Rajiv Gandhi assassination video suppressed, claims book

The chief investigating officer of the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, K Ragothaman, has alleged that the then IB chief, M K Narayanan, had "suppressed a vital piece of evidence": a video tape showing "human bomb" Dhanu at the Sriperumbudur venue prior to the former prime minister's arrival. In a book authored by him, Ragothaman said that although a "preliminary enquiry" had been conducted in connection with the missing video, Narayanan, who is now West Bengal governor, had been "allowed to go scot-free" by the chief of the special investigation team (SIT), D R Karthikeyan. The just-published book, "Conspiracy to kill Rajiv Gandhi - From CBI files", claims that the tape, which had been taken from the videographer by IB the day after Rajiv Gandhi had been blown by Dhanu on May 21, 1991, was never shared with SIT in the investigation of the assassination. Ragothaman wrote, "The assassin gang as per our investigation was very much in the sterile zone for more than two and half hours waiting for its target." The suppression of the video evidence helped the Tamil Nadu police get away with the claim that Dhanu had sneaked into the sterile zone after Rajiv Gandhi's arrival at the venue around 10 pm. The tape recovered by the Tamil Nadu police was found to have interpolations in the form of Doordarshan's news bulletins about the assassination. Ragothaman therefore asserted that the tape taken by the IB officials was "the original one and that the video given to the local police was a substituted one". The alleged manipulation, according to Ragothaman, was meant to erase video evidence of the kind of people Dhanu had interacted with at the venue, thereby sparing embarrassment to the Congress party in the middle of the 1991 Lok Sabha election. He asked: would Narayanan have dared "to damage the goal of the Congress party, irrespective of his personal affiliation to Rajiv Gandhi's family?" Though he was formally in charge of the investigation and was therefore in the witness box for 67 days, Ragothaman wrote that he had not been taken into confidence by his superior Karthikeyan about the recovery of the tape by IB. He came to know about it later through the report of the Justice J S Verma Commission which had probed the security lapses leading to the assassination. Besides recording "this unusual feature" of the SIT-produced tape containing news bulletins along with visuals of the venue, the commission's report reproduced a letter written by Narayanan on May 22, 1991 to the then Prime Minister, Chandrashekhar, stating that the video of the meeting was being "scanned to try and IDENTIFY THE LADY". The lady referred to in capital letters by Narayanan was of course the assassin. In a sequel to the commission's report, the Narasimha Rao government directed SIT to hold the preliminary enquiry, case no. 1 of 1995, against Narayanan along with the then cabinet secretary and home secretary, according to the book. The case was later "buried at the behest of the chief of SIT" despite the admission made by Narayanan in his May 22 letter. While the public got to see only the two still pictures of Dhanu taken by an LTTE-hired photographer who had died in the blast, Ragothaman's book raises questions about the whereabouts of the video in which Narayanan admitted to have seen the assassin. Why did the SIT chief not collect the video seen by the IB chief? Or, why did the IB chief not share the tape in which Dhanu was visible with him? Had there been such questions about anybody else, the book says "he would have been booked under Section 201 IPC for concealing the evidence and screening the offender".

Storm Sandy makes landfall: Ten dead, Manhattan flooded, New York plunges into darkness

A record storm surge from super-storm Sandy sent floodwaters pouring into Lower Manhattan on Monday night as parts of New York City were plunged into darkness by widespread power outages. The East River and the Hudson River flooded subway and car tunnels, and several feet of seawater swamped into Battery Park at the foot of Lower Manhattan, with waters rising and rain showing no sign of abating. "Lower Manhattan is being covered by seawater. I am not exaggerating. Sea water is rushing into the Battery Tunnel," said Howard Glaser, director of operations for the New York state government. The Battery Tunnel is a road tunnel linking the south end of Manhattan, New York's financial center, to Long Island under the East River. Cars could be seen afloat in several Manhattan streets, and the facade of a six-story building collapsed. At least one New Yorker was killed when a tree fell on his house, and there were reports of several more casualties. Local broadcaster WNBC said some houses on Staten Island were "flooded up to their attics" while the New York police department sought boats to conduct rescue missions there and on Brooklyn's Coney Island. US airlines cancel flights, hotels book up before hurricane

