHLS from UTV for Rs 3.5 crore. According to reports, the deal was inked on Tuesday. Ghai’s cousin Sanjay who looks after his business in the north confirmed this news to a daily.

Watch Housefull in theatres or get arrested Warning
Trying to save money by downloading ''Housefull'' from the Internet can land you in prison as the multi-starrer comedy is the first Indian film with an in-built anti-piracy software. The comedy which stars a host of A-listers including Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Arjun Rampal, Riteish Deshmukh and Jiah Khan will use a software called Republique to track down offenders.
"There is a call centre in Mumbai with 35 people who are keeping a close watch on the Internet and we have already tried the software. So I am warning everybody if you try to download ''Housefull'' you will be arrested," said the film''s director Sajid Khan who was in the city to promote the film along with the star cast.
Online piracy is the bane of the industry and a recent report revealed that in 2008, piracy cost the Indian film industry USD 959 million and about 571,000 jobs. The makers of ''Housefull'' meanwhile are confident of a bumper hit with Khan saying that by yesterday the film had already broken records of advanced bookings in small screen theatres.
"''Housefull'' got record collections when the advance bookings began in small screen theatres yesterday. It is an open challenge to all filmmakers to try and beat the record of my film which will be 2010''s highest grosser," said Khan.
Apart from a scintillating star cast, the film also boasts of a climax set in the Buckingham Palace with the Queen and Prince Charles. "In the climax Akshay Kumar''s character accidentally spills laughing gas in the entire Buckingham Palace and everyone from the Queen to the butler are laughing their heads off," said the director.

Is Sonam Kapoor playing Hot Tennis Star Sania Mirza on Screen?
Anees Bazmee’s next will be based on India’s ace Tennis star Sania Mirza and if sources are to be believed, Sonam Kapoor will be playing the role of onscreen Sania Mirza.
Sania Mirza, whose engagement with Shoaib Malik made the news yesterday, will have something more to look forward to. And even though Anees Bazmee might not agree to making film on Sania, but subject has striking resemblance to the Ace Indian Sports Lady.
The film titled as “Thank You”, will have Sonam Kapoor enacting Sania’s life onscreen, which has been full of controversy starting from her dress code, fatwas, her failed enagegement and now new engagement with Pakistani Cricket Star.

Akshay forces Farah to arrange a helicopter
Farah Khan displayed her motherly side recently while shooting for Tees Maar Khan with Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif at Malshej Ghat. Akshay wanted to return home after the shoots to be with his son, who was in Mumbai, which is why he declined the offer to stay in Malshej Ghat for 21 days.
This obviously meant extra expenses for Farah Khan. The director, who had brought her triplets to Malshej Ghat told Akshay that when she could bring her children from Mumbai, why he couldn’t stay on. But when Akshay refused to stay, she understood his feelings, being a mother herself and arranged for a helicopter for him.
She did it because Akshay told her that he didn’t want to be away from his son for this long. Once again, Farah’s shown her side as the true friend, hasn’t she?

Shocking sex scene in Love, Sex Aur Dhokha
All-out sex scene in Love, Sex Aur Dhokha may be the most shocking scene in a commercial hindi film yet Ekta Kapoor's next release, Love, Sex Aur Dhokha, directed by Dibakar Banerjee, is a path-breaking film in many ways. It's meant to shock and outrage. And though the film transmits that in every thread, the most scandalous part of the film is the sex scene between two actors.

The scene comes in the second story Paap Ki Dukaan. It is the most shocking scene to be ever filmed in a commercial Hindi film. Never before have two protagonists stripped down completely. But the nudity in the scene is not even remotely aimed to titillate. If anything, it is gag-inducing, guaranteed to repel you. Like the rape scene filmed on Monica Bellucci in Irreversible.
Dibakar Banerjee isn't happy, "I would like to state on record that I am not comfortable about the picture coming out. I want the scene to be judged as part of the film. To use the picture out of context will be damaging to the film. The idea is not to draw vicarious pleasure from it. The scene comes after you have lived with the character for 30 minutes.
“The story makes you live through the dilemma of the character and how they realise that they have done something they can never undo. It's tragic. I would advise the people who go to watch the film to not go for the nude scene as they will not get what they want."
Ekta Kapoor, Producer, echoes her director's thoughts, "The purpose of the nude scene is not to titillate. The scene is part of a story that deals with a MMS scandal and establishes loss of face and faith after the act. The scene is so stark and shot so realistically that at the end of the story, women will feel upset, men scared. When you love someone, you are uninhibited but when that person takes advantage of that, it's disgusting!"
Dibakar says, "I am apprehensive about the reaction of the members of the censor board as this kind of film needs that kind of sensitivity. I am all for the creative integrity of the subject matter and my job is to see that the message is delivered. It's not about the sex scene but how to retain the integrity of the story while remaining within the legal limits of the land. I'd say it's a genre-defining film and the most emotionally draining, gut-wrenching film I've made till now. There's a lot of heart burn in LSD."
