Vishnuvardhan gave politics a wide berth
Despite being a hugely popular film star and enjoying considerable fan following in Karnataka, actor Vishnuvardhan did not plunge into politics. He always kept a distance from it and was only seen at election campaigns, that too only when his close friend and actor-turned-politician Ambareesh was in the electoral fray.
In the past, political parties in the State reportedly made “unsuccessful bids” to rope Mr. Vishnuvardhan, into politics by fielding him in either Assembly or Lok Sabha elections. However, the actor was content in the world of cinema.
There have been many success stories of Kannada film stars making it big in politics. They include Ambareesh (three-time MP from Mandya Constituency), Ananth Nag (represented Malleswaram Assembly Constituency in Bangalore and was a minister in the J.H. Patel Cabinet), actor Shashikumar (represented the Lok Sabha from Chitradurga on Janata Dal-United ticket), ‘Pranayaraja’ Srinath (BJP MLC), Jaggesh (represented Turuvekere in the Assembly on Congress ticket and is now a BJP leader).
Like Kannada thespian Dr. Rajkumar, Mr. Vishnuvardhan was not lured into politics.
Several film stars in the Kannada industry tested their fate in politics. Some tasted success while others failed. It was only Ambareesh, popularly known as ‘Mandyada Gandu’, who has a successful track record in it. Dialogue King Saikumar’s dream of entering the Vidhana Soudha remains unfulfilled following his loss in the 2008 Assembly elections from Bagepalli Constituency in Kolar district on the BJP ticket. Even yesteryear actor Jayanthi’s brush with politics was unsuccessful.
The face of Ambareesh’s election campaign was Mr. Vishnuvardhan. He and his actor-wife Bharati had campaigned for Ambareesh, who shared a close bond with him. They entered the silver screen together with the Puttanna Kanagal-directed landmark film “Nagarahavu”.
After the film’s stupendous success, the duo never looked back and emerged as Kannada cinema’s popular actors. They continued their close bonding in their 37 years in Kannada cinema.
In spite of having a friend like Ambareesh, who was a political heavyweight, Mr. Vishnuvardhan was not attracted to politics though he was well aware that he could make it big owing to his popularity.
Another close friend comedian Dwarakeesh’s entry into politics was a disaster when he lost the elections from Hunsur Assembly Constituency in Mysore district under Kannada Nadu party.

Go have a party: Andhra DGP
The director general of police, Mr R.R. Girish Kumar, on Wednesday asked people to celebrate the arrival of New Year without fear and said his force would assure their safety.
“Go and party for the New Year,” he said. “The agitators have no right to disrupt the celebrations. People need not be afraid of such threats. We will provide security to the places where people celebrate and will not allow any disruption. People can enjoy the New Year as usual.”
The DGP said he had asked his officers to come down heavily on agitators who disrupt normal life, who take law into their hands or curb the rights of the common man. “In a democracy people have the right to do as per their wish within the ambit of law,” he said.
His assurance has given a sense of security to revellers and partygoers as well as hotels and resorts.
“His assurance is fantastic and we are on top of the world,” said Mr B. Jagadish Rao, general secretary of the AP Hotels Association. “Earlier, it was the practice of the police to ask us to keep the hotels closed on bandh days. With this assurance, we will keep them open.”
He said there were lots of cops on the streets and this would give people an opportunity to come out and have a good time.
“We had plans for the New Year party but then we had to call them off because of the tension,” said Mr Sanjiv Dhavan, an employee with HSBC Bank in Hitec City. “But the DGP’s announcement gives us relief. We have decided to party harder to ring in this New Year.”
The DGP also expressed concern at the apprehensions of industrialists, the decline of investment and the disruption of vehicle movement triggering shortage of essential commodities and price rise.
“Because of the violent agitation there is uncertainty and insecurity and the police has to act in a different way,” he said.

Tiger Woods "Broken teeth with golf club"
Furman Bisher one of America's most respected sports journalists claims that Golfer Tiger Woods needed face rebuilding after his angry wife Elin Nordegren hit him with a golf club, reports The Sun.
Wife broke Tiger Woods' teeth with golf club
Bisher described as the country's top golf writer said the nine iron smashed the golf legend's cheek bone and that his two front teeth were almost knocked out reported the newspaper website thesun.co.uk. He also claimed the injuries are the real reason Woods has not been seen in public since his mysterious car smash early Nov 27.
The journalist posted on his blog that Tiger spent America's Thanksgiving Day, Nov 26, exchanging texts with mistress Rachel Uchitel. He then went out to play poker with friends but left his mobile phone behind and Elin read one of the messages.
Woods returned at midnight and there was a "heated discussion".
"Tiger sat in a chair in the living room. Elin sat across from him, urging Tiger to just come clean. Tiger stayed to his guns and denied everything," Bisher posted.
"At one point Tiger turned away to look at the TV and as he turned back Elin hit him on the right side of the face with the head of a nine iron.
"She put a huge gash in the right side of his face next to his nose, causing his nose to bruise some, virtually knocking two of his upper teeth out and breaking the bone on the upper right side," he added.
The blog also revealed that as Woods tried to drive off, Elin smashed the car windows. He hit a tree outside their home in Orlando, Florida.
Bisher said the golfer took a private jet to Phoenix, Arizona, to see a plastic surgeon and cosmetic dentist for reconstructive procedures.
Tiger has now been linked to at least 14 women and has publicly apologised to his wife for cheating on her. While Elin is said to have seen a divorce lawyer and spent Christmas with her family in her native Sweden.

'Best Job in the World' winner stung by deadly irukandji
'Best Job in the World' winner Ben Southall was recently stung by a potentially deadly jellyfish.
The 34-year-old Brit said he had experienced a "crazy 24 hours" after the tiny irukandji stung him off the coast of Queensland in Australia.
"I was enjoying a post Christmas jet ski session with some friends at a quiet beach on Hamilton Island. As I climbed off the back of the ski and onto the beach (I) felt a small bee-like sting on my forearm," News.com.au quoted him as writing on his blog.
"I was feeling pretty hot and sweaty, had a headache and felt pretty sick too with pain in my lower back and a tightness in the chest and a really high blood pressure.
"I had a minor brush with what can be a very serious jellyfish," he added.
However, he's fine now.
"Horrible incident. Lesson learnt - always wear a stinger suit," said Southall.