Hurricane Sandy will likely cause financial headaches for US airlines that canceled more than 7,000 flights to and from the Northeast corridor on Sunday. Hotels in the region were busy handling cancellations for guests who could not get to destinations in the Northeast, extending stays for guests who could not leave town, and booking rooms for people who left their homes. Airlines started cancelling flights in the US northeast region on Sunday evening as cities from Washington DC to Boston braced for floods and high winds from the hurricane, which was expected to make landfall in the next few days. According to Flightaware.com, more than 7,100 flights had been canceled by 9 p.m. on Sunday due to Sandy Airlines waived fees for people who have to change travel plans because of the grounded flights. In New York City, the timing of flight cancellations like US Airways, was determined by the city's decision to start shutting down its mass transit systems at 7 p.m. as passengers would have no way to get to and from the airport. U.S. Airways said it would likely have to cancel close to 2,000 flights because of the storm, starting at 7pm on Sunday. The airline said it expects to resume flights on Tuesday, but noted that flooding and the storm's duration could cause additional delays. The airline also said it would move planes from the hurricane zone to try to avoid damage. Repositioning those planes after the weather clears could cause additional delays. Transportation consultant George Hamlin estimated that Sandy could cost the industry hundreds of millions of dollars. "It's a disruption in terms of extra costs," Hamlin said. On top of lost flight revenue, airlines will likely have to pay their crew extra if they are stranded away from their home base. "If you cancel a day or two's flights, it may take some people days to get to where they want to go," he said. American Airlines said it would stop its Northeast flights at 9pm on Sunday night. This involved 140 cancellations on Sunday and pre-cancellation of another 1,431 flights from Monday to Wednesday. JetBlue Airways Corp said it canceled more than a 1,000 flights through Wednesday morning. Delta Airlines Inc said it canceled 180 flights Sunday and that it expects canceled flights Monday to be in the hundreds. Reuters was not able to obtain estimates for flight cancellations for United Continental Holdings Inc. Meanwhile the reservation desks at Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc, which operates hotels such as Westin, Sheraton and Marriott International Inc hotel groups said they had a busy day. "I've had a lot of calls about New York properties today, a lot of people who are cancelling, a lot of people who come here because we have generators," a Starwood reservations employee said. "People are really just frightened of the storm ... they're frightened of water levels and they're frightened of losing power and they want to be somewhere where they're safe," the employee said. A reservations worker for Marriott said her work day had been "really crazy" with all the calls for cancellations and last-minute reservations, including calls from corporations booking blocks of rooms for their employees. Corporate spokespeople for Starwood and Marriott were not immediately available for comment Sunday.

According to reports, the film got dubbed into Telugu and has been released with the same title. This is not suitable for Telugu nativity and many in the B, C centers are unable to connect with the title. Though Athiloka Sundari Sridevi is there in the film and this is her comeback, it is not working out. Some are suggesting that the film should have been titled something like 'Sridevi English Paathaalu' and that would have created some interest. But right now, though the film is good and got good response from the audience it seems to have lost out on the inner markets.

The business was far from upbeat today [Friday]. The two new releases, ENGLISH VINGLISH and KLPD - KISMET LOVE PAISA DILLI, had a tepid start at the ticket window. While ENGLISH VINGLISH gained lead at multiplexes, KLPD - KISMET LOVE PAISA DILLI was slightly better at some single screens. However, the opening numbers were below par. ENGLISH VINGLISH picked up marginally during the evening shows and is expected to gain momentum over the weekend, since the word of mouth is very good. The Saturday and Sunday biz would decide where the two films are headed.

Does 'Amir Khan's Talaash' have traces of Aarushi murder case?