Dress your man this New Year

As we wind down to the party of the year - after all, it's the last, and biggest, bash of 2009 - we tell you what your man should be wearing on New Year's Eve. What's more, we even got a guy (see picture) to model and demonstrate!
Style check
After a survey of menswear for Fall/Winter '09, and listening to advice from GQ magazine stylist Natasha Chib, we came up with a list of essential trends your man could pick from:
- Anything purple is hot, hot, hot! Wear them as stripes, micro stripes, solid colours…
- If he won't wear purple, jewel-toned shirts or even monochromes are hot
- You (well, actually he) can't go wrong with some subtle sequin or a little bling, provided he's comfortable with it
- If he's angling for a more formal look, single-button suits are the way to go.
- Depending on where you're going, loafers, boat shoes or even funky sneakers are A-Ok!
- Wear jeans with tapering legs for a more tailored look
- Slip into slip-on boat shoes etc for an edgier party look
That's when Chib stepped in and helped him pick out a couple of very interesting options at The Collective, a menswear store at Phoenix Mills, Mumbai.
Look 1:

Jeans: Armani
Price: Rs9,000
Shirt: Richard James
Price: Rs12,000
Jacket: Etro
Price:Rs73,000
The jeans and star-patterned shirt ('Richard James make the coolest shirts,' said Chib) adhere to the 'not too formal' diktat, the textured midnight blue jacket adds a polished formality to the look.
Look 2:

Jeans: Eams Sewn
Price: Rs9,000
Shirt: The Collective
Price: Rs4,500
Shoes: Car shoes
Price: Rs12,000
"If you want to avoid the jacket, wear a tux shirt. It's still formal enough," said Chib, who paired the purple tux shirt with tapering jeans. 'They're another hot trend this season. They create a more tailored, put-together look," she added.
"Just remember a little bit goes a long way," said Chib, "after all, men like to be comfortable in what they're wearing."

War Continuous Betweein Chiru and Raja
Angry man of Tollywood Rajashekhar doesn’t want to leave chiranjeevi at any cost. After the disastrous performance of chiranjeevi as a politician with Praja Rajyam in last general elections, Rajshekhar doesn’t want to keep chiranjeevi peaceful even on his stand for “United Andhra Pradesh,” which made chiranjeevi and his party beheaded in Telangana.
“If chiranjeevi has pleaded for United Andhra Pradesh and toured the districts of Andhra and Rayalaseema regions, it is no way useful. chiranjeevi must tour Telangana districts and educate the people by explaining them the reasons for his stand. If chiranjeevi doesn’t dare to do this, it is useless to speak about United Andhra Pradesh. If he succeeds in touring Telangana districts, then we can believe that he has done full justice,” said Rajashekhar.
When Telangana students are not sparing leaders like Nagam Janaradhan Reddy by beating him with chappals and making him unconscious, even after his voice for Telangana, how can they leave chiranjeevi if he arrives in Telangana speaking about “United Andhra Pradesh?” It will be only a suicidal attempt and chiranjeevi can never risk with his life.

Tiwari episode a plot: Jaiswal
The Union minister, Mr Sri Prakash Jaiswal, said on Tuesday that the sex scandal charges levelled against the former Andhra Pradesh Governor, Mr N.D. Tiwari, were a conspiracy to defame him.
Speaking on the sidelines of a party function, he said that an inquiry would expose those behind the conspiracy and bring out the truth.
Earlier, Mr Jaiswal targeted regional parties, saying their sole interest was personal financial gains, leading to corruption.
Mr Tiwari himself is in no mood to relent. After his disgraceful exit from the Raj Bhavan, Mr Tiwari is now preparing for a legal and political battle to clear his name.
“I am innocent and have been framed in this conspiracy. But I will fight back — legally and politically — to clear my name,” he told reporters after his arrival in Dehradun where he will be staying for the next few days. He also made it clear that he would continue to remain in active politics, a clear rebuff to those who had thought that the veteran leader would call it quits after the disgrace over the alleged scandal.
Though Mr Tiwari refused to elaborate on his plans at the moment, one of his close aides said the former Governor was aware of the identity of the possible conspirators.
“We are aware of who these persons are and it is a matter of time before they get exposed. Mr Tiwari will fight back the charges in a court of law as well as politically to clear his name. The curtain is certainly not down on this drama,” the aide said.
The aide said that the veracity of the so-called sex tapes was highly questionable and with the VFX technique easily available, such tapes could easily be made.
“Scandals about Mr Tiwari are being thrown out only after he took over as AP Governor. First, it was the paternity suit and now this. Surely, there is someone who wanted him out of the Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad,” the aide added. If sources are to be believed, the recent sex scandal has not demoralised the 86-year-old leader.
In fact, it has made him all the more determined to bounce back in politics.
“He resigned because he did not wish to embarrass the Congress leadership. He did not get time to clarify his position or get the tapes examined. But now that he is out of the post, he will hit back with renewed force,” the aide said.
Mr Tiwari is likely to return to Delhi in a few days to consult his lawyers against the channel that aired the alleged sex tapes. He will also seek an audience with the Congress high command with a request that he may be given a chance to clear his name.

T threat ruins New year plans
Just when harried Hyderabadis were gearing up to say ‘good riddance’ to a nasty 2009, and ring in 2010 on the right note, T activists announced, “Not so soon...”
With the agitating students of OU and other student wings making it clear that they “will not tolerate” any New Year revelry that makes light of the current situation in the state, young party hoppers who hoped to wrap up 2009 in style, are a disappointed lot.
While some young ’uns are grounded, thanks to the security scare, others confess they have cancelled their New Year’s eve plans to avoid unpleasant run-ins with frenzied mobs, who are sure to play party poopers. And even though cops are doing their best to reassure the public, nothing seems to be working to ease the tension.
Youngsters are wary of heading to crowded bashes and are opting for risk-free private parties. Meenakshii Thakur, a second year student of CBIT, says, “My parents have asked me not to step out for any party this New Year. And considering how tense the situation has become of late, one can’t really blame anyone for feeling paranoid. I hate the thought of sitting cooped up indoors when the world is celebrating. I might go to Mumbai or plan a house party at a friend’s place. One thing is for sure, I want to avoid trouble.”
Permission problems don’t plague young girls alone this year. Boys too are being grounded by worried parents, says Firdous Majeed, a final year student of St Mary’s. “parents are apprehensive of letting us go out on New Year’s eve. House parties are the norm now as it doesn’t feel too safe to venture out. I am also planning to stay at home and ring the year in with my close friends.”
Even those who have their reservations and tickets in place are backing out. Aditi Gupta, an engineering graduate from Vasavi College of Engineering, says, “After I heard about the latest threat, I decided to scrap my original party plans. Instead, I’ll head to a private bash that doesn’t attract much attention.”
Commissioner of Police B. Prasada Rao, meanwhile, says cops will be able to keep things under control. “Telangana supporters cannot ruin celebrations. Starting today, Section 144 will be enforced for a week. Passes for New Year bashes are being sold at star hotels and upmarket commercial establishments only.
There will be continuous patrolling around hotels and nightclubs all through the night. Also, the control rooms have been instructed to take every call made to the helpline seriously.”

T-stir pushing investors away: CM
The Chief Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, on Tuesday presented a gloomy picture of the industrial sector in the state.
He said that several companies were shifting proposed projects to other states or deferring investments because of Telangana troubles.
Mr Rosaiah made these observations after the representatives of the Confederation of Indian Industry, the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry, besides captains of top pharma and IT companies met him to express concern at the state of affairs.
According to the CM, Bharat Forge Limited dropped investment proposals in the state and decided to shift to Gujarat. Peugeot, Kaparo, Lakshmi Mittal, Brandix, J.P. Morgan and Stanley, United Health Group and leading pharma ESAI have all deferred investments.
“The image of Hyderabad as an investment destination has taken a beating because of the violence,” he said.
Bulk drug industry alone suffered loss of Rs 500 crore in the past 20 days and the hotel industry suffered losses with reservations dropping by 40 per cent, he said.
Meanwhile, the CM is making a last-minute effort to retain the two-day CII summit which was scheduled to be held on January 21 at Hyderabad but is now being shifted to Chennai.
The Union commerce minister, Mr Anand Sharma, categorically told Mr Rosaiah that the event would be held in the city only if the Union home ministry concurred.
The PM, Dr Manmohan Singh, is scheduled to inaugurate the summit.

Wettest couple of 09 is...

Before presenting the awards, here are a few Cheesie FACTS:
1. Cheesie awards are given out on the basis of voodoo consultantions, crystal ball results, votes from Tantrik Babas and of course none of this would happen if not for our eccentric editor's permission.
2. Known as The Cheesies to you, it was originally going to be called The Boot Awards. But Smart Cookie (read: Over-Smart) thought it’s not a smart idea and the pretentiously coy Party Girl RESONATED with her, like she always does…like she always does. (Know what I mean now?)
3. I, Bollywood Basanti, suggested The Moo Awards but Miss Style Spy thought throwing a cow at someone is not really nice and besides it’s a dung-ee name added Gossip Girl. (What’s dung-ee? Why does she make up her own words?)
And last but not the least
4. The categories of these awards are non-fictitious and any resemblance to name, place, animal or a thing is purely intentional. (We at iDiva keep it REAL under ALIAS names of course! Tee Hee)
And the Big Hunka' Cheese goes to...
1. Wettest couple of the year:
Ideally, it should be Priyanka Chopra and Harman Baweja because their chemistry was arid dry. No love sweat breaking between them under the blanket (read: WET-blanket) lead to no love lost between them, we guess. But we’re talking literal meaning here and the award goes to Katrina Kaif and Akshay Kumar for gyrating on the wettest song of the year in De Dana Dan. Katz’s clinging saree and Aki’s seducing moves made us go "wheee"!

2. Flop show of the year: It’s none other than platitude-spouting Harman Baweja! He is so trite just like his movies and even more hackneyed is his dialogue delivery. We thought Indians CANNOT tolerate two things a] Cricket mein haar and b] Desh pe waar. With Victory he LOST all his audience but with What's Your Rashee he simply KILLED them. Why are we still tolerating him?

3. Drama Queen of the year: ...or the Drag Queen if you want to call it so – Rohit Verma of Bigg Boss 3 fame. We were thinking that somewhere down the line someone overwhelmingly failed him in some way. Whether its his friends or the fashion institute or the public school system or Posh Spice (noticed his hair-style and the way he walks, its like the fugly version of her) we don’t know but whatever it is, it's made him a huge Melodramatic Male… oops female!

4. Publicity stunt of the year:
- Rakhi Sawant’s decision to get married on national TV.
B. Shweta Tiwari in a bikini taking a bath under a waterfall on national TV.
C. Shah Rukh Khan saying, "You KHAN’T deport me" on international TV.
This is not Filmfare Awards and yet the award goes to Shah Rukh Khan. Mr. Khan if George Bush can be deported, if Abdul Kalam can be deported then so kh-an you! What say?

5. Bloodiest movie of the year: Kurbaan? Gulaal? Baabarr...NO, it’s What's Your Rashee? Didn’t we tell you earlier that this movie killed people? If you think there was no blood involved, you’re right. There was no blood involved because they died of brain hemorrhage which was caused by the extensive hamming by the actor, the director, the scriptwriter and the editor. There was also a rumour that it killed Michael Jackson. Yeah, that doesn’t make any sense but then so doesn’t the movie.

6. Over-exposure of the year: ...And the nominees are Rakhi Sawant, Sherlyn Chopra and Negar Khan but the award goes to Vindu Dara Singh! His blabbering, bantering and bitching must have made him a household name and probably that’s why he won Rs 1 crore but by god watching him day in and day out on TV was excruciating. He was so over-exposed on Bigg Boss that the rest of the housemates were over-shadowed. He got the maximum coverage with minimum effort.
The former nominees had to shed their clothes but all this guy had to say was "Desh Ka Adesh" and the camera would turn to him. Ladies now you know exposing is not just related to clothes.

7. Biggest wannabe of the year: Sushmita Sen came close for being a wannabe Angelina Jolie but lost to Uday Chopra. As rightly pointed by Gossip Girl, he’s copy-catting (see again she’s making her own words) Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. He tones his body like Salman Khan. He styles like Shah Rukh Khan (his geeky look in Pyaar Impossible is inspired by Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi) and like Aamir Khan he does one movie a year.
Actually he’s a step ahead of Aamir in this area he does one movie in four years because he’s such a wannabe that no one would cast him that’s why he has to now write his own scripts to star in his own movie which big brother Aditya Chopra to produce. How convenient, we say!

8. Statue of the year: Nope its not narcissist Mayawati who poses in front of her own pictures and unveils her own statues. But it’s a good topic probably Miss Style Spy can spy check her wardrobe, it would be fun.
Anyhoo… the statue of the year is Abhishek Bachchan and the person who tells him STATUE all the time is his wife Aishwarya Rai (who learnt this Statue game from Salman Khan, remember Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam?) If she says, "Statue, sit", he does. If she says, "don’t sit", he doesn't. Well that’s not true probably, but what’s with going on a idli diet and tagging along with her at international awards just because she says, "Statue and do what I say".
Yes the official word would be henpecked but there is nothing official about our cheesie awards. MIND IT.

9. Mis-cast brand ambassador:
- Delicate darling Katrina Kaif brand endorsing IPL cricket team Royal Challengers.
B. Abhishek Bachchan endorsing beauty soap.
C. Talented Rani Mukerji endorsing mosquito repellent brand.
D. None of the above.
The answer is D. Because if Shilpa Shetty can own a team why can’t Katrina endorse one? And if Shah Rukh Khan can endorse soap and John Abraham can endorse men fairness cream, why can’t Abhishek? So who is the winner, you ask? It’s DUSKY beauty Kajol endorsing anti-ageing FAIRNESS cream. If you’ve seen the ad you would know how unnatural she looks. Somebody please tell her ho-lay ho-lay that it looks UGH!

10. Popat of the year 2009: We're talking about being a scapegoat, an idiot. And the idiot of the year is not Aamir Khan or Abhishek Bachchan or Harman Baweja or Rakhi Sawant or anyone from Bollywood for that matter. The biggest idiot or idiots we should say is YOU. As in you, aam junta, the common people. You fall for their antiques, pay a bomb for their stupid movies and waste your time reading their stupid interviews.
They make a total POPAT out of you and you gladly let them. Next year please ask this question to yourself are they worth your time and money? In the mean time…the cheese and the mouse and the mouse trap goes to YOU!
Ok now I have to run because I've posted the last batch of cheesies without running by the eccentric editor.
See you again next year with STALE set of cheesies (didn’t you know some types of cheese are like wine, gets better with age?) but that doesn’t mean you log out. NEVER LOG OUT!