Real-life crime cases have always inspired filmmakers and it seems Aamir Khan is bitten by the same bug too. The story of his upcoming film Talaash revolves around a murder and reportedly it bears resemblance to much-publicised Aarushi murder case. Director Reema Kagti and producer Aamir, who also plays the lead in the film, have reportedly studied the way police in Delhi's suburb Noida handled the Aarushi murder case and then how CBI went on to re-investigate it. Aarushi, 14, was found murdered at her parents' Noida residence May 16, 2008. The body of her domestic help Hemraj was found the next day on the terrace of the house. Her parents are accused of murdering both their daughter and the domestic help, and destroying evidence. If sources are to be believed, the makers of the film had asked for newspaper reports on the challenging case, which continues to puzzle them. They reportedly wanted to know why was Aarushi's case transferred to the CBI and what were the shortfalls in the police investigations. However, when contacted, the film's spokesperson refused to comment on it. The film, co-produced by Farhan Akhtar and Aamir, also features Rani Mukerji and Kareena Kapoor. It releases Nov 30. One of the biggest hits of last year THE DIRTY PICTURE could not get buyers for some time after it was completed and Milan Luthria was contemplating to let the film lie in the cans. But when the film was released it stormed the box-office and riding on its success Vidya Balan could ensure that KAHAANI had indeed been a success at the box-office as well. The dynamics of Hindi cinema in present times, with reference to the collections at the bo- office is concerned, is mainly decided through the collection of first three days. For Sridevi the fortunate part is that she has the backing of the banner of R. Balakrishnan aka Balki so the film has been released without much ado, and it was also coupled with the fact that the ENGLISH VINGLISH has made its mark internationally, so a buzz has been created around the movie. But the moot point to watch would be whether it gets translated into footfalls at the box-office. After all, the film has been constructed from the perspective of a mother of a previous generation, who owing to her educational background has not been accepted in her family, and even by her daughter. It indeed is a stark reality of the present times that even daughters for the sake of being "proper" in the society are ready to wage a war of existence with their mothers, and it is more an effect of the social media and the social relationships that are being fostered through the social networking websites. From that perspective ENGLISH VINGLISH shows a mirror to all and sundry who try to live in a surreal world, akin to the Spanish prisons where the lights danced but the time was not discernible, in the same way the present generation is aware about the relationships nomenclature, but the sweetness of these relationships is not a priority to be explored. For the sake of Sridevi and relationships that are the hallmark of our society one hopes that ENGLISH VINGLISH is able to make its mark at the box office.

Telugu FIlm 'Shiva Tandavam' Review: Lacks Lustre

Vikram who had a good series of hits in Tollywood has not been able to deliver in the recent past. This time he has come up with yet another venture. Whether he is successful or not, let us see Story Blind many Kenny (Vikram) keeps doing a series of murders in London. The police would be investigating to locate the killer. Why is Kenny doing these murders? What is his past? Well, Kenny’s real name is Shiva Kumar and he is an IPS officer. Kenny’s wife Meenakshi (Anushka) dies in a terrorist attack. And Shiva loses his vision. With that he decides to take revenge on the wrongdoers. He is helped by his friend Arjun (Jagapathi Babu). Whether he is successful or not forms the rest of the story. Performances Vikram has done much better challenging roles than this before. So this is nothing. But the way he owns the character is commendable. Though it is not to his full potential he did full justice to the role. Anushka didn’t have much to offer but wherever she was, she made her presence felt with her beauty. Performance wise she didn’t have much to do. Jagapathi Babu has done a very critical role in this one. He looks handsome and has justified his presence to the fullest. Performance-wise he did his bit as required. Sarah Jackson gave an effective performance. She is pretty and has a cute smile. With the London backdrop, she felt more at home and gave her best. Lakshmi Rai was sexy as usual, Santhanam brought few smiles, Nasser was natural, Sayaji Shinde was standard. Others didn’t have much to do. Highlights Vikram Production values Drawbacks Story Screenplay Direction Analysis Compared to many Tamil films, this is technically a well made product. The highlight is the cinematography. It is not sure why Telugu films shot in foreign countries don’t have that kind of standard but Tamil moviemakers don’t compromise on the quality at all. Background score is good but songs are weak. There are no catchy tunes. The director has taken the movie very well but he didn’t do the basic work in story and screenplay. He wrapped the film with a vague idea. The film looks like a rehashed version of ‘Ghajini’. The difference is, ‘Ghajini’ had a man with short term memory loss and this has a blind man. That ran like a race horse and this ran like a blind horse. The storyline might have excited the director and Vikram but the conviction part of how the blind man will take revenge was neglected. The comedy factor was pretty stale and the attempts to make the audience laugh fizzled out. There is no logic in the movie and the irony is, the hero is an intelligence officer but no intelligence is seen in the way the whole thing has been conceived. Instead of watching the film, it is better to blindfold your eyes and move about in the theatres, that will be more exciting and entertaining. First half is weak and makes you feel drowsy. Second half is okay but still weak. Except for Vikram’s performance there is nothing else in this film.