Best of Everything in 2009!

Taylor Lautner, AR Rahman, Tiger Woods
Biggest movie grosser This year was definitely good for the box office. There were so many movies we just had to see! Standing in long lines for tickets didn't even matter. It was a race between vampires, wizards, three idiots and transformers. But box office figures tell us that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was the highest grossing film in the world this year - it made a total of $394 million on opening nights across the world - though it had competition from Twilight sequel New Moon and Avatar, one of the most-hyped 3D movies till date.
Hottest shirtless guy
Apart from being a part-time werewolf, he's also a martial artist who had us drooling as we watched the Twilight sequel. Taylor Lautner, who appears shirtless in many scenes, plays Jacob Black in New Moon, and amazed us with his washboard abs and muscular arms. They don't make guys like that anymore!
Best make-up launch
Which woman can resist make-up? Our make-up bags are already overloaded and yet we couldn't help but shout with joy when Dolce and Gabbana launched their new line in February. The duo designer's trademarks, gold embellishment, have rubbed off on their make-up packaging as well. The line's packaging has pure metal gold. Make-up and gold together? We almost fainted with disbelief. What a treat!
Most secure job
All those years of hard work in medical school have paid off for all the doctors. They seem to have had the most job stability in 2009. With new diseases, and hypochondriacs on the prowl, the services of doctors were in demand all year around.
Most played songs of 2009
Can't read my, Can't read my, No he can't read my poker face (she's got me like nobody), Can't read my, Can't read my, No he can't read my poker face (she's got me like nobody).
Does this ring a bell? How can it not? It's the song that had us humming, and tapping our feet for a while now. Not only that, Lady Gaga's Poker Face reached Number 1 in nearly 20 countries, including all the major music markets of the world, making it one of the most played songs of this year.
Also sharing the distinction is AR Rahman's Oscar Award-winning Jai Ho. The song from Slumdog Millionaire also bagged two Grammy nominations this year.
Juiciest gossip
News of Tiger Woods's many affairs have kept the gossip queen in each of us extremely happy. As more and more women came forward to admit affairs with the golfer, it became increasingly difficult for the media to keep a tab on them. Till date we know of eighteen women he's allegedly had affairs with, and we're wondering if there are any more!
Most shocking news
Tears rolled down cheeks freely when the world woke up to the news that Michael Jackson, the self-styled King of Pop, died on June 25. People all over the world mourned him and couldn't digest the fact that the most influential entertainer of all time was gone. MJ's album, Thriller, still remains one of the best-selling albums.

Amitabh Bachchan as host of Bigg Boss, Katrina Kaif, Shilpa and Raj Kundra
Most watched TV show Bigg Boss Season 3 began airing on October 4, and it's had millions of viewers glued to their TV set. This season, Amitabh Bachchan filled the host's position. The reality show took to a lot of people's fancy, after all, who wouldn't want to watch the drama that unfolds when a group of people with different personalities have to live together in once house. We guess you already know that Vindu Dara Singh won Season 3 and can't wait for the next season to begin.
Most wearable trend
The single-shoulder - tops, dresses, jumpsuits, gowns, sari-blouse, kurtas - ruled women's wardrobes in 2009. The style conscious embraced the trend and the conservatives loved the single shoulder because they could show enough skin without putting the décolletage on show! Whether it was a body hugging mini-dress or a free flowing drape gown, the single-shoulder was adapted by every conceivable piece of clothing (except for the bottoms of course!)
Most scripted reality show
What's the best way to choose a groom? Star in a reality TV show that will help you find one, duh! After all, that what Rakhi Sawant did. On Rakhi Ka Swayamvar, the infamous item girl selected one Elesh Parujanwala from among sixteen prospective grooms after setting for them such hard tasks as love letter writing. The dialogues - everything, really -was so scripted, we're wondering why they didn't include the word 'scripted' in the title of the show.
Biggest Diva
And the title goes to… Katrina Kaif. This Barbie doll, the first Indian face of Barbie, is and will be the world's most famous doll that every little girl wants to play with.
Even though Kaif is Indian, she wasn't brought up in India. So ehen she first came to India, like many others she wanted a shot at Bollywood, except she couldn't speak Hindi, couldn't act or dance and she didn't even have a godfather. But she's been working hard and delivering hits and people applauding her performance instead of her looks, so she deserves this win.
Hottest couple we'd love to hate
We're tired of Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor and of that tattoo!
There's a new hot couple on the block, they're rich, famous, rich and did I mention rich? They're none other than Shilpa and Raj Kundra, who recently tied the knot in Khandala in November. Raj has been showering his wife with gifts like a penthouse in London, a Lamborghini and loads of other stuff that cost a fortune. Wise choice, Shilps. No wonder, we love to hate you!
Biggest worry
The recession hit India with a big bang this year and many lost their jobs. Companies all over were cutting costs to break even, if not make a profit. Let's hope the economy booms next year.
Sportsman we couldn't take our eyes off
Girls swoon over him, if not for the sport itself. Yep, we're talking about none other than Cristiano Ronaldo. And - this gets better - he's currently the highest paid football player in the world, thanks to his contract with Real Madrid. We don't have enough space to mention all his achievements, but this year he proved why he's the best by becoming the first Premier League player ever to be named FIFA World Player of the Year.
Designer who rocked the ramp
Anand Kabra is emerging as one of the most talented young designers, a freethinker and unconfined to a predictable style statement that shows in his creations. He's one of few Indian designers who has a mind set on going international. We couldn't get over his collection at Lakme Fashion Week, artful simplicity with a blend of uniqueness. He's the designer who made us stand up and cheer this year.
Weirdest news
How many Indian actresses or former beauty queens do you know who were soldiers? Turns out Celina Jaitley was one. The revelation came on Raaz Pichhle Janam Ka, a reality show based on past life regression, which promises to open up the mysteries of rebirth and reincarnation. Turns out jaitley was a 21-year-old German soldier fighting in Italy. Weird or what?

At Star Plus' Jashn 2010 - Dhamaka Naye Saal Ka when director and friend Karan Johar offered Shah Rukh Khan to be a part of Dostana Part 2, King Khan immediately turned down the offer and said that after sporting a six-pack he would not like to spoil his image of a macho man.
He added though that, on any given day, he would love to flirt with Abhishek Bachhan and John Abraham, but still not at the cost of his "straight" image. We wonder what wife Aishwarya Rai Bachhan has to say to this who was present right there!!

Rush to a dentist for an HIV test!
American dentists are now offering saliva tests that can detect HIV Dentist
Rush to a dentist for an HIV test! within minutes.
"The surprise factor is you are offering this," the New York Post quoted Dr. Catrise Austin, who has tested some 100 patients for HIV at her Midtown clinic, since July this year, as saying.
She added: "The topic of HIV can be uncomfortable for some, so we decided we would talk about it with patients in a matter-of-fact way, the way we talk about cavities and gum disease."
Testing for HIV is simple: a patient’s upper and lower gums are swiped with a 15dollar OraQuick Advance kit.
In 20 minutes, the swab changes colours to show if the result is positive or negative.
New York is now funding dental HIV tests at Metropolitan Hospital, Harlem Hospital, Jacobi Medical Center and some small community dental clinics.

What to do if you're caught cheating

You're at a New Year's party with your boyfriend and you run into your ex - or see some serious eye candy. You want to explore greener pastures, but don't want your guy to suspect you're cheating on him, so here's what to do:
Say he's gay Your boyfriend catches you in a suggestive position with someone else when he comes back from the bar/bathroom/smoke. Chill out! Act like you think he's being unnecessarily annoyed and whisper in his ears 'He's gay!' and you can probably add that he was giving you tips on how to show off your cleavage because he's a lingerie designer. And then add 'He's Christian (and some made up Russian surname instead of Dior) I can't believe you didn't know that! You men don't know anything.'
Make use of the moves
Your sweetheart is late and you've decided to meet directly at the party. Whoever heard of going to a party without arm candy? So spot someone you fancy and party with him, at least till Mr Late shows up. If he catches you dancing with Mr Arm Candy, don't panic. Instead, wave him over and say 'This is (insert random name) and he's a dancer. He used to teach me how to dance, and I'm meeting him after so long! His wife was dancing with me earlier and I want you to meet her. They sure know how to dance.' Then turn to Mr Arm Candy, who's probably confused, and hand your boyfriend over to him, saying 'Here teach him to dance while we wait for your wife.' Thinking you're crazy, he'll take off. Plus your boyfriend will not want to dance with another guy. Problem solved.
Play damsel in distress
Your ex, whom you haven't seen in a while, shows up at the New Year's Eve party looking very buff and handsome. Suddenly you're jealous and want him back! You manage to get him alone and do make out. Post romp, your hair's a mess and you have a couple of buttons undone, which is how the boyfriend finds you. All's not lost. You can say that you were feeling sick and wanted to puke, and this nice guy came to your rescue.
Rely on family
This guy at the party has been giving you the eye, and you're flattered. But you're there with your boyfriend. Somehow, you signal the guy and tell him to meet you outside; tell the boyfriend that you need to call a cousin who's somewhere in the area. Then you and the new hottie make out in your car. If your boyfriend catches you together, just pass the guy off as the cousin who's really bad at directions, so you had to pick him up. Sorted!!
Have any tips to share? Leave a comment and let us know.
Women who made us proud in 2009

They weren't flashed across your TV screens too often. Their names probably don't ring a bell. Their stories may have slipped you by. But at the end of the year, we can't help but salute these women whose actions made us really proud all of 2009...
1. Rukhsana Kausar
She's the 21-year-old from Jammu and Kashmir who shot the Pakistani militants who forced their way into her home in September this year. When they demanded food and a place to sleep from her father, he refused. But as the militants beat up her father, Rukhsana didn't cower in fear. She took an axe and struck one of her father's assailants and then took his AK47 and shot him dead. She then injured the other militant too. Now that's what we call bravery!
2. Saina Nehwal
Not to be confused with Sania Mirza, Saina Nehwal is a badminton champion in her own right. At age 19, she is ranked 6 in the Badminton World Federation. In June 2009, she beat Chinese Lin Wang and became the first Indian ever to win a BWF Super Series title, the most prominent badminton series of the world by winning the Indonesia Open. In August, Saina was rewarded with the Arjuna award!

3. Lubna Hussein
She was fined $200 for violating decency laws in Sudan. Did she walk naked in the streets? No! She wore pants for crying out loud. Well, this lady was not afraid of Sudan or its law enforcers for that matter. She refused to pay the fine and said instead that she would protest the laws by spending a month in prison. You know what else she did? She walked into the court in Khartoum, Sudan's capital, wearing the same pair of loose-fitted green slacks that she had been arrested in. We don't care much for the pants but we really like her style!
4. Nisha Susan
We can't get enough of Nisha and her Pink Chaddi Campaign. While most of us silently detest the self-righteous Muthalik, Nisha dared to do something about this chap's outrageous threats to marry off couples that he spotted together on Valentine’s Day. She engaged women across the country by getting them to send in pink panties. On 14 February (Valentine's Day), she had over 500 pink panties couriered to Muthalik's office. The perfect Valentine's present, we think!
5. Women commuters
You know how when your train halts at a station, you will usually find some cheap a** from the opposite train pass some lewd comment at the girls. More often than not, we are trained to ignore their charade but these women from Kalyan didn't do that. They approached Mumbai Mirror with a letter describing the nuisance and even attached photos of the offending men. The letter was promptly forwarded to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) in Thane, who immediately swung into action and nabbed some of the offenders.
More recently, a group of girls beat up a co-passenger mid-air when the crew ignored their complaint about his misbehaviour. Bravo girls!

6. Lisa Ray
The beautiful actress was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer called Multiple Myeloma in June this year. It is apparently an incurable cancer of the white blood cells which produce antibodies. But Lisa isn't hiding in the shadows. We recently saw her looking as lovely as ever on the red carpet at the Toronto Film Festival. She's also been blogging about her condition and has used it to bring the spotlight on Myeloma and Cancer Awareness.
7. Anuradha Namashivaya
The only women to have ever competed in the Ms. Fitness Championships in Las Vegas, Anuradha started her own company called Sportz Divas this year. It aims to support sportswomen. She wants to free these sports divas of the worries of the logistics and enable them to perform their best. She wants to share their stories with the world and let people know that sportswomen go beyond Sania Mirza and PT Usha and definitely beyond the Chak De team! Way to go, Anuradha!

New Year to begin with ‘Blue Moon’ eclipse
End of 2009 and beginning of 2010 are going to be significant in terms of astronomy.
A ‘Blue Moon’, used off-hand in many expressions, is going to occur in the month-end, on December 31, according to a press note from the B.M. Birla Science Centre on Monday.
When a month has two full moons, the second full moon is known as ‘Blue Moon’, and the phenomenon is very rare, the press note informed.
Interestingly, the ‘Blue Moon’ will also be accompanied by a partial lunar eclipse, visible from any place in India. The eclipse will begin at 10.45 p.m.(IST), though the darkening of the moon will start only 22 minutes after midnight.
The eclipse will peak 30 minutes later, yet covering only a small portion of the moon. It will be over at 1.24 a.m. on January 1. However, the moon will continue to be in the region of partial shadow up to 3 a.m., the press note informed, while debunking all the superstitions associated with the eclipse.