The last few days have been abuzz with the news of former Sun TV CEO Hansraj Saxena who lunched a production house 'Sax Pictures' is planning to rope in Rajinikanth and Ram Charan for a Mega project.

During the audio launch of Tamil film Sundaattam Today, Saxena confirmed the reports that he approached Superstar for this multi-starrer project which will directed by ace filmmaker KV Anand (Rangam, Brothers fame). Opinion: Attack on Jagan to the Hilt

Is the justice fair and equal for everyone in our country? Can people in power (Sonia/CBI), the influential yellow media (Eenadu/Andhra Jyothy/TV9), combined with an opposition leader (Chandrababu) that is more interested in coming back to power than addressing peoples’ problems go after one individual (Jagan) and subject him to all sorts of legal troubles, just because they cannot face him democratically? That they cannot face him in elections had been proved thrice already – Kadapa bi-elections, Kovvur bi-election, and the bi-elections to 18 Assembly and Nellore Parliament seat, where YSRCP won more votes than all the other political parties contested! Is festering Jagan with cases that cannot be proved in courts but make it harder for him to get bail the only way these three modern day untouchables - Congress (losing one MP seat a day and surely going down to less than 100 in 2014), Yellow Media (losing readers everyday), and Chandrababu (no hope of winning over masses - ever) can face Jagan? How else can anyone explain the multiple CBI charge-sheets, some sensational or other news or requests just before the court hears Jagan’s bail petition, and some yellow media/TDP accusations of Jagan influencing CBI or courts? They are all designed to put pressure on the courts not to grant bail, so they can have him behind the bars for a long time. The main argument of the government (CBI) has been that Jagan will influence the witnesses, yet they cannot show one iota of evidence to this effect. The open collusion of Sonia, TDP, CBI and yellow media has been evident to anyone with a head on their shoulders, but this would not deter them for going after Jagan is really shameless! Yellow Media prediction for the past few weeks that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) would attach the properties of Jagan has come to reality. One thing we all have to accept is that yellow media has been right on dot for the past couple of years, and they should be thankful to Congress party and CBI. CBI JD Laxminarayana call list contained several hundred unethical calls to the yellow media, in spite of his busiest schedule. Instead of CBI pulling up its Joint Director for making these unethical calls, it actually went after the people that got his call list out! The CPI, CPM, Loksatta that cried foul when Margadarsi was served notices by YSR government saying that it was an attack on freedom of press, don’t even say a word on attack on Sakshi and Jagan is testament to their real intentions then and now! These powers are trying to crush YS Jagan politically and tarnish the legend of YSR. The investigative agencies like CBI, ED, in collusion with the judiciary have become part and parcel of the whole episode. This has, in essence pushed the democracy off the cliff. We have to understand that we have reached a point of no return. The democratic values got so devalued in the state in the past couple of years that both Congress party and TDP have colluded shamelessly in destroying the credibility of the independent agencies and the honor of the judiciary. What used to be foul plays in the background previously have now become shamelessly open! How else can we explain Jagan, who never was part of any government gets arrested by CBI in misuse of power and kept in jail without bail, while Chandra Babu, who was wielding power while presiding over many, many scandals would get scot free? The courageous tiger is caged and the wily cat is doing its stage managed walk in the direction of the movie directors! Where are they (Congress/TDP) taking our democracy to? A two page letter by a self proclaimed mad dog (Sankar Rao) at the behest of Sonia (he admitted categorically) prompted a judge Kakru to order full blown CBI investigation. Sankar Rao was awarded a ministry and