Chiru on top in Airtel Mobitude 2009
Despite his adieu to filmdom, megastar Chiranjeevi is still a rage among moviegoers of the State. If the preferences of Airtel subscribers of the State are anything to go by, the actor-turned-politician tops the Most Downloaded Telugu Actor category of the Airtel Mobitude 2009 ahead of Ravi Teja and Venkatesh.
Coming to actresses, Nayantara is the most downloaded beating Ileana and Namitha in the Telugu Actress category. Mickey J Meyer’s ‘Nijanga Nenena’ from the hit film ‘Kotha Bangaru Lokam’ is the tune most downloaded followed by ‘Pavvu Takkuva Tommidi’ of Nachavule and a sentinmental ‘Anna Chelleli Anubhandham’ from ‘Gorintaku’.
Spread across different parameters, Airtel Mobitude 2009 is a study conducted by telecom major Bharti Airtel based on 220 million downloads on mobiles across music, images and games categories, according to a press release. The results of the annual survey, which captures preferences of 116 million mobile users across the country were released by the company here on Monday.
Aamir most downloaded
In Bollywood, Aamir Khan beat the other Khans, Salman and Shah Rukh, to become the most downloaded actor. Akshay Kumar and new-found heartthrob of the nation Ranbir Kapoor came fourth and fifth, respectively. Among actresses, it was the gorgeous Katrina Kaif who beat other beauties in the race. She was followed by Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra and Bipasha Basu. Hollywood stars were as popular as their counterparts from the Hindi film industry, the study said.
Not surprisingly, cricket reigns supreme and the boys of the Indian team top the male sport stars category. Most downloaded is master blaster Sachin Tendulkar followed by the Indian captain M.S. Dhoni, Virendra Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh and tennis sensation from Spain Rafael Nadal.
Good partners
Beauty and tennis seem to go together. Russian women dominated the Most Downloaded Female Sport stars category. Barring Hyderabadi tennis star Sania Mirza, who came in second, it was the girls from Russia all the way. Led by Maria Sharapova, tennis players Anna Chakvetadze, Anna Kournikova and Ana Ivanoviæ were the most downloaded, the study said.
It is no secret that music and Indians go in sync with each other. The study reflected that music was most downloaded in the States of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Punjab. “Regional music was as popular as Hindi songs in all these States.”
Surprisingly, for an audience that hums music from films most of the time, it is a prank April Fool tune that is most downloaded followed by the Oscar-winning ‘Jai Ho’ from Slumdog Millionaire in the third slot.
The study also revealed that messaging activity peaks during New Year eve. Users send maximum number of messages during New Year followed by Deepavali, Dasara, Hindu New Year and Friendship Day.

Law student held for Nagam attack
The sleuths of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) on Monday arrested a law student in connection with the attack on the Telugu Desam MLA and former minister, Mr Nagam Janardhan Reddy.
The CID officials said more arrests — for damaging MLAs’ vehicles on December 24 — are on the cards.
T. Rahul Reddy, 20, a second year law student and the son of one Mr Hitendar Reddy was the fourth accused arrested in Nagam Janardhan Reddy attack case. He has been booked for unlawful assembly and rioting.
The DGP, Mr R.R. Girish Kumar, said, “Students have admitted that some ‘outsiders’ had come to the campus and resorted to violence. Students should not allow the entry of anti-social elements into the campus. Students may have to face criminal cases due to their association with the anti-social elements.”

Earlier, the police had arrested one T. Nagaraju, alias Srikanth Raju, the prime accused in the MLA attack case, has been involved in 17 other cases including murder, robbery, extortion and kidnapping. K. Venkanna, 26, and R. Sattaiah, 29, were also arrested.
Meanwhile, the ABVP filed a petition in State Human Rights Commission alleging that Rahul, who was picked up on December 25, has not yet been produced before the court. The SHRC directed the police commissioner to submit a report by 11 am on Tuesday.

Don’t take police for granted: DGP
The director-general of police, Mr R.R. Girish Kumar, on Monday told political parties not to take the police for granted, and took serious objection to leaders naming and accusing senior cops of being partial.
The Telangana Rashtra Samiti president, Mr K. Chandrasekhar Rao, while addressing the Joint Action Committee meeting on Friday, had named four inspectors-general of police and accused them of ill-treating students of Osmania University and warned that he would teach them a lesson in future.
Leaders from Andhra and Rayalaseema too made allegations against the police officers at Anantapur and Vijayawada.
IPS officers took serious note of all this and complained that such statements had demoralised the police force. Following this, the DGP came out with strongly worded statement in support of his force on Monday.
Mr Kumar warned that anyone indulging in provocative speeches inciting violence will be dealt with under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code.
“Some of the political parties are naming police officers accusing them of partiality,” he said. “I want to tell political parties and the public that police is impartial. We are neither for nor against Telangana or Andhra-Rayalaseema. Not only IGPs but all officers are neutral.”
The DGP added that the police was abiding by the Constitution and rule of law and nothing else.
He further said that there was no dichotomy in government instructions. “The government told us that peaceful agitation shall be allowed and violence shall not be tolerated,” said Mr Girish Kumar.
“It is easy to throw stones on the police like throwing stones on buses,” he said. “Character assassination and motive attribution to police is not good. Such allegations of partiality affect the motivation of the force.”
He added that police exhibited utmost restraint in dealing with the agitation.
“Our men are on duty day and night,” he said. “Police is under great pressure as many of the elected representatives including two MPs, four MLCs and 21 MLAs are on fast unto death. It is a tough time for police. But we handled them with utmost restraint.”
The DGP also asked the electronic media not to repeatedly telecast violent incidents.
“When the same clippings are on air from morning to evening this will affect the public mind,” he said.
He added that commissioners of police could restrain channels and cable operators.

Students may lose an academic year
Even as student union leaders and political parties are agitating for a separate Telangana state, forcing the city’s universities to stay shut for over a month, thousands of students studying in these universities and their affiliated colleges stand a risk of losing an academic year. JNTU and OU officials admit that if the current situation continues for another 15 days, nothing can be done to salvage the year. If the exams are not held soon, city professors fear the students will have to forego a whole year as they will be behind schedule.
What’s worse is the fact that agitating students are ready to “forego” this academic year for separate statehood and are calling it the “Telangana sadhana year.”
“We have been requesting the students to conduct their protests and attend classes simultaneously. If classes don’t start in the next couple of days, thousands of students might not get their degrees on time this year,” says Prof Sudarshan Rao, Principal, OU Arts college.
Caught in this crossfire are students of 300 engineering colleges and 98 MBA institutions affiliated to JNTU. The university which should have commenced its second semester by now, hasn’t yet completed its first semester exams. Prof. Lal Kishore, rector of JNTU says the chances of salvaging this academic year are slim. “We have lost 40 working days. This will adversely affect the prospects of final year students looking for jobs.”
Students who had plans to go abroad or appear for competitive examinations are also in panic mode. Y. Kiranmayee, an engineering student of OU College of Technology, says, “From this year onwards, they have permitted third year students to apply for GATE. The exam will have questions from the final year syllabus too. We haven’t even started our second semester classes yet. The political issue that is being debated on is important, but not at the cost of our careers.”
Srinisha Reddy, a final year M.Sc student couldn’t agree more. “After my final year, I plan to take up research. The last semester needs about four months of classes and laboratory work. If we don’t get our degrees on time, our career goals will take a beating.”
B. Ashok, student of VNR College of Engineering says, “To study abroad, we need recommendation letters and graduation certificates. We’ll lose six months if we can’t apply for the current intake.”
Prof Sudharshan Rao, adds, “We don’t mind working overtime to conduct classes in the two weeks of preparatory holidays and summer vacations. But the agitating students should cooperate.”