Kakru a cabinet rank HRC Chairmanship. A two thousand page petition, with pin point proofs by Vijayamma was tossed away by judge Rohini, who was appointed to High Court by Chandra Babu. Sonia is fine with all this as Chandrababu colluded with her. Is this natural justice? None would concur. Sonia flouted the democratic values all her life. While Priyanka Chopra's flying high post the success of Barfi!, she asserts that her de-glam avatar in the film hasn't alienated her fan base. The actor says, "Not wearing makeup doesn't make one any less an actor. At the same time, you can be a very good actor with complete makeup on, for example my role in Fashion, which won me the National Award." Releasing close on the heels of Barfi! was Heroine, and we can't help but wonder what Priyanka means, when she tells us, "I don't just want to be a heroine, I want to be a female actor." She adds, "The difference in the latter comes through when one is known as an actor who is able to carry off any role. I don't know what the norm is; I don't know what kind of films I should be doing or what I am supposed to be doing. I don't know what is right or whether I should be saying 'Oh yes, I am working with all five Khans'." Up next, PC, who will be seen in Zanjeer alongside Ram Charan Tej, informs us that she will be doing a special number in the film. "Zanjeer is my film, so I don't know whether it is an item number technically, but it will be an item," she says. It's precisely what the singer did during her recent trip to Ahmedabad as she began her conversation, "With me looking like the way I do and the kind of voice I have, no one thought I would reach anywhere." Today Usha is a name synonymous to a distinct persona and a style of singing that only she can carry. A live wire on stage and an absolute fun to talk to in person, Usha was at her humorous best when TOI caught up with her. Today she not only has a National Award to her name, but popular film awards too, which might have come to her a little too late but she seems unfazed about it. Says the singer, "I never saw awards as the prime motive of singing. I always wanted to connect with the audience and have fun. Music has never been business for me, neither has it been a prime career option, I only wanted to enjoy myself." She adds, "That doesn't mean awards don't matter. They mean a lot to everyone and even to me. I was thrilled when I got the Filmfare Award last year. All of us are looking for recognition and when it comes your way, it feels amazing. But there is nothing more important than your audience's love." For someone who has been in the industry for more than three decades, Usha has sung only a handful of songs and has still managed to garner this kind of love from listeners. She shares, "I am the only non-playback singer who has managed to survive in the entertainment business for so long. Back then people only knew the hero or heroine's face, but no one knew what the singer looked like. I brought a face to the singers." She adds, "I never understood the fuss about one playback singer not singing other singer's songs. I think this only happens with Bollywood playback singers. No other musicians from other regional music/non film music industry have such huge ego problems. I always sang what I liked. I only believed in singing and being happy. That has kept me alive in the industry." Usha, who has always believed in originality and gives every song her own distinct touch, feels, though the reality shows are a great platform, they are only producing replicas. She says, "I am thrilled about music reality shows. There are so many new singers coming up through them. But somewhere the concept is going wrong. These shows are not promoting originality. We have to instill in the youngsters that playback singing is not the ultimate goal. There is a huge world beyond playback singing. They should explore that." Just as she prepares to leave, she adds, "I have been coming to Gujarat for a very long time now. But today I had one of the most sumptuous meals I've had in life. I have always enjoyed coming here and have received lots of love. Gujaratis are one of the most progressive people in India and this is one amazing place I always look forward to coming."