Complaints to be treated as FIR
In the wake of the shocking revelation that the Haryana Police did not register an FIR in the Ruchika Girhotra molestation case for eight long years, the Union home ministry has decided to direct states to ensure that all complaints received by police stations are treated as FIRs.
In a related development, the government is contemplating a move wherein winners of police and gallantry medals can be stripped off their award if they are convicted by the courts in any case.
The home ministry has initiated a move to strip former Haryana DGP S.P.S. Rathore of the police medal awarded to him despite the molestation charges against him. He has been asked why he should not be stripped of his medal.
The former Haryana IPS officer, Mr R.K. Sharma, serving a life sentence in the Shivani Bhatnagar murder case still has a President’s police medal, a home official said.
It was in 1990 that Ruchika, then only 14, was molested by Rathore. The traumatised teenager committed suicide in 1993 following unabated harassment of her and her family by Rathore. Yet, the FIR in connection with the incident was registered only in 1999, six years after her death.
Ruchika’s family members have alleged that when they went to lodge a complaint against Rathore, then a senior police officer in Haryana, police initially refused to register an FIR. Besides, police refused to register a case when Ruchika’s brother was allegedly harassed by police on false charges. According to sources, the home ministry has now decided to issue a circular to state governments and UTs asking them to ensure that all complaints received at police stations are treated as FIRs. While there have been many complaints over the years by members of the public regarding the reluctance on the part of the police to register FIRs, the Ruchika case has finally spurred the home ministry into being pro-active on this front.
“The circular, to be issued next week, will direct state governments and Union Territories to ensure free and total registration of all complaints as FIRs”, said ministry sources.
The Centre is considering bringing about amendments in the Criminal Procedure Code and making it mandatory for the station house officer (SHO) who heads a police station to give reasons for registration as well as non-registration of a case after receiving a complaint. According to sources, the objective will be to ensure that even if a complaint is false, police won’t be able to escape responsibility where a probe is concerned once an FIR is registered.
The Centre is likely to take a decision on withdrawing medals if an officer is later found guilty in cases registered against them. The new policy is likely to be one that will lead to the automatic revocation of police and gallantry medals awarded to officers if they are convicted by a court. The rules are likely to be formalised when a high-powered awards committee headed by the home secretary, Mr G.K. Pillai meets here on January 4. Said a home ministry official, “Any IPS officer convicted by a court should be stripped of his medal. The awards committee will look into all relevant issues and take a decision,” the official added.

‘Liposuction’ For Sweta Basu’s Tummy
She is known as the giggly beauty of the Telugu circuit and so far, she has scored only hits with her films. However, she has now scored her first flop with the film ‘Kasko’ and along with that, she seems to have got some feedback as well. We are talking about Swetha Basu Prasad. Those who have watched ‘Kasko’ are now saying that Swetha is putting on weight in her tummy area and especially below her navel. Swetha was seen in a rather glamorous image in the film and gave a lot of oomph. She was seen in low waist jeans and didn’t let go of any opportunity to expose her navel.
For now, the audience is suggesting she must look at some sort of massage treatment or the regular liposuction kinds so that the flab on her tummy can be removed. If that happens, they feel Swetha will look even sexy and perhaps that can give her some plum offers. Let us hope she is reading this.

Stars celebrate X’mas holidays
With shooting schedules called off due to the TRS tension, filmstars are looking forward to making the most of their first Christmas holiday in years. We asked movie stars what their plans for X’mas are...
Sanjana, actor
It’s going to be a ‘wine and dine’ day for me. Christmas and New Year are two festivals I like to celebrate. However, every year I’m usually abroad filming at this time of the year. Thankfully, I’ll be home this year. I’m going to chill out with family and close friends today.
Rana D., actor
Christmas Eve is actually special to me as my dad’s birthday falls on December 24 and the entire family celebrates his birthday together. But with the lull in the industry and no shooting schedules in place, I will be spending time with my family even on Christmas this year.
Sharvanand, actor
Since I won’t be working this festive season, I’m going to stay at home with my family and spend time with them. I also have plans of calling my friends over to my place and chill out with them.
Bindu Madhavi, actor
It’s sad that work had to be cancelled because of the unrest in the city, but I’m looking forward to celebrating Christmas, as I’ve not managed to do this in a really long time. I’m going over to my friend’s place to catch up with my buddies and have a good time decorating the X’mas tree and binging on Christmas goodies.

Christmas, Festivals, Indian Festivals,
High on X’mas cheer
Just when Christmas was around the corner, the Andhra-Telangana tussle took a turn for the worse, sending all the Christmas shopping and party plans into a tizzy. But ask Hyderabadi Christians and they will unanimously agree that nothing can douse the spirit of the festival of joy and giving. From working their way around the prevailing tension to coming up with impromptu indoor plans, Hyderabadis are doing all it takes to have a merry Christmas.
Nathan Akshith, an engineer, whose last moment Christmas shopping plans went for a toss with the declaration of the 48-hour bandh, says, “Plans to go shopping and head out to the midnight mass had to be cancelled. But as far as festivities are concerned, nothing has changed. Leave alone this tussle, even a world war cannot dampen the Christmas spirit. The decorations are up, the goodies are made and we are going to have family and friends over for Christmas. There may be a bit of rescheduling, but nothing will be stalled.”
City youngsters who’ve returned home for the holidays say they won’t let the prevailing tension play spoilsport. “I’ve come from Coimbatore to celebrate Christmas with my family and I’m not going to let this unrest affect our yearly rituals. After all, Christmas comes only once a year,” says Emmanuel Kavoori, an engineering student, who spends Christmas visiting his relatives after the mass.
Michell Liu, a career cousellor, couldn’t agree more, “I never had elaborate plans for this Christmas, but the one plan that I had was to attend the midnight mass at St Johns Cathedral and I did not let the bandh scare or the unrest stop me. We did have to give up the midnight buffet, post the mass, but Christmas this year will be a family affair.”
There are others who prefer to look at the brighter side of things. Daniel Jaykumar, an engineer, says the bandh declaration has come as a boon.
“Every Christmas, we head out for a big family dinner to a restaurant. While we may not be able to do that this year, we have decided to have all my cousins over at my place for dinner. Elaborate plans are being made and an extensive menu is being decided upon. The only thing that was affected was our shopping plans. That said, it’s a great time to bond with family”

India beat Sri Lanka by 7 wickets, seal series
Gautam Gambhir notched up his seventh century while Virat Kohli struck his maiden to script India's series-clinching seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the fourth ODI on Thursday. Chasing 316 to win the tie and seal the series with one match to go, India found themselves in the morass at 23 for two before Gambhir (150 not out) starred in an 224-run stand with Virat Kohli (107) to inject fresh life into the chase and then completed the formality in Dinesh Karthik's (19 not out) company.
The wobbly start notwithstanding, it was a clinical chase by the Indians who cruised to 317 for three in 48.1 overs to go 3-1 up in the five-match series.
Gambhir, who became the newest member of the 3000-run club, faced 137 balls in his controlled innings, hitting 14 fours in the process.
Kohli's mature 114-ball knock was studded with 11 fours and a six.