After the debacle of 'Endukante Premanta', Ram focused on one film at a time and signed a movie with Bommarillu Bhaskar. After shooting for a while, lead girl Shuba Phutela walked out of this flick 'Ongole Gitta' and movie went into budget issues as they roped another girl. Now, the second girl is also out and beautiful yet flop record holder, Kriti Kharbanda is paired with Ram as a lead girl. For a girl like Kriti, who has no single hit among Boni, Teenmaar and Mr.Nookayya, this is like bread falling in ghee.

Currently, our Bangalore model Kriti is having a couple of films in Kannada circuit, but nothing here. Let us see if she breaks the jinx of flops and delivers a hit for Ram or not!

Bollywood has been reaching new dimensions when it comes to box office collections and the latest fad which has picked up is the 100 crores club. Some of the recent best movies have crossed Rs 100 crores collection mark effortlessly and all of them have been the commercial masala entertainers.

But one film has crossed the 100 crore club in its own style and it is nowhere near to a masala potboiler. We are talking about the film ‘Barfi’ and it is heard that within 19 days, it reached a mark of Rs 100 crores gross and that too in India. Many say the Oscar talk brought ‘Barfi’ to the 100 crores club.

Apparently, ‘Barfi’ has got the Oscar nomination and that raised the curiosity and interest level of the audience in a big way. Even south Indian audience also went to watch the film and the response was very good. This goes to show that if there is a quality content cinema then it can compete with the commercial potboilers.

'Rambabu' Takes A Dig At Chiru?

Fresh with the success of his recent film Gabbar Singh, actor Pawan Kalyan is all set to raise a lot of heat and dust in the Telugu film industry once again with his forthcoming flick - Cameraman Ganga Tho Rambabu.
According to the talk going on in film industry circles, there are number of satirical dialogues and also scenes in this film, particularly aimed at taking a dig at Pawan Kalyan's megastar brother Chiranjeevi.
One of such dialogues -- "Okka Maatapai Undaaali, Evariki Thala Vancha Koodadu" (A person should stand on one word and does not bow to anybody) is said to be targeted at Chiranjeevi. At the same time, there are also dialogues such as -- "Unchukodaniki Media Umpudu Kathe Kaadu" (Media is not a prostitute to keep), which are indirectly aimed at attacking political leaders. Besides, there are a lot of scenes that expose the present day politicians.
Everybody knows Pawan Kalyan has some "thikka" (madness) but it has some "lekka" (reasoning). Ever since Chiranjeevi proved a failure in politics and merged his Praja Rajyam Party with the Congress, Pawan Kalyan has not been in good terms with his brother. And he is using every opportunity to take a dig at his brother, say industry sources.

Ranbir's Barfi! Hits 100 Crore in India!

Ranbir aka Murphy aka Barfi certainly has a reason to smile! His film Barfi!, which also stars Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D’Cruz certainly is making its mark! We reported earlier that Barfi! had netted 100 crore at the box office with both India and overseas bering counted, which was quite impressive. Now in India alone it has earned 100crore, which is amazing for a film that is a bit off the beaten track. With its unique heartwarming storyline, fabulous music and gorgeous cinematography Barfi! has been appreciated by audiences, critics and industry insiders and recently was selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars in the foreign language film category this year. “Ranbir Kapoor joins the much-famed Rs100 crore club on Tuesday with Barfi! and this is Priyanka Chopra’s second ton this year, after Agneepath,” tweeted trade analyst Taran Adarsh. The other Bollywood movies that grossed Rs.100 crore this year are – Housefull 2, Rowdy Rathore, Bol Bachchan and Ek Tha Tiger. The film, which minted Rs34.6 crore during its opening weekend and brought in a total of Rs58.6 crore over the first week, is still going strong at the ticket window. “Barfi! (3rd Week) Monday Rs2.5 crore. Grand total Rs98.8 crore net. Crosses Rs100 crore mark in India today. Bravo,” posted Adarsh on his Twitter page. “The film is Ranbir Kapoor’s biggest hit in overseas… total after 3rd Weekend UK 622,039 pounds (Rs5.30 cr) … USA $2,462,008 (Rs12.89 cr),” he further tweeted. Barfi! has been produced by UTV Motion Pictures and after Rowdy Rathore, this is the production house’s second film to achieve the feat. Gaurav Verma, Director – India Theatrical Distribution, Studios, Disney UTV, told IANS: “Barfi! has had a dream run at the box office and continues to do extremely well at cinemas. With a huge demand among exhibitors, we are hoping to add over 200 cinemas this week.” Interestingly, the director of the film had earlier stated that it was more important for him to touch a hundred hearts than Rs100 crore box-office takings. “I don’t know about making Rs100 crore. But I feel it is more difficult to touch people’s heart. From my film, I only want to touch hundreds or thousands of hearts and that’s all that matters to me. Collection is not important for me,” said Basu.

Kareena's Heroine Crashes in its 2nd Week at the Box Office

Heroine made a poor 0.70 Crores on it’s 2nd Monday and 0.90 Crores on Tuesday. Tuesday being a holiday on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti saw a spike in the box office collections of Barfi! and OMG Oh My God. However, Heroine couldn’t benefit in any way from the national holiday. The Kareena Kapoor starrer now stands at a domestic box office collection of 41.70 Crores. Thankfully for the film, it has also made about 9.50 Crores at the overseas box office which brings up its worldwide box office total to 51.20 Crores.