Hrithik gets sewage water to drink
Hrithik Roshan gets this water. As do hundreds of residents in one of the city’s most posh suburbs.Every day, for over a month now, residents of Juhu’s 12th and 13th Road have been waking up to severely contaminated water flowing from their taps.
Supplied by BMC as drinking water, it is the colour of coal tar, with visible suspended particles, and smells of faeces. And it flows from taps meant for supplying clean, potable water.
This has forced Roshan’s wife Sussanne, a mother of two, to use the family’s good offices to bring the BMC to book. “It is a very bad situation. We are getting drinking water which is mixed with sewage water,” she told Mumbai Mirror.
The Roshans who live at Palazzio building on Juhu 12th Road sent Ashok Vasodia, their secretary to BMC K/West Ward office on Wednesday afternoon to lodge a complaint. Their concerns are shared by the other residents who live under the threat of an epidemic breakout.
Vigilant resident Kishore Gupta remarked, “We have a TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) meter at our house and the reading of the BMC water ranges from 135 to 200, while a packaged drinking water has a TDS of around 70. BMC water should normally have around 75. This shows the extent of contamination!”
“We are receiving dark, brackish water, which smells of faeces and can be used only to flush toilets. We are forced to use packaged water,” complained Sunila Lalwani, a resident of Jasmet on 12th Road, opposite Roshan’s Palazzio. She also added that her 11-year-old son Sachin who must have somehow ingested this contaminated water, had to miss his second semester examination after falling ill.
Rekha Teckani, who runs a playgroup for children in the neighbourhood, says, “If we take a bath with this water we start stinking. The question of using this water for drinking and cooking does not even arise!” Teckani buys packaged drinking water for her playgroup kids.
According to Dr Anant Narde, resident of Girnar building on 13th Road, the problem of contaminated water was aggravated after BMC contractors, appointed for re-laying 13th Road, damaged the existing water pipelines in September this year. “We have been receiving this contaminated water for over a month now and live in constant fear of our children taking ill. Officials from the BMC’s Hydraulic Engineering department assured us they will provide us free potable water. But we will have to bring tankers and it is not possible for us to go scouting for tankers in the morning. The neighbourhood has no option but to call for private water tankers.”
Some residents have even threatened that if the problem is not solved in a couple of days they will fill bottles with the contaminated water and present it to councillor Adolf D’Souza and all BMC officials from the K/West Ward as a Christmas gift.
Local councillor Adolf D’Souza blamed the contractors who damaged the pipelines while working on the road. “After receiving complaints from the residents we inspected the site along with officials of the Hydraulic Engineering department and discovered that the existing pipeline has been damaged at various places, allowing sewage water to seep through the water pipeline throughout the stretch. We have already laid new water pipeline on 13th Road and it was to be connected by March next year. But given the gravity of the situation I have asked officials to connect these new pipes to the main water line near Juhu Church and supply clean water from that pipeline.”
A senior official from Hydraulic department voiced, “We are tired of the sewerage department as their contractors have been merrily damaging water pipelines all around Juhu and neighbouring areas and we have to face the ire of locals. We are repairing the lines and laying down a new pipeline to solve the water woes completely but this will take around a week’s time.”
Juhu residents have been facing the problem of contaminated water for nearly 10 years. And laying down new pipelines may not be the answer. As Sunila Lalwani pointed out, “A new pipe line compounded the problem as it cut down the water flow drastically. We were receiving only one hour of water supply everyday. So laying down a new line without rectifying the water pressure problem is foolish.”
Supplied by BMC as drinking water, it is the colour of coal tar, with visible suspended particles, and smells of faeces. And it flows from taps meant for supplying clean, potable water.

Students beat Nagam with chappals, hound out TDP leaders
Agitated students of Osmania University attacked and hounded out Telugu Desam Party leaders from Telangana, in protest against the party’s volte face on Telangana issue, that led to the Central government change its stand.
Senior TDP leaders Nagam Janardhan Reddy, Kadiam Srihari, E Dayakar Rao and others went to Osmania University to express their solidarity with the striking students, who were hurt in the police lathicharge on them. On seeing the TDP leaders, the students got agitated further and gheraoed them, demanding that they all come out of the TDP to express their support for Telangana. The students attacked 20 cars of the TDP leaders and their followers, damaged them with stones and turned them upside down.
While the students spared Srihari and Dayakar Rao, they targeted sturdy Nagam Janardhan Reddy, who they alleged, was acting like a stooge of TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu. They beat him with chappals and as he started leaving the place, they chased him. Being a hefty personality, Nagam could not run further and fell down on the road. As he lost consciousness, he was taken to Kamineni Hospital on a motor bike. Others had left the place with a lot of insult.
TDP leaders Mothkupalli Narsimhulu and Devender Goud condemned the attack on the TDP leaders, stating that it was the handiwork of some anti-social elements and not the genuine students.

Telangana bandh: TRS supporters, students get violent on the streets
Normal life was paralysed across Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh as the 48-hour bandh called by TRS and other parties to protest the Centre's decision to hold further consultations on the statehood issue began with violence breaking out at some places.
The shutdown call had an immediate impact as students and other Telangana supporters came on to the streets and resorted to stone pelting on buses and shops in Hyderabad and other Telangana districts.
Violence broke out in Hyderabad, Warangal and other places in the region within hours of the Centre's announcement as police resorted to baton-charge to disperse angry crowds of protesters.
In the state capital, several petrol pumps were shutdown soon after TRS President K Chandrasekhar Rao and other Telangana leaders gave the bandh call. Long queues were witnessed at the few petrol stations that remained open.
Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) suspended services in the city and other Telangana districts. A large number of commuters were stranded in Hyderabad as the city buses run by APSRTC remained off the roads.
Incidents of buses and other vehicles being burnt were reported from several places in the city since late last night after the shutdown began.
Centre on Wednesday night said there was a need to hold wide ranging consultations on the Telangana issue with all political parties and groups in the state.

Fidelity not essential for a relationship: Angelina Jolie

The Mirror reports, in an interview, Angelina, 34, says: “Neither Brad nor I have ever claimed that living together means to be chained together. We make sure that we never restrict each other. I doubt that fidelity is absolutely essential for a relationship. It’s worse to leave your partner and talk badly about him afterwards.”
The stunner and partner Brad Pitt have 6 six kids – Maddox, eight, Pax, six, Zahara, four, Shiloh, three, and twins Knox and Vivienne, one.